In process of cleaning the oil pan and find some surprises. Bearing pieces??? This was crude stuck to the pan bottom that loosened after soaking in my parts washer overnight.

Should I pull the bearing caps to inspect? The cylinder walls look great from below.

Looks like some metal casting to me.

First one I pulled (rear main)...looks like bearings are in my future :(

Another one of the main bearing caps...keeps getting better!

Jon

Check to see if they are standard or oversized. I may have something for you.

Your transmission overhaul kit should be in on Monday.

Super news on the transmission rebuild!!

I am going to pull the head and tear down the rest of the block during the evenings this week and drop off at the machine shop. Once I know what I need I'll let you know. Hoping the crank, cam and cylinders are all still within spec so I can do bearings and rings vs going all crazy money.

Likely going to need some valve stem seals and a head gasket too...might as well while I'm in there.

Here’s a little something to start the week off on the right foot:

Awesome!!

My pile is likely going to get larger after almost being finished tearing down the long block. Each one of the rocker studs was bent, not bad but still bent. I think I recall you posting a set of NOS ones a while back. Also, there were no main bearing bolt keepers, which I think there should be? Need all four. Also, should there be locator spacers on the F135 head/block like a 2F?

Overall, everything looks great minus the main bearings. So strange they look as horrible as they do. Still need to pull the rod bearings and Pistons then off to the machine shop.

Pics...

Pistons all look similar. Zero scoring.

Was not able to get the oil filler tube out so I'll just let the machine shop fight with it.

Also - how do I remove the staked screws on the timing backing plate?

Cam bearings don't look horrible but not great either.

If it’s any consolation when I rebuilt my f155 in 2005, the main bearings looked similar, maybe not quite that bad. Without doing any measuring or checking of specs, I did a shade tree rebuild, rings, bearings, and some head work, new seats, seals, mill work etc. and it’s going strong today with tons of abuse and serious lack of appropriate oil change intervals.

I fought with those for a long time. An impact driver did the trick if I remember. I have been eyeing this tool for awhile though. I have seen them work great!

I use a standard impact driver, with a dedicated oversized slot but that I bought for the purpose almost 30 years ago.

Sheesh. It’s things like that that remind me just how long I have been doing this.

That's what I'm missing is the oversized straight bit. All my impact bits are too thin/narrow.

Well, I have no recollection of where I bought it.
