Hi! IF you're willing to share, I thought it might be helpful for the rest of us to better understand what the market prices are for the 200 series (and LX 570 I suppose). I'm personally looking for one, have found a few, and curious what others' purchase prices have been so I can negotiate (or not) properly.

Please share purchase price, year, mileage at purchase, and location (east/west/south, etc...)

Thanks and happy hunting for those also looking.

Why would you pay the BaT fees? Just take the ban and walk away? Is the seller really going to come after you for breach of contract?
As a general policy, failure to complete a purchase on the site can result in the loss of your buyer's fee charged to your card and a revocation of site privileges. To avoid these actions being taken, we encourage you to contact the seller in order to finalize the deal or reply to me with any concerns that we can help address.

So they charge you the buyer fee immediately upon auction ending? I thought it wouldn't be until the final payment is processed and vehicle changes hands. Yikes! Maybe you can use the failed PPI appointment as reasoning to get that buyer's fee back.

Interesting. Thanks for updating. Never j own what you’re getting into. All used cars have their surprises……..

BaT pre-authorizes your credit card as soon as your bid is placed. (5% of the amount) If you win the auction it clears, if you lose it just falls off. Technically one could dispute and charge back with your bank/CC company but that will certainly result in a ban from their site.

As for BAT, never again. I will stick to what has worked for me which is to find owner/enthusiast listings without the middleman.
I’ve come close to winning a couple of cars on there but things never panned out. I still like to browse but in recent years it seems to cater more to flippers and dealerships with deep pockets and less to enthusiasts who are looking for a good deal.

Yeah, that's wild. I'd never agree to those terms.

Generally speaking to even get a bidder’s card at a collector/enthusiast auction, it’s a minimum $100. For many in-person auctions it’s $200+. This is non-refundable, plus you have to typically show a bank letter of guarantee. And then you get the privilege of paying an 8 to 10% buyer’s premium on top of the selling price. BaT is a bargain in terms of fees compared to the legacy auction houses. This is especially true in the 6 figure plus range where BaT is currently capped at $7500 and others are not. Auctions aren’t for everyone; it is a fun yet also terrible way to buy cars.

Nonrefundable $100-$200 would be a lot more reasonable. Burning $2k though, ouch.

Regardless IMO a 200 is not a collector vehicle. To even claim it's an enthusiast vehicle is a stretch. In my area these are soccer mom specials - kids spilling mtn dew and smearing pb&j's all over the back seats. Maybe there's an argument that a low mileage 200 and/or HE is. But certainly not a 2011 with 100k+ (even if it has a supercharger). Which is to say this is the wrong medium for acquiring this type of vehicle.

With how BAT buyer fee is structured it seems the correct move was to arrange for a PPI before you even bid?

Anyways it's been done, let's get back on Topic, someone talk me out of that 2013 LX with 117K miles before i go snag it up. Seems like a good deal, and they drive and look better than pre 2016 LC

BaT has really screwed up value perception of the 200 and Land Cruisers in general.

I'll talk you out of it. You already have 5 vehicles.

Hehe very true but the vehicles i buy don't really depreciate. So it's not like i'm buying something useless. A rust free 13+ LX with 117K miles is worth at least 30K in my area. Everything here is rusted and rust free ones fetch a high premium. I'm trying to talk myself into it, only problem i have right now is with the government shut down, TSA security lines at the airport is crazy and the ticket prices are even crazier.

BRB telling my wife the 21 HE is a collectors vehicle!

Get it, drop by my place for the first night of travel (dfw)

Sure, all due diligence should be completed before placing a bid. However, it’s no different than showing up at Barrett-Jackson. In fact, at B-J as all you can do is visually inspect a vehicle, maybe crawl around it. It’s not like you can take them for a drive or have a mechanic give you any sort of diagnostic. You bid, you win, you buy. There’s no mechanism of walking away because you find a flaw or get cold feet after the fact. With BaT, you can have a 3rd party inspect if the seller is able to accommodate. Or you can travel to the vehicle beforehand if you deem it worth your time and money. All auctions are a bit of gamble but then again that’s the nature of buying a car sight unseen, and really, any used car.

And for clarification, my collector/enthusiast comment is about how other auction houses market themselves. I don’t think B-J, Mecum, BaT, or Cars & Bids are going to simply say they’re a used car marketplace. They are operationally different than the local auto auction used by dealers in terms of their audience and who has access.

LX 570.

Ya I was thinking some more about pre-bidding PPI.
It's just not that realistic because you are not going to go around and arrange PPI on cars where the sale price is "unknown".
Versus, if i find a car on classifieds, you can make a better judgement call on whether you need a PPI based on the listing price. If I see a LC200 for 15K, I am already assuming I am going to find some stuff on the PPI and pass on the car. Or I find one for 60K i am gonna say na that's much for me right now, next car.
Honestly the sellers should put up a solid PPI on the car, I know that's what I would do I were to sell one on BAT.

My view is a little different having bid, prepped and sold used cars from auctions many years ago. It is simple…there is a reason they are at auction. Most sellers know what is wrong with their cars before they auction them.

Apples and oranges. BaT is not your grandpa's last-resort auction site.
