Anyone had good luck with local dealers for service lately? The GRC is coming up on its 6 month oil change and I'd like to make sure the experience isn't unpleasant. The first 3 years of oil changes was included in the price of the car so I plan to take advantage of that.
DO NOT GO TO Jim Coleman Toyota in Maryland.
Some background - I'm in Rockville, and we have a 2017 Toyota '86' (BRZ/FRS). A friend in the 86 club had a friend who had a new GR Corolla. Jim Coleman Toyota left the oil cap off during an oil change, blowing up the motor at just over 6,000 miles. This was this past fall.
Now, Jim Coleman did the owner right and gave them a new GR Corolla of equal or better specification/trim, and with some warranty or free servicing or the like to sweeten the deal.
But Jim Coleman has turned around that original GR Corolla and listed it for sale, with no mention of a new engine. And they've listed for a price that only makes sense for a GRC with a factory engine. You can see it here:
Jim Coleman Listing. The VIN is JTNABAAE1PA004184. The ad mentions a 'clean Carfax,' which I guess is true since they didn't report the engine replacement. They did give it a Toyota Certified 7yr/100k mile powertrain warranty. It feels like they're doing their best to not disclose they replaced the engine. I saw it in the showroom, and when I asked why the original owner sold it, a salesman told me 'They couldn't drive it,' in a way where I could tell he made that excuse up on the spot (I already knew why).
The only 'service' we've had done there is a MD state inspection for the 86, which went well. They washed it for free (nice courtesy) but then didn't dry it, leaving water spots everywhere. Does it really matter? No, but that doesn't give me great confidence on how much they care about customer vehicles.
Since I live <15 minutes away, I've been in a handful of times for parts. Their parts counter is frustratingly slow moving, especially if you need the part right then.
TLDR: Don't bring a GRC to Jim Coleman - they blew up a GR Corolla during an oil change. They made things 100% right for the owner, but are trying to pawn off the blown-up-and-fixed GRC to some unsuspecting buyer.
