The other day wile browsing through the forums I saw some pics of this dash box that works as a storage compartment and right way I knew I had to have one as well!

The one I saw!

The padded dash on my 40 is shot and like any other 40 owner, I could used a little more storage space! Since they cost around $300 and I freaking love projects I decided to build my own!

As always, do it on paper before cutting any sheet metal!

Nice job on the center storage box! Also thanks for posting the photo of the dash storage box; first time I've seen it. It looks like a great idea.

Started working on the dash storage compartment!

Hey everyone! Like I mentioned last time I really liked the idea of getting rid of the old torn dash pad and put a storage dash box up there! Well, I started building mine last week. I looked at a bunch of pics of the ones already for sale and wrote down what I was going to make different on mine. There were a few things I just didn't like with the design of the ones out there.

I started by making some kind of patterns with cheep board so there is no wasted metal!

Also had to drill out the long bracket that supports the original pad. Clean the area, prime and paint it.

Some pics of the box build. I was using the bolts from the windshield frame just to help hold the box wile I set things in place, it's not gonna be bolted there! I like it so far!

Here are a couple pics of the spare tire mount with new bolts, new lock stud, all painted and installed in place with the spacers I made so the door can swing further out.

Your dashbox is coming along nicely... makes me wish I had a brake. From what I've read, one of the biggest problems are rattles. I'd add some braces front to back to increase rigidity and also prevent things sliding from side to side. Tuffy uses neoprene gasket material for their gaskets... might also work well to seal a dash box.:D

I'm actually gonna divide it into two by welding a center wall inside the dash box! Also two lids, left and right! The other thing is the cut outs for the cluster and glove box.
Still making up my mind as the shape for the lids! I don't want just a flat surface on top!

Sounds interesting. some extra bends will increase the top's rigidity. It would be super slick if the top mimicked the lines of an oem top.

I'll make it to resemble the original one but I'm not going for perfect match!

Here is what I was drawing earlier. This would be a sideways view!

I'm also gonna have it fading down at the ends like the oem so it clears the wing window.
My main issue with the ones being sold today is that they stop right next to the windshield brackets and in my opinion it just doesn't look right!

Hence why I'm making my own!

dude...

nice work.

wish I had those skills and TIME.

Thanks, I wish I had time as well! It's hard to get out and get something done these days! It's usually little bits at a time!

This past weekend I got around to clear some surface rust off the top of the side walls and rear hatch since my roof is hanging in the garage! Cleaned it all up, sprayed some primer and got some green back up there!

Here is the hatch with fresh green!

Also got around and put some drip check (sealer) around all the seams on my center console! Waiting to spray the undercoating on it. I'll probably do it this coming weekend!

What's your plan for clearing the windshield knobs?

The one thing I don't like about the original Dashman dash box is that it doesn't cover the knob housings. It just looks funny to me. It looks like you're extending yours over the knobs.

Yeah, I don't think they look good stoping next to the knobs! I'm going over and will make something similar to the stock dash pad. The usable box space is in between the knobs but it will resemble the original as far as the ends go!
