Thwarted again!

So the great big A/W intercooler core I ordered, after over 20 hours of work ended up being about 3/4" to large to get under the hood. Damn it. lol. I am not going to cut a big hole out of my hood so back to the smaller IC. Going to stick with just the water/meth injection and drop the boost from 17psi to around 14psi that should lower temps out of the turbo about 40 degrees.

On this size engine you really are on the cusp if you want to run a single turbo and get great response. Something the size of the GTX35, BW8374, or PT62 will all give you lower IAT's but not have as much low end torque or spool as quickly, but allow high HP. Kind of a trade off if you want 400hp+

If I was going to do it again, at this power level I would just go ahead and step up to that next turbo size. But again that is my own personality and really the truck feels great even at 8psi and a lot of people could just run that and be happy. lol. #turboguineapig

Body lift?

no IC is mounted to passenger fender. Not a huge deal, and everything will last longer at 14psi anyways, it is probably a good thing as the LX will be going from toy to DD. lol.

And really for the most part you could run 17psi and be just fine. I am just planning worst case scenario, you get into a situation where you are pulling a long steep grade and under boost for extended time the temp would creep and possibly lead to some detonation. For most cases it is just fine and I haven't had any issues. Just doing what we do best on ih8mud and overthinking s***. lol.

Nooooooooo!!...take to the under bonnet bracing with a grinder to fit that sucker in there.
I would definitely be MAKING that cooler fit in there with that much money & time going into it.

Or you could donate it to me :D...I promise to make good use of it

Trust me I already thought about it. But I have tried very hard to keep this truck clean and relatively unmolested from the outside. For a minute the thought crossed my mind "oh it isn't so bad, it might look pretty cool to have a good cut out for an intercooler..." but it probably wouldn't and I am sure it would just look like I fxxxed up. Lol. We gave it a very valiant effort though. Relocated the cruise control, moved a couple water tank brackets, etc. It's just the core that I picked out with my old fabricator doesn't fit.

I was telling Delancy in another thread going back and knowing now what I know I might do things slightly differently but redoing them now would be very costly.

But the tuner did email me last night and told me not to worry about taking the boost down from 17psi to 14psi, it's just fine and that I was overthinking it. Lol

Tank was pulled and modified, pump is installed, wiring is done just waiting on the charge pipe to be repowder coated. Pictures suck since the new phone doesn't have a flash but very happy with how clean the work is.

Like most English built cars they are designed around an oil leak & electrical problems..only this time Land rover raised the bar to engine & transmission issues as well.

"Ryan, put the car on the dyno earlier today and made the changes for the meth injection and leaning out the cruising AFR's. On the dyno I couldn't get the AIT's to reach over 110's.., Seems to work very well and gave the truck some more power output alone."

So huge improvement as I saw 177 degrees on my before pull. I am pretty sure it is an insignificant power increase but we will see tomorrow when I go pick it up. Like I said before I wasn't looking for more power just lowered IAT's and it is a good byproduct.

**Might be a good option for the SC guys ;)

First off, I will have to admit to reading this entire build thread over the past couple days. Second, coming from someone who is passively searching for a 97 80 series, this has been an incredibly informative and insightful read. My guess is that I will end up reading this thread another 2-3x from beginning to end to make sure I get all of my "notes" in order.

Thank you for the highly detailed contribution!

Cheers

Ok with no timing, boost or fueling changes just with a very small nozzle water/meth injection the truck picked up some torque :) Didn't really need it but it was a byproduct of cooler charge temps, etc.

Using the same math calcs as before for pre and post numbers final numbers for the truck (and I am touching nothing else on the motor) are:

Pre 133awhp
Post 318awhp
239% x 212hp stock = estimated 506hp at the motor

Pre 186ft/lbs
Post 453ft/lbs
243.5% x 275ft/lbs stock = estimated 669ft/lbs at the motor

Blue line is water/meth with no changes to tune
meth pull.jpg

Just a bad photo but shows the post exhaust upgrade, post head rebuild pull in blue, and the after turbo but pre meth injection pull in red for a comparison.

Ryan, what is your boost set at now? Still 14psi? Those are some crazy numbers.

I need to see your truck and pick your brain before you split the great Alamo City. I sold my supercharger a while back to go turbo, just waiting on work to settle down.

Yes sir, the chemical intercooler. lol.

I know I harp on it a lot, but for a group of guys that are such total gear heads, it amazes me know one wants to know what happens when they put the SC on. Not a single IAT measurement that I could find. A couple guys did do the Intercoolers but the top mount in my opinion is an interheater as opposed to an intercooler at low speeds and crawling.
