Does anybody know what Monstaliner looks like WITHOUT adding a tint? I'm curious...
@magnetman do you know?

Thanks

I was planning on using a small portion of tint to get my off white color, and he warned against it that it would be more transparent. Instead, he had me mix white with the killer beej off white.

Based on that, I assume it would be more transparent.

Thanks!

It's kind of a foggy clear before adding the tint. The part b is purple.

Well I finally did it. 2 gallons of Coppa Feel for the exterior and 1 gallon of black for trim. I let my wife pick the color and I'm glad i did. Came out really nice and has a retro vibe. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Hope it lasts a solid 10yrs. We shall see?

Veggie80, how'd you get the line between colors so clean? Mine is black Monstaliner now, but I have some serious body damage to repair then I'll be doing some sort of dark green, maybe army green like #mryanangel 's Dirty Koala build. I would like to do this bottom half trim effect with Pyroclastic maybe, but want it to be really clean break. I'll probably be thinning it out good and spraying it high pressure. that gave me a nice smooth texture the first time around. Anyone know what prep I need to do before going over the old black coat? i saw something about phosphate wash on the FAQ but that's for applying over Rhino liner and the like...

Got any pictures of your texture? I'd like something more on the smooth side...

Not sure how to link quickly/ I'm on my phone. Page 3 of "RTH rolled 80 in Menden, VT" has a bunch at the bottom.

Used frog tape for the lower black trim line over top of 2 coats of the coppa feel. I wanted it to look like the raised trim. Think it worked out pretty good. Did 3 coats of black and let it sit for 45 minutes before I pulled the tape. Some parts wanted to lift with the tape, but it is still soft enough to push back in place. My texture is very much like orange peel, with a good amount of shine. If you lay it heavy and don't roll back through it to much, you could get a much smoother finish.

Good to know. That's the texture I will be going for with my black or pyro trim.

Does anyone know what a pint of base toner should run from an auto paint place? I got quoted $97 for a pint and $175 for a quart from a local place for the factory 8B2 blue toner without any balancers, binders or reducers added to it.

The sample chips I got from Monstaliner weren't close enough to the factory Toyota blue, so I'm looking to color match it with independently sourced pigment.

I would be careful with mixing your own toner in. Montaliner is sensitive to the toner you use and there are a bunch of folks that have found the Monstaliner to set up very very quickly (20mins) when mixing their own colors. This is the primary reason I had Eric at Monstaliner custom mix up the Toyota Army Green color for me...took the gamble out of the equation.

Good call. I might try getting in touch with him about that when I order the kit for the exterior. I was going off of the recommendation @magnetman left on the first page of this thread.

If you went to a local auto paint store this is what you need to specify:

(I want to purchase only the toner portion of my vehicle color for 1 full gallon of BASECOAT. Omit any binders, balancers or reducers called for in the formula - use pigmented toners only. Do not use water-based or lacquer-based colorants.)

I just thought that I would throw this out there in case anyone's interested-sorry because it's a bit of a hijack.

This company says they can custom mix just about any color you want for use with Als liner:

At $20/pint compared to $100/pint locally, this may be the route to take if they can custom mix a color close enough to the factory 8B2 blue.

magnetman is Eric, and you can tint it yourself, but his recommendation was to give him a paint sample on steel that he could then use to color match using his system. It took a few months to get the color, but I was happy I went that way.

Agreed. The bedliner itself is about half the cost too. Again, sorry for the hijack.

I apologize for my absence over the recent months. We just completed a major move from New York to Alabama. Built a new manufacturing plant and things are just getting back to normal.

These are the current guidelines for tinting with auto paint tints. We're now recommending PPG Shopline Single Stage Toners only. $100 for a pint of tint purchased locally may be a bit much so I would check around to see what you can find.

Here's an update on my project that is running a coat of freedom fried

Sweet!! Thanks for posting up Eric, much appreciated with the guidance on only going with PPG. Hoping to get this done this year, got the new mtb out of the way and now working on suspension for the truck.

Started my monstaliner project last week. I would definitely say I grossly underestimated the time required. Getting the bumper, snorkel and sliders off took a day by itself.

This is after the first coat. Did the second coast last night (in the dark with a lamp. It was awful).
