Looking to install a turbo timer in my vehicle for the spring. I wouldn't mind purchasing a KHS timer, but does anyone know what kid of wiring/equipemt I'd need to install the unit? Is there another brand anyone can recommend? Any pics of an install on an HDJ81?

Thanks for the help guys,
Jeff

First of all, you SUCK!!!!:grinpimp::grinpimp: I wish I had your problem for a HDJ81.

Funny you bring that up, b/c I am looking at purchasing one too. I found this one. I like it b/c it shuts down when your temps reach a certain point, and not on a timer.

Thanks Arcteryx, that looks like a cool set up. I think I'd like to run just the timer though for my rig. Any experience with just the timer?

Not directly. My brother has a Greddy TT for his Civic. I've seen it and it works good- he just sets it for x minutes. No EGT gauge though, IIRC. He was just guessing on the time to cool.

Another option is to get an EGT guage and figure out how long it takes to get the temps to an acceptable range. Could be 20 seconds, could be 5 minutes. If it is not a long time, you might think about saving your money and not getting one. Just a thought.

I use an HKS which has worked really well. It is installed into my ashtray for complete concealment. HTH.

Hey there....

Check over at Best Buy Performance. They are on 149st and around 118th Ave. Any kind of performance thing (that is not curiser specific) they seem to be cheeper than anyone else in town. Mopac on 170 St isn't to bad either.... Both have easy access to them, I think Best Buy had them in stock last time I was in.....

And it dosen't matter if you get a timer.... You should have a EGT gauge....

Mine will run on pre-set cool down times (seconds-minutes) or an auto mode based on temp. A quick trip to the store won't cause it to idle but an hour on the highway might have it idle for a minute or more. (though you can overide anytime) Nice features.

Only idendtifying name on the unit is ULTRA.

*How does an egt guage assist with allowing the turbo to cool down?

The KHS timers are nice. Don't forget you will need to get the correct wiring harness for you 1hd-t. As I recall there are 2 or 3 different ones depending on the year / model truck.
They are readily available over here. Let me know if you need help to find one.

onefsatchevy has it right. You NEED an EGT guage. I was trying to say in politely above. That should be your first purchase.

An EGT (exhaust gas temperature) measures the exhaust temps off the manifold. If they are too high, then you may need a TT. There are variations of these. The one I suggested is the best IMO, because once the temps reach a certain SAFE temp, it will shut the engine off.

With a timer, it uses a counter instead of temps. What happens when your timer is set to 1 minute, but your temps are not low enough? It shuts off, defeating the purpose of the timer and potentially damaging your turbo. The only safe and surefire way is to know the temps with an EGT. If the longest it takes for your temps to cool off is 30 seconds, then a 60 second timer will most likely suffice. The catch is, what happens on the rare occasion that it does not? Are you willing to bet your HDJ81 on a timer?

Why bother with the timer? I doubt your application would benefit from one. I think they are better suited for high performance applications as oppossed to our working mules. Unless you're driving balls to the wall everywhere you go, then why? Although, I guess they are a great conversation piece for; "well you see there, my truck is Turbocharged"!:flipoff2:

Old thread .. I just get a greddy turbo timer and just wand to install it this sat .. ( or at least I would try ) .. does anyone can pint me where to found the speedo signal and if I can reach the swith signal from drivers ( LHD ) kick panel . .?

just wanna use the e-brake signal to .. but thought that it's really easy to found ..

thanks !

so, uh, no real harm then if it shuts of later rather than sooner...don't have an egt at the moment. and there was a thread on here regarding what time was right to set it...

i mean, if i pull off to tank up on diesel, right off the highway, i keepit running(and if i have to get off and grab something to eat, maybe a minute or two)...if i exit teh highway, then drive a few blocks in city speeds and then get to my destination, maybe 20/30 secs...

besides wasting some fuel...no biggy as long as it's not a prolonged idle (say over 5 minutes)??...

Yeah mate, no harm shutting it down later rather than sooner, but you still don't want the motor to idle for long periods. It's not necessary. Thats why an EGT gauge is beneficial, because you can watch your exhaust temps drop to a safe level and then shut the motor down. After prolonged highway driving, when the turbo is pretty much always on boost, i find that 2-3 minutes is sufficiant time for the turbo to cool. Driving around town off boost does the same thing and if you have an EGT gauge you can see this. Idling for 5 minutes or more is not necessary IMHO for the majority of us 4wdrivers.

the hd-t motor with the factory turbo is oil cooled and also water cooled.

From what I've read, it just doesn't take that long for the bearings to get cooled down to a point where it is safe to turn it off.

You may end up doing more damage to the motor via coking by idling it every time you drive it.

As some others have said, above, before getting the timer, get an EGT gauge to see what your temps really are. I've found that the time I spend driving to get to my driveway are always enough to get the temps under 600, and usually enough to get under 500. Another 20 seconds of idle while I gather up my junk, or close the windows, turn off the A/C and all that stuff.... I'm usually seeing under 400 pre-turbo, which is cool enough for me to feel comfortable shutting down.
