I currently have my engine out of my FJ40 and figured that while it was out it would be a good time to get some parts blasted and painted. I saw that some people have had good luck with using the Kaehr Corporation, but I wanted to see if there were any other recommendations. Paul had suggested Albuquerque Monument & Engraving, but when I contacted them, they told me that they no longer did this type of blasting. They suggested Master Blaster, but I kind of felt like there prices were a bit high. Finally, my headers have a lot of surface rust and I would like to get them cleaned up and coated as well. I know that some people on Mud have used high temperature paint with varied success and that ceramic coating seems to be the better albeit more expensive option. What experiences have you all had with coating your headers?

Thanks,

Ian

What's the current going rate ($/hr) for blasting parts? Just curious.

Headers? None. I looked at pulling the old header out of the 4R and having it ceramic coated. Seems there were several companies online that offered this service.

I've noticed that Kaehr's pricing on blasting has gone way up. When I had da'40 done I thought they were reasonable. Recently, I took them a pair of fenders and for the first time thought they were getting greedy.

Alternative, if you can wait. Diesel Dan has done small stuff blasting for me in the past. He flies for a living, and recently moved to CO. But, his parents are here and he does come around often enough. PM him @ DanS HJ-45. He can also powder coat.

He will also know about the ceramic coating because I believe parts of his dads 40 were done that way.

I will try to get ahold of Dan soon. As far as current prices go, Master Blaster didn't give me a rate per hour, just a job price based on pictures I sent him. I am still waiting to hear back from Kaehr, but I will keep you informed. I should be calling a few more places soon, so I will try to post up with prices if I can.

Southwest Coating $75/hr, can also powdercoat

JTC, Inc. $85/hr, don't do sheetmetal, heavier duty blasting (frames, control arms, etc)

Team Synergy Coatings- They do ceramic coating and say they are the only ones in NM that do this (not sure if this is the case) $75/hr for blasting, roughly $225 to ceramic coat the headers. Sounds like they have some neat coatings that they can apply, some special thermal dispersant coating that helps disperse heat better, supposedly by up to 20% (skeptical, but hey, what do I know).

Master Blaster- Quoted me $175 to do the headers, aircleaner assy, radiator mount, and skid plate. Did not seem to want to give an hourly rate, but when pressed said $150/hr. Sounds negotiable, but clearly better rates are out there.

Anyone out there that has used any of the places that I have listed thus far (besides Kaehr)?

Who has the capability to do an 80 series frame? I might get mine done while I have the body off too.

Kaehr did my 40 frame, no problem. Powdered it too.

Beno- JTC specifically said that they could do frames, but I think they use rougher materials to blast which could warp sheetmetal. I never specifically mentioned frames when I talked to the other places.

My dad has had synergy ceramic coat two sets of headers for his t-buckets and loves it.
Had a buddy do the turbo on his powerstroke and swears it lowered his EGTs.

Did your buddy with the turbo have it done with their thermal dispersant coating? I guess it must work somewhat then, just was skeptical that it would disperse heat 20% better, although I have never heard of that coating until yesterday.

That's the stuff. My dad uses it on his t-buckets so that nobody gets burned on the exposed pipes.

Hey guys, just seeing this post now... I have a friend in Los Lunas who owns Coating Solutions that does high pressure baking soda blasting. He's on the tail end of his cancer treatments and would like some work after the 1st of the year. His name is Charlie Best and I can put you in touch with him if anyone is interested.

Thanks! C.J.

I believe Diesel Dan had used this company and has good things to say.

Yep. We used Charlie. Glad to hear he's doing better, because I'll be needing stuff blasted again in the somewhat near future...

Very pleased with Coating Solutions.

Dan
