Any recommended FJ40 mechanics around Treasure Valley?

After a 4th of July loop thru Garden Valley/Placerville/ID City/Horsheshoe Bend, my 78 FJ40 decided brakes weren't needed anymore. Was used to having to pump a little sometimes to get decent braking pressure, but suddenly went straight to floor leaving gas station. I could pump a lot and get a little pressure (tho slowly went to floor), so made it home last couple of miles. Reservoirs still full, no leaks, and no hissing or other noises.

Anyway, not sure where to start so figure maybe some pro help might be good start. Have used Maztech for daughters RAV4 and they are nice enough, but just was hoping there might be an FJ40 specialist somewhere.

The guy I used to use is 6-feet under. I've gone to Big O on 15th & Main a couple times since for brake work and had good results.

I wonder if you blew the rubber off your master piston? Worth a look.

Copy. And I can check the rubber off the piston by looking/doing?

You'd have to pull the master off and take it apart, you can buy a rebuild kit for them. But a new master isn't much more than the kit. You need to start troubleshooting somewhere, if you haven't blown out a wheel cylinder (which would show as a leak down the inside of your tire), then the only other component in the system is your master cylinder.

Cool. Wasn't sure where to start ... or if it was the booster, or master, or ??? So maybe I look at New soft lines if I have to drain the whole thing anyway since they are 40 years old.

LTS is a Toyota only shop in Boise off Executive Drive. See a lot of Cruisers there when I drive past...no affiliation, but if 40's are there,
they must do something with them...YMMV.

Cheers!

Copy. Thanks.

Bleeding the brakes after a master cylinder replace is usually the hardest part of the job. A good vacuum pump beats an extra pair of hands, err, extra foot.

I have a Mityvac vacuum pump you can borrow if you decide to tear into it yourself..

Cheers!

That's mighty generous ... let me see how far I manage to go, and then maybe will want/need to take you up on it. THANKS!

Scary as it is, it looks like I managed to pull it off so far ... put in new MC from Napa; bench bled; bled all around; and adjusted rear brakes ... and it brakes like a champ - no pumping to get pressure and brakes with no pull either direction.

Howdy,

I know a very good Land Cruiser mechanic here. Hes busy and takes referrals only.

I'll ask him if he's got time if you want?

Let me know

While this task is done, I know I will have some others (e.g. carb tuning) that would be great to have someone good to handle it ... nothing pressing and I'm usually pretty flexible on time (not my only driver) ... so please do

Bump on this. Here in Boise and new to fj if there are any locals around that know of a shop etc. thanks
