great looking cruiser!! you have done a lot to it, many of which I wish to perform one day to mine. Keep up the good work and keep taking great pictures!!!

Installed a Snorkel last week. Making the first hole with the 3-1/2" Hole saw was definitely the moment of truth and hoping the template was correct. Amazingly, even though I kept wanting to move the template down, thinking it was too high, it was right on!

Snorkel looks great.

Just read through the whole thread. Very impressive! I purchased my 92 a couple months ago and I appreciate and share your attention to detail.

A couple questions.... You've had your KM2's almost 2 years now. How many miles have you put on them in 22 months and how are they holding up? I just purchased the same tire for mine.

Also, after reading the entire thread, it seems like your truck runs about as good as a 3FE is ever going to run. What are you seeing in fuel consumption? The next project on mine is a deep tuneup but it runs just ok now. I am getting about 10.5 mpg and am just wondering if there is any room for improvement.

Thanks

That kickdown cable is not as easy as it looks. You have to drop the Tranny Valve body to get at it....

I was able to replace my kickdown cable without having to mess with the valve body.

If I recall correctly it only took a little patience with the needle nose pliers to get the end connected to the lever inside the trans pan.

Copenhagen,

Thanks for the comments and congrats on getting a '92 as well! As far as tire wear, I put a little over 20,000 on them so far, City driving and a lot of Freeway and County Hwys. They are holding up wonderful, thread doesn't seem to wear much, the lugs are still nice and thick.

Tire noise isn't bad either, just a nice woosh woosh woosh to let people know your coming. I found these tires are good in the winter as well, and no too bad on ice, considering it is a large heavy truck. I will say, I have 27" Maxxis Bighorns on my Subaru with about the same mileage, and they tread is really becoming worn (Evenly, but worn) There is maybe 1/2" on the lugs now days compared to when I got them, there was a good 3/4".

As for MPG and running, I think it does run about as good as it ever will, its smooth and once warmed up, it idles really quiet (Except for the typical Tick of the Rockers) Which is one thing I'm not sure about, I have adjusted the Lash twice now, and the second time I was able to get the motor noticeably less noisy. I also adjusted the valves cold the second time around, which to me, seems better.

I'm just curious as to how much noise is normal for the 3F-E?

Anyway, as for my MPG, granted the Odometer is a little off because of the larger tires, I'm figuring, I'm getting about 12/13mph on the highway, its not horrible on gas. I do run 93oct for the fact, it pings like a MF if I don't. It still pings slightly with the 93oct, If I run some of the Octane Booster, it goes away until the next fill up.

Also, for whatever reason, my Disty is turned full retarded. If I advance it ever so slightly, the pinging is insane. I'm not sure if someone removed the disty and put it back in a tooth off or not, I can't figure out why else it would be fully retarded, and I have yet to really bother with the timing for the simple fact its a PITA to see the timing window. Lol.

All in all, I'm happy with the motor and truck. There is also some driveline play, when going from Drive to Reverse, or when it upshifts while slowing to a stop. I heard the Transfer-Case is the culprit of this?? If so, is this something to be concerned about?

Pinging? I have pinging on my 91 FJ80 also and I think it is caused by my engine running ever so slightly hot, I'm still trying to figure it out though. My coolant temp at the top of the radiator is 197 F when running somewhat hard.

Try running "Water Wetter" in your coolant, it does make it run about 20deg F. cooler.

There will be slight valve train noise but not clattery.
Don't mistake injector noise for a ticking valve. You will hear the injector solenoids working and is normal.

Search "clunk", "driveline clunk" and you will get a bunch of info on that.
They all clunk to some degree. Being a full time 4x4 there are a lot of components in the system.
Things that will make it worse but is not limited to.
Worn front axle drive flanges.
Bad U-joints.
Worn drive shaft slip joint.

My 3F-E is a clattery when first started, and stays like that until it warms up a bit, but does quiet up pretty good once warm and taken for a nice drive. But there is always a consistent tick when lightly on the throttle (Driving thru town) I'm sure I just have warn pushrods and/or rockers since I doubt anyone ever took care of the motor before me.

As for Injector noise, I'm used to that with 80s SPFI Subarus.

Thanks for the info, I'll do a little searching on the subject.

