It looks like it’s in 80 series prison.

My later show is better.

It feels kinda like prison. It started snowing today, and that means the plows and salt are coming. It felt good to put it away and save it some salty wear and tear, but it also feels a shame since it does really well in the snow.

ARB Air Locker and QPM project resumed

It has been a few months of unfulfilling winter here in MN. Plenty of salty roads and coldish temps, but no snow. A coupe of weeks ago I unpacked the cruiser at the garage stall and parked it in my driveway in hopes of "quickly" wrapping up the remaining wiring on the ARB air lockers. However, it has been a slow process moving forward. Lots of questions and researching and I'm still mid project.

Currently I have been integrating the ARB switch harness (for the air compressor and locker solenoids) and the very clean and nifty Wit's End factory locker harness. I decided sending USD to Wits End would save me some time which is always the hardest commodity for me.

One problem that has emerged is that I cannot find everything I need to do the work. This is what happens when you move halfway across North America. Somewhere in my life is a 1993 EWD supplemental book that describes exactly what pin is what color for my dash illumination switches. I can't find this resource anywhere.

One good bit about shoving in my Wits End QPM and driving it 1700 miles is that it showed me where there is some rubbing on a factory wiring harness. I wrapped up the braided section with some new electrical tape and it got a short section of plastic split loom to guard against the QPM edge. I'm hoping to wrap this up in the next couple of weeks so that I can move on to other Cruiser projects and get it into a shop to have my AC system worked on.

Hey G, good seeing an update on here from you. Not that I can talk, @Broski

Don’t we have a EWD in the resources section you can download for freeeeeeeee?

How’s the house? Fam like it?

Found the EWD! Love my physical paper copy. I have found the electronic ones great in a pinch, but I have very much enjoyed using the paper FSM and EWD supplement.

House is nice. Fam likes it. Garage has no allies. Its days are numbered.

You actually got products from Witt's End recently? You must be about the only person.

A wiring harness no less, that clearly states due to shortages this may take a really long time to make—expect delays.

I’m still a happy Wits end customer.

The wiring harness has a couple of minor issues, which I’ll illustrate in a future post..

Yikes. That’s a bummer if you don’t have a QPM….

Man I just read this whole Wits end thread. What a s*** show. No longer comfortable being a fan boy. 😞

I'm still a huge fan of the products he designed... I just have to separate the business from the products in my mind.

That’s where I’m at. I’ve enjoyed my experience working with that company, but the horror stories about turbo orders…😱

Let’s say I’m going to hold off buying that head gasket poster until the dust settles.

Overheating Issue

Well, Just when I was getting ready to finish up some more electrical work I have some overheating issues emerging. Since I have owned this rig I have replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and most of the coolant hoses big and small. But one thing I haven't replaced is the fan clutch. I believe mine has finally failing. Anyhow I have a land tank one on the way , as well as an auxiliary temp gauge to install and some new Toyota red coolant.

Pics when the parts arrive and the work begins.

are you overheating in stop and go traffic? If so, that points to a faulty fan clutch if all other cooling parts in good order.

Other parts in good order. Original fan clutch (to my knowledge) and the temp rose very fast once I headed off the freeway and into the 20 mph side street for the 4 blocks to home.

When it is running is it running rough? Hopefully not a headgasket.

Good to see you are still hanging with it…. Thought maybe you fell over the rail.

We will see. I anticipate my truck will try to be like all the others and have a HG failure. At that point I’ll welcome the opportunity to rebuild that 1FZ-FE, but hopefully not right now. My options for working on it are limited due to my driveway garage configuration and the necessary yard project that require access to that area.

That being said I will plan on changing my oil, and my coolant. I will probably send samples off to blackstone to rule out HG failure.

Yep still here, but I’ve not been working on the rig, and thus not posting. Turns out moving half way across the continent is a real s*** show for a family. But we’re taking g care of each other. That has put cruiser projects down the triage list a bit, but I’m not done with this midlife crisis Land Cruiser project yet. I mean I finally have some cash to bathe it in and I have zero time to work on it. Life is funny.

I did do this:

I think this means there is hope for me….but full disclaimer this is just the switch wired to the dash lights. I haven’t connected up the locker solenoids or the compressor yet. I realized that there were a couple of wire run issues on the QPM and I need to pull the whole thing out. So it’s currently sitting on the work bench. The weather is finally not doing the 70 degrees then snowing the next day going here, so I’m looking forward to wrapping g up the endless air locker saga.

My air lockers were on an oem switch since 2014. While I’m building out this 96 to replace the 93 I killed last May, I’m going to wire up individual rocker switches instead of the oem dial switch. This way the front and rear can be controlled separate.

I’ll be curious to hear how you like the new setup once you get it out to some proving grounds.

For mine I debated OEM / switch pros/ separate switches. If I’m honest I chose the OEM dial switch because it has a such a positive feel to the switch. I really like how you push it down and turn it, but if it limits me more than once I’ll change it. Plus the switch pros is pretty expensive for switches. It might make sense someday, but currently I think I'm on the right track.
