Got back to KL a little earlier than normal, so brought the 40 out to the office! I now have a much better view from my office window...

Bought the road tax this morning - RM801 for 6 months, but haven't stuck it on the window yet - going to buy a new screen, so the road tax will live in the glove box for a while! I should have waited a little longer and bought the tax in Sarawak - half price!

Replaced back cylinders, changed the clutch fluid which was more like chocolate sauce! Took it to my friends place and then jumped in his BJ40 with Volvo C303 Axles, Supra Turbo engine, air lockers and a few other bits n pieces. Met up with his friend in another BJ40 - red with Ninja axles (no lockers!).

Drove an hour or so on the highway and then off into the Malaysian jungle for a bit of fishing - my first Kelah fish! Some great stretches of serious muddy stuff! The vid doesn't really show the steep angles, but all good fun!

Good fun! - YouTube

After the first set of stills is a clip where Lee, in the yellow beast, is towing Ben. The undulating slope was about 35 to 40 degrees! The noise of the rev limiter and blow off from the turbo was awesome!

As a side note, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but what is up with that bezel? I thought all 40 series bezels were asymmetrical (upper bar being thicker than he lower), not true?

Love the video!

Sent from deep in the mountains of Honduras using only sticks and rocks.

It was just a nice day out for these guys. Lee has so much confidence in his 40 that he knows he can pull his friend through the whole trip if he had to. They don't seem to mind using the winch for a couple of sections - all part of the fun. At the end of the trip, we went to the car wash - another river near the end of the run. I wish I had got out at the bank as it would have been some good footage of these two boating thorugh the river to wash the mud off!

nice shots... love the mud.....
thanks for sharing...

Bought a new set of tie rod ends a few weeks ago and finally got round to fitting them. I borrowed a seperator tool from a friend and set to work tonight. It has taken me nearly 2.5 hours, but WOW! What a difference!! Who needs power steering??

Just bought a few more bits from Jakarta too - new speedo cable, oil gauge, oil pressure sender, water temp sender and a few other pieces.

Haven't updated this thread for a while.....sorry!

Keep working on bits n pieces as I go along, which is one of the joys of these trucks.

One of the things that arose after changing the wheels, was that the tyres now rubbed on the rear fenders, so we had to chop out a bit of metal! Lee has a Jap import BJ42 sitting in his shop - the factory wheel archees are bigger than the 40, so we used that as a template.

Once all that was done and re-sprayed, I then thought about getting some better springs. New springs are quite expensive over here, so I decided to get my old ones re-bent. The results, with new shocks, gave me about a 3 inch lift over my old ones!

Next on the list was to change the rear drums to disks. I searched on Mud and asked around. It turns out that I could use disks from a Mitsubishi Pajero! A visit to a few of the junk yards led me to a pile of axles!

I selected one that seemed to have everything I needed in good shape, with the handbrake on the caliper - this is from an L049 Pajero.

When it came to fitting the disks though, I discovered that my handbrake is actually at the gearbox end, not the rear axle! These ones are not gonna work. The workshop boss then said he had a set that would fit - off a later Pajero (I think it is the V40 series). This actually has the hanbrake as a drum brake inside the disk, but I don't need the handbrake - just the disk and caliper. We swapped axles and the transformation took place!

It also transpired that the L049 disks would need to be lathed out to fit, but the V40 I was using were a straight swap - perfect fit!

New brackets had to be fabbed up....

The result....AWESOME!!!! Wish I had done this as one of the first mods!! I can't tell you how much better my brakes are, but probably 10 times better and can now stop in a straight line....QUICKLY!!!

Great work!!! Looks really good! :)
