Probably a blessing in disguise...Harbor Freight didn't have the ones I linked above so ordered a Proto version which should be delivered today. Should then be able to finish tear down and maybe get parts to the machine shop tomorrow.

What specific instructions should I give the machine shop? I'm knowledgeable enough to sound knowledgeable but also know that I'm not that knowledgeable :)
- check head for cracks
- check for flatness and mill accordingly
- full valve job - grind / replace seats as necessary
- replace valve stem seals (they prefer me to provide the seals based on a 2F head I had them do for my grey truck)
- check crank for wear and polish accordingly
- replace main and rod bearings (should I have them source them or get size(s) needed and provide them)
- check cam for wear and polish accordingly
- replace cam bearings (should I have them source them or get size(s) needed and provide them)
- Check block for flatness and mill accordingly
- hone cylinders and replace rings as needed ((should I have them source rings or get size(s) needed and provide them)

Balance the entire assembly? Wondering how much more this would add to the potential costs above?

Seriously though, are you bringing them individual components or the entire assembled short block + head? THoff I assume?

For the short block, request a full reman/rebuild, including cam bearings, mains, rods, rings, bore/hone as needed, skim the deck the smallest amount possible. They'll know what to do from there. For the head, have them do a full reman/rebuild as well. Include magnaflux and valve job, replacing guides and valves as necessary.

Skip balancing the rotating assembly. Motor doesn't make enough power, nor does it spin fast enough, for it to need more than factory balancing.


After dropping it off, prepare to wait a month or more.

Yes Thoff and will be individual components all marked and sorted appropriately. Head is still assembled minus rockers.

No worry on the wait...I've got lots of other stuff to keep me busy with in the meantime!
 
I would recommend having them assemble the bottom end after cleaning everything up.
 
Mic the main caps and find out if they’re competent to do an align bore. Not align hone, but bore.

My policy on parts is this: if you don’t go into a restaurant with your own eggs and ask the chef to cook them, don’t plan on taking your own parts to the machine shop. You need to negotiate the terms of engagement, and you need to remain flexible...and communicate.

Chances are after a very brief inquiry on their part, they will be happy for your assistance. F135 parts are scarce.

Thanks Mark. They typically are warm and in certain instances prefer me providing parts for the Toyota inline 6 engines. They appear to prefer doing the work vs searching for parts.

I'll do as you mentioned and report back. Also plan to give you a ring tomorrow with some other questions and see where we are with my list...which seems to just get longer!

I will take it. Lots of customers have donated tools to my crib over the years. My valve adjustment tool from @Spike Strip has a cool story.

Needed something to put back together after spending so much time taking things apart! Rebuilt the Saginaw 525 manual steering box that is part of the old school Downey steering conversion installed by a PO. I considered doing pwr steering but it's not clean cut on the f135. Also considered going back to the stock setup but figured I'd reuse what is currently installed. Should work fine with 31"s and there isn't the stock drag link or center arm to deal with.





Still need to pickup a 7/16-20 nut for the pitman arm depth bolt.

Alright! Found me a machine shop that is very excited to do whatever work may be needed on my f135. They also recently completed another f135 and are familiar with their differences / challenges. Professional, interested in doing the work, priced competitively and is confident of an impressive turnaround time (<1 month which is quicker then I even wanted)...can't ask for more! They are a decent distance from me (4 hours each way) but I'd drive even further if they were.

Dropped everything off yesterday and hope to hear back from them soon with details on head and block condition...I'm not anticipating issues based on what I saw during disassembly.

@65swb45 we can probably firm up my pile of parts and get you paid! I can ring you tomorrow at the shop.
