Well, I went to see @Land Shark to look at his small camper trailer build. Forgot to take pics. Let him drive it around the hood to compare to his 40. He came back with all smiles. Then we flexed it out in his ditch a little.
All in all we did 20 miles or so with no issues. Top speed may have been 50 mph with one finger on the wheel. I did not do enough cornering to feel like I needed a sway bar.
I feel someone could do this with a 8" shock and have it about level front to rear. As it sits I have about 4.5" of up travel and a bunch of droop.
My whole purpose is for a softer ride on the trails.
In the pics, it still has a bunch to droop and compress.
So cost is still not final. Figure shocks, brackets, tabs, shipping springs back and forth, I think I am at the $3000 mark, not including my time. Easily 40 hours.
Just an FYI for anyone thinking of going down this road. I have tried to show all parts and where they came from. Shocks are the most expensive part at over 2k. I have shipped several sets of springs and will need to send several sets back. That is all part of it. About $60 each way for a set of 4 across the country from Kali.
I spent at least three weeks of intense link calculator, CAD, and flexing get my front links built, then did the rear in about an evening, not including relocating the upper coilover mounts.
It feels a little softer on the bounce test. I had to crank in 1" more preload than before to be at 4" of up travel, where the last set up was 1/2" preload and 4 1/2" up. It should flex a bit better too. It started raining on me today, so no test drive. I did get the rest of the other things done that I needed, so now I can bolt the bump stops in and be ready for Relic Run this weekend down at Uwharrie. It will get a good test then. I am sure it will be a little softer on the street too. I may try to run it around some this week but plan to load it on the trailer Tues or Wed before pulling out early Thursday.
I am still sprung under so I needed to go off the frame.
Curious to see what you come up with for spring rates when you do the rear ? My 40 is on 150/220, might be soft but it holds her up at proper ride height, we'll see what a 400lb load out does. No fast corners......

I did JK rear coils on mine a couple years ago with a 4 link. Flexes really well. But the spring rates just aren't right for my 40 with the spare hanging off the rear and the kids in the back. Works out pretty well empty, but trail loaded I have the Carolina squat.
I am changing to coilovers later this late spring/summer just for better adjustability. Just my .02 from my ride.
So I flexed it out on my buddys trailer this past week end at Relic Run.
I need to figure out the bind in the front end. I think it may be the 30 year old bushings in the radius arm. I did not want to change them until made sure the rest of it works. I will go back with oem.
So thought,
-Road manors are great.
-washboard gravel roads at 20mph, no problem. Much better
-small softball and a little larger, nuisance rocks, so much better. I was keeping up with a built 200
-Flex....not that great, but better than before. I think bushings may help with that
-spring rates???I need to figure out bind or is it springs that is not allowing it to flex. I thought it might be the cross-overs on the shocks coming in too soon, but i can see in pics that they are not touching yet. thoughts are bushings Overall ride-great I let a few friends bomb around the field and they had big grinds!
-proof of concept works!
