I like em all Nolan, your better than MS Roads!

I appreciate that Noel. I have decided to embrace this crazy state we call Mississippi......lots of great things to see and eat for sure.

Long long day today. I had to be in Greenville early and then back over to Grenada then Vardaman. For those of you that don't know geography, that is about 260 miles give or take before noon. I got to Grenada about 10:40 so I poked around a bit waiting for my lunch to be ready for pickup at 11:00

This is the same RR track that runs down the side of my farm. They are reactivating it. I am seeing lots of fuel cars parked on the tracks from Grenada to Canton, but no real use yet.

So after I left Grenada I had lunch in Vardaman about an hour east of Grenada. The nurse practitioner that works there told me about a cool road leading south out of there. I took it and then decided to just stay off road. Man. This part of Mississippi is crazy remote.

This cemetery was c1850 in the middle of nowhere

Every heard of Bellafontaine Mississippi?

This is on 82 at Stewart Mississippi where I crossed the Big Black. One major factor you have to figure when running the gravel routes in Mississippi is the major watersheds we have and the limited bridges to cross them.

Right after Stewart I was back in the thick of it.

I literally almost died once when a log truck and I met in a corner. We both locked up at the same time and I slid in ditch and he came to a stop about 6' from me. If either of us had not seen each other immediately I would have eaten the rear wheels. I had to select some of the special buttons on the 4Runner to get out.

I am not exactly sure where this was, but I know I was west of French Camp. They had clear cut both sides of this road for a mile or so and it was on the top of the world. I didn't feel like I was in Mississippi

Can you imagine what happens in here?

IMG_6349-X3.jpg

This was not the full gospel church....just a pretty church somewhere in Attala County which is a bad ass backroad county. I bet 80% of this county is gravel.

Not sure what town this was. I have to look at my notes...found it.....McAdams......Ive never heard of these towns.....

So, I won't bore you with the turn-by-turn, but I will post the map when I make it. I went 118 miles from Vardaman to the north tip of Madison County and only 18 of them were paved. Great roads too. Some wide open and fast some were tight and rutted.

McAdams is where my Grandpaw Tolleson grew up.

I chipped off another nice section of my Trans Mississippi Dirt Road map today.

I finished work at 2 in Memphis and instead of waiting around for Cam to get his s*** together for the southbound Cottonland Express I took off east to Holly Springs National Forest.

In 45 minutes I was turning south off Highway 72 just east of Michigan City. I was 5 miles from the Tennessee border when I hit gravel southbound and soon turned east through Canaan MS.

50% of the ground I covered today was nice big roads like this. Most of the time, its 70-80%

The terrain in this part of Mississippi is nice. Following my new GPS program and Google Maps, I was able to pick my way south along the east side of the National Forest.

After I crossed MS370 just west of Faulkner, the road was going to take me way out of the National Forest east before I was able to head back south and west but the LeadNav GPS showed a good road that connected the one I was on with a marked Google Maps road to the south. I saw lots of tracks so I tried it. Mind you, a HUGE thunderstorm had just passed making the gravel roads perfect with no dust.

I run in 4 High on the gravel most always because it can be super slick, even when dry. Most of the road crews keep a nice crown on them and deep ditches on the sides. If you need to make big moves, it is best to have all 4 wheels working with you. The 4Runner does a real nice jod of braking the inside tires when overpowering a gravel turn. I am getting real spoiled by it.

So the road went bad and muddy and narrow as hell fast. I pressed on to the point that it was just barely wide enough and all the mud holes had to be attacked head on. No way around it. I selected the high range Terrain Select button and just pushed hard on most of the big holes.

I was able to get at least one side of my truck up on a rut or the bank up to this point. Here, I actually got out and checked the depth. It was deep.

I had the GoPro going up to about 1 mile before this. It REALLY would have been a nice video as I hit it way too hard since I was at the edge of the world with no winch and no cell service. Problem was, I ran over the GoPro and packed mud all in it. I had the non waterproof door on the back.

IMG_0724-X3.jpg

I made it, but I for sure used all the noise making bells and whistles doing it. I had that moment where it all just felt like it stopped then the truck made a bunch of weird noises and it just kind of levitated out of the mud. I'm not sure what happened but afterwards I got this cool picture for Instagram.

After the County Road turned into a Pig Trail, I popped back on some decent grave until I got to Highway 4 at the Tippah River where I stopped for a poser shot before turning back south toward Highway 78 and Potts Camp my dinner destination

Potts Camp is along Highway 78 and is the halfway point for the National Forest leg of the journey. I have had this BBQ joint there bookmarked for some time so I did all this mudding and scratching of the paint to get here.

IMG_6392-1597x1252.jpg

This is your quintessential dive backroad BBQ joint. $14.50 for a 3 meat plate with sides and it was SUPERB. Even the brisket was good. No black pepper crust like TX but perfectly smoked.

IMG_6393-X3.jpg

So, I have TN line to Highway 78 at Potts Camp logged and Vardaman to I-20 Logged. That is about 75% of North Mississippi. I will get Vardaman to Potts Camp done easily and soon.

It is the Bovina to Biloxi part that is going to take time since I don't work in that part of the state.

Stay tuned.......

Very cool^^^

We did a father son event there last year. Lots of fun. i would have been a terrible soldier. Every time i popped my head up to take a peek, i got lit up right in the face. Those jokers hurt too.

Almost 2 weeks since I updated this.

Last Thursday I had to go to Vardaman then Tupelo before I got the road to Bomar's house. I had all day to do this 500 miles so I tried to plot my way hitting some more National Forest roads and all backroads.
I stopped at Glenwild on 51 south of Grenada and took some poser pics by that super cool barn but they were crap so I just kept this one

After loading up on biscuits at The Biscuit Pit I made my appt in Vardaman and had an hour to blow getting up to Tupelo so I hit Holly Springs National Forest.

Great backroads in there and gorgeous terrain. I drive from Houston to a tiny town called Van Vleet before I had to call off the adventure and head to Tupelo.