So last night while driving to work was interesting. About half way there (3 miles drive time) my truck starts to run a little rough (Can feel small vibration in steering wheel at idle) I start getting up to speed after a stop light and it starts bogging (Almost like no throttle response) and then it picks up again. I make a turn onto the road I work at, do about 25mph and the RPMs start to drop down to 1000rpm and lower, feathering the throttle (Even putting it to the floor) and I get no response and it stalls.

I pop it in neutral, and it fires right up, but the RPMs climb to 1200rpm and stays there, then slowly lowers to normal idle speed. I park it and let it run, it runs fine, even revving it, the throttle response it right there like normal, then starts acting up again.

So then I take it for a little ride around the commercial park, running and driving normal, come to a spot and it starts idling really low and wanting to stall, so I give it half throttle trying to get up to 45mph. I don't want to say that it "Bucks" but I get boosts of power and couldn't get it up to 35mph (Didn't shift into 2nd until slowly climbing to 3000rpm) and then whole routine continues.

Park it, come out of work 4hrs later, it it just cranks, but does not fire. I do have spark as I checked the coil wire, and my CEL does come on with ignition turned to ON as normal. I pulled the truck home, get it home and it fires right up and runs great (So I didn't have to push it into the drive way Ha!)

What could be causing this? I'm thinking a failing Throttle Position Sensor? Any ideas?

I'm pressed for time and really need to figure this out. I am going to jump the Diagnostic plug and see if there are any codes since it stalled and or didn't fire while cranking.

If anyone has some insight on this, please post it :)

Thanks to everyone!

So after jumping TE1 and E1 together after the engine was at running temp (But not running) I got codes 24 and 31 off the CEL.

Haynes (Yes I said it!) shows code 24 being related to the Intake Air Temp sensor. And Code 31 is related to the Airflow Sensor.

But from what I understand, if the MAF is failing, it'll cut the CEL and Injectors.

I will also mention, I have a moderate Humm and Vibration coming from the 2nd row floor. My guess is the Fuel pump, I'm wonder if this is at all related. Failing fuel pump cutting fuel at random? The humming start about a week ago.

Good news! Swapped in a newer used Fuel pump thanks to Alex79, and the 80 runs great again! Just in time for the snow tonight

FINALLY! PROBLEM SOLVED.

I swapped in a new CSI from Cruiserparts.net today, and Bam! The truck runs perfectly again. Apparently my gut feeling was accurate and a little reassurance from the board very much helped.

This is what the original Injector looked like.

So after the fuel pump replacement it was still acting up? Hence the CSI replacement. How did you troubleshoot the CSI?

Tom!
I totally forgot you had this thread over here. I poured over your build thread on USMB last month after I picked up my '91 80, I still have my Loyale but I think it will be with a "new family" soon.
Your 80 is still looking good, is that snorkel the amazon one? it doesn't fit/look half bad, I might need to pick one up as well.
Hope all is well with you.

Sorry for the lack of info, after I swapped in the fuel pump, it ran great and then a few weeks went past and something else started giving me trouble. I noticed a strong smell of fuel in the engine bay and had a very large amount of unburnt fuel pouring out the exhaust (Thought it was a diesel for a sec lol) so I knew something was dumping fuel like crazy, just as to what, I wasn't sure at first.

I tested resistance on all other components including the CSI and everything checked out with the specs in the FSM. But after starting the truck and having it run horrible, I unplugged the CSI, fired it back up and it ran smooth. The RPMs were a little higher than normal, but ran good otherwise. So I figured I would swap out the CSI with a NOS one I found (Dealer says these are discontinued) and sure enough, my gut was right despite all the negative comments I was given trying to diagnose this issue.

I'm glad to drive the 80 again after a month and being boggled and being told that I can't order a CSI from anywhere.

The next thing I want to change on the truck before it goes, would be the Alternator. I wouldn't mind swapping to the Larger AMP alt from the Toyota V8s, but I don't want the hassle of removing the Air pump and de-smogging the 3F-E.

No this Snorkel is actually molded the same as the Safari brand one. Just doesn't have the Logo on it. It fits really nice, I just want to change the Poly boot that ties it to the Air box.

So, what isn't discontinued for the 3F-E? EGR Valve/Gasket, Oxygen sensors, Cold Start Injector... Anything else? What does everyone do when they can't get new parts anywhere? Just run used?

Still can't get this truck to run right, The AFM, ISC and TPS all measure out with the provided Resistance in the FSM.
