Shopping!

I'm in Jakarta for a few weeks (working) and heard that you could buy most, if not everything you need for a BJ40 here. Apparently, there is a large shopping centre with car parts stores inside.

Knowing this, I kinda built up a picture in my mind of large shops with stores behind. The reality was different. The taxi dropped me off at Atrium Senen - a large shopping centre with families waiting outside and inside, a whole range of department stores, restaurants, clothes shops, boutiques and everything in between. This didn't look very promising, but as I kept going up the escalators to Level 5, an array of tiny parts stores stretched out for as far as I could see! Tiny, means about 6 to 8 foot square! I had a walk through and called in at one of the larger stores with the Toyota logo - about 10 feet by 20 feet, packed with boxes on the shelves. They didn't speaak any English, but with my limited Indonesian, I managed to tell them what I was looking for - so they gave me the parts manual to look through.

Having trawled through the pages, I managed to give them a list of the part numbers for the stuff I needed and they then told me I had to go to the Hard-Top store, where they have everything for the BJ!!

My list....

Full set of window rubbers (apart from the windshield I already bought) - Rp500,000
New set of door & ignition locks - Rp250,000
Gear shift decal for the glove box - Rp200,000
Outer door handles - Rp120,000 for the pair
Inner door handles - Rp150,000 for the pair
Door pulls - Rp40,000 for the pair
Door pull bezels - Rp 40,000 for the pair
Door window channel - Rp200,000 for the pair
Windshield knob - Rp200,000
Hood latch set (windshield and sides) - Rp200,000
Rubber stops for the hood (full set) - Rp50,000
Tail lights (complete) - Rp150,000 for the pair
Interior lamp - Rp50,000
TOYOTA, Land Cruiser & 4WD emblems - Rp150,000
Rear reflectors - Rp120,000 for the pair
Weahterstrip set for hard-top to body (upper and lower) - Rp400,000

So the total of Rp2,790,000 is about US$305!! The only original part is the windshield knob (to tighten the windshield to the dash - one broke when I was unscrewing it!) - everything else is a copy, mostly from Taiwan!

Some of the window seals are locally made - they grow rubber trees here! The other parts are all in a box, waiting for me to fly off back home, so I don't know the manufacturer until I open the box again - I'm in a hotel, so don't wanna go looking for new tape!

Just added up how much it would have been from one of the US suppliers - $1385 + shipping!!

"HAPPY!"

Just remember not all parts are created equal. Build is looking good. Does the ac work? If you need something from ccot Im not too far away from them. Some stuff of theirs is very good some just ok. MIke

They had original parts there too, to compare and this stuff is pretty close. Don't know how the rubber will last, compared to the original, but I guess I will soon find out.

As for the AC, the guys are just installing a new radiator, filter and hoses. That should do the trick! The seats are being re-upholstered now and will be ready on Wednesday.

I'm flying back home next weekend, so shall see how she's getting on.........and what other parts I need! If she is painted, I guess next Saturday will be spent in the workshop, installing seats, glass and the bit's n pieces I've just bought!

I have found aftermarket rubber can be cracked and gone in 2 years, highly disappointing when so much work is involved. Maybe youll get lucky. Back flush that heater core really well. Mike

Went back there today, but the shop was closed! Looks like a normal shopping centre for these parts - if you look closely, you can see two blurry people sliding down the cables through the center of the mall! (sorry about the lousy phone foto's!)

Don't quite know how you are supposed to find what you want at this stall... maybe you just have to keep looking until you find something that may be of use!

Had a treat on the way back, when I saw this....

Awesome pics...thanks for sharing. It all looks a lot like what you would find in Central America too. ;)

Not a happy bunny!

I'm still stuck in Jakarta and the guys at the shop seem to have decided the car needs to be finished quickly and have slapped the first coat on her! They ignored my requests to remove the foot plates, doors, fenders and hood, so sprayed over everything. They also ignored my requests to remove the rear quater windows until a friend of mine went round to see the car on my behalf! Now they have to do more work to get it right, but they still won't take the doors off as it took them a long time to align them.

I guess you really do get what you pay for!

Well that's a bummer! It can be hard to get people to do what we want here in the states and it's crazy hard to get things done the way you want in third world-ish countries! It does look good though...nice classic color!

Spent the day at the workshop yesterday..........and it will not be ready this week......or next! The colour is not the same one as the colour chart - it does say Tropical Beige on the can, but it is more cream than the beige sample on the chart. The paint supplier came over and tried to argue that it looked different on a small sample, but when I peeled off the sample and stuck it on the car, he agreed that it was different and would talk to the company!

The bodywork guy was saying the door rubbers were too thick - the front ones seem to be different to the originals, so I shall check that out in Jakarta, but the back ones were ok. The problem was, that he has changed the door alignment before fitting the seals, so I took off the door to demonstrate, which revealed a loose hinge, which meant a trip to the parts store to pick up a new pin and bushes, which also means painting that section again.

The car was then marked up for all the other unfinished paint - including the back windows, which, although they cut out, did not sand and spray over! As they are spraying about 50% of the body again, I've asked them to take off the foot-plates. I shall try and get some more from Jakarta, but if not, might ask the bodywork guy to make up some new ones.

The dash looks crude, but I can't trust them to get that right, so shall do that another time. The seats look great, but they lost the door panels somehow, so had to go to the car, measure up and then make them up! They just made them flat though, so will now have to re-make them with the original pattern, which lady boss wasn't too happy about.

We shall keep the colour as it is - it will still contrast against the white roof and will probably grow on me. At least it is not pink!!

Oh man I'm super sorry that things seem to be going bad there! You seem to have the right attitude towards it all though...at least on your thread. ;) Stay strong and keep trekking cause it's gonna look awesome I'm sure! :D

Well, managed to fly home for a short weekend and finally pulled the BJ out of the body shop! Disappointed in the finish, but I’m not gonna do anything to improve it this time round. Still need to put the badges on and fix some wiring, but the first thing to fix are the BRAKES!! Pulled out of the workshop and onto the main road…………….SH*T….NO BRAKES!!! Pumped the pedal a few times and found a bit of resistance. Engine braked down toward the lights and slowly crawled over to my friend’s workshop. Jacked her up and found the left rear drum leaking. It took about an hour to get the cover off and found one leaking cylinder and the other locked solid. Due to delays at the body shop, it was now around 6pm. Despite best efforts, the parts shops were all closed and the spare axles around Lee’s workshop were all single cylinder models, so will not fit! I’m going to be back in Jakarta for 2 weeks, so what to do?
We decided to clean out the leaking cylinder, box her up, re-fill and see how she stops. Turns out, I may have a problem with the master, so have front braking, but no rear! After a short test drive, I have front brakes, but not very good front brakes. Decided to take her home….s.l.o.w.l.y and sort it out when I get back in a couple of weeks.
Not much time for photo’s, so just a few with her new stable mates – a TVR Chimaera and a Ferrari Testarossa (they are not mine tho btw!).

I’ll take some more when I get her fixed and out of the workshops!

Not much progress I'm afraid - I can only get back to KL every 2 or 3 weeks for a short weekend! Fly in on Friday night and back out to Jakarta on Sunday night! Sorry I haven't been back to your place yet - just no time at present! I did manage to get the steering box and linkage on tho - MUCH improved steering!!!

Thanks!
