diesel $1.30.9 in Port Elgin yesterday.
that beast of a van has been returning 25.7 mpg since i started using the cruise control at 90kph.

beats the hell out of the gassers even at cheaper fuel costs (regular gas $1.18.9)

uncles gassers have been returning 15 mpg... i might have to change my mind on selling the old beast.

Have read no complaints about these prices from Norwegians on this forum

I've been looking into some particulars for my holiday trip to Norway this summer.
Found out that diesel fuel over there is the most expensive in Europe: over 1.62 eurocent per liter or 9.74 USD/gallon.
Bummer......they have their own oil fields and are one of the bigger exporters of crude oil in Europe.

That supports my posting a few days ago where I stated that cruising at lower speeds (80-90 instead of 110-120) and driving at a steady speed is the best way to save fuel.....
Have you any numbers on lost time due to the lower max speed?

lost time? the speed limit here in most places is 80 kph but everyone drives 105 so 90 is quite easy to hold to.

in alberta the speed limit on most traveled roads is 100 - 110 so it is harder to sit back and relax BUT there the roads have less stop and go so there is a trade off.

the older i get the more i want to slow down... plus it gives the peeps a chance to see my rides 'ASS rules' (Attention Slut Syndrom)... when you have the olny lifted and locked rag top 70 in the province you want to show it off,,,

to work out the lost time 100 kph = roughly 60 mph which is a mile a minute so if you drop to 90 then you loose 10% which is 6 minutes and hour longer. a drive from calgary to edmonton is roughly 3 hours (center to center) if you drive 140 kph instead of 100 then you are 40% fasterthe drive will take 108 minutes instead of 189 min if you drive 90 instead of the 100 then the drive will take 198 min instead of 180 min but your fuel savings will go up accordingly. your rpm will be lower, your wind resistance will be less which makes a HUGE difference.

life is short, enjoy the scenery

What I'm interested in is your real average.
As I wrote in an earlier posting, dropping your topspeed from (let's do some easy calculations) 150 km/h to 100 km/h does not mean that your average will drop from 150 to 100 km/h.
In real life you have to halt (stopsign, wait for railwaycrossing) or slow down (speedlimits, slow traffic)
So your average when topping 150 km/h could be 90 km/h whereis topping 100 km/h could result in an average of 80 km/h. Covering a distance of 360 km's then would need 4 hrs (top 150) or 4.5 hrs (top 100 km/h) So over 360 km's you would effectively loose only 30 min !!!

There was a time I had to travel to work over a distance of about 300km's. I tried several times to find out the difference in time driving like mad or taking my time. I took my time after several attempts to save more then half an hour, which I failed.

I think this is fairly right as far as you are driving in Europe, but is that also where you live?

No Crusie Control on my Safari and my foot seems to be set for 110. Will have to see about getting my right foot recalibrated to 100. :D Diving from Abby to Pince George this morning, so I will have to give it a try. I think 90 would cause to many mad drives behind me doing 120. If we start to see fuel shortages, I think we can expect reduced speed limits in North America to conserve fuel.

actually the stretch of road in Alberta that i was talking about is a clear road with no stopping for at least 250 km, straight highwway...

now in Ontario that is a big difference since there is a small town every 15 min...

Nothing to correct here Tapage. You're dead on.:D

There is a dry US gallon as well but that's hardly used. In general, when talking about a USgallon it's the gallon equal to 3.78 liters.:)

I was missing the best part of the conversion .. now I catch .. EURvs USD .. :(

Anyone heard about Diesel reaching $2.50 a litre within the next couple of years? Scary Stuff, that I can start to believe ($1.44 per litre now)!

In any case I cannot see any other solution but for the government to lower fuel taxes and increase income tax for the rich, or there's going to be REAL trouble!

In the front page of the Journal de Montréal today: "ingenious thieves siphon fuel tanks"...

Bullfudge. The price of diesel will level off around $1.50 / liter and the price of gasoline will continue to climb.

If you're holding your breath expecting the govt to cut fuel taxes and increase the taxes on their rich supporters, then you will go blue in the face and pass out cold.

REAL trouble??? yeah right... people will complain about fuel prices just like they complain about the weather, but they won't DO sweet F**k All.

If people really want to lower their fuel cost then use public transit, car-pool, buy more fuel efficient vehicles, stop speeding, and don't waste fuel in grid lock bumper-to-bumper traffic. But, oh no, that would require some personal initiative, and it's a whole lot easier to blame someone else and expect the govt. to fix things.

LOL!!
are you ever correct!

one of the first thing i noticed when i moved here is how people drive, you would think gas is free... V8 gas full size trucks flying everywhere...

oh well, it isn't my money they are wasting.

and 83bj60... have you ever seen the government do anything good for the middle class?

Wayne, they are doing their part for the Ontario economy! Hell, no one else will buy the crap from Windsor or any of the other domestic auto manufacturers.

Try and sell a domestic V8 outside of Canada/USA. It won't be easy.

Public Transit? I must be dreaming! What, you'd want us to rely on good ole CN, which takes THREE WEEKS to cross the country? Yeah, Right! Keep your illusions to yourself, This is a big country with wide open spaces, without truckers this economy WILL stop in its tracks!

But then again, you'd rather we buy high priced local "crap" rather than the cheaper imported kind!!!

I know you are conflicted, but come on! Get out of the politically correct quagmire and think for yourself!

No, you are absolutely right on that one. But push people hard enough and you will see a revolt! It's just a matter of severity and a matter of time... Look at history, there have been many examples...

It's about time the scandal or road taxes was denounced as a way to keep the poor a the heel of the rich. And I'm not talking about those who make 100,000 a year, like the politically correct liberals would want us to believe are the rich (and have alwatys done, thank you Mr Martin), I'm talking about the growing filthy rich class of people who have so much that they don't know what to do with.

Blaming the problem on scarcity of fuel is sidestepping the deeper problem, which is the basic inequity WITHIN our society.

If the government doesn't do anything to correct that inequity, the middle class will dissolve and join the ranks of the poor and will do it for them.

OTOH, if you are filthy rich you may think it's high time 'we got rid of the poor' because the planet is overpopulated... Trouble is, there won't be anyone left to make you rich if you do that!

Bottom line, the fuel price surge is profitting the big oil companies and the governments, and hurts the average person and makes them poorer. Create more poor and you will get yoursef a heck of a serious crisis.

don't get personal with me you little s***, or you'll get the same right back at ya.

stick to the subject

Show one example in recent history in an affluent western country
