Recently installed some LC headers and exhaust on my 88, 22RE. I have no previous header experience. They are extremely loud.

It sounds like a honda rice burner type thing. Is this normal??? I installed everything myself, so I'm questioning my competance. If normal is there anything I can do to quite them down. Header wrap maybe??

Thanks.

is the "loudness" coming from the tailpipe? if not, i would check the exhaust manifold and re-tourque everything. a leak may have developed after you heat cycled it a few times. if you have a leak they can be quite loud and annoying. also check the collector. make sure you use good new gaskets in both places.

if its still loud to you, then i dont know. if there are no exhaust leaks elsewhere down the exhaust system, then it should be rather quiet i would suppose. especially since you didnt change out the muffler.

but no, exhaust wrap will do nothing for loudness i would guess. they are primarily for heat shielding. could be wrong, but i just dont see it making a difference. actually i do not prefer exhaust wrap because most aftermarket headers are steel, which when covered in exahust wrap hold in condensation and moisture and then your brand new headers rust out prematurely. then they really sound loud. in my experience exhaust wrap only works well with ceramic headers. that way there is nothing to rust out.

I have an LC header, but I had my exhaust custom made, all 2-1/4" stainless with a magnaflow muffler. It's not that loud, unless I really wind up the engine past 4500 rpm or so. I think the muffler makes the most difference.

Easier exhaust flow equates to less restrictions that create backpressure and sound dampening, so yeah..

Check that everything's tight.

Add in a couple bends or kinks if running a new cat back setup (as I had to do to deaden some of the increased noise).

Invest in a $20 section of Dynamat and selectively install 2"x3" sections or 3"x3" squares on the firewall, floorboards, inner door panels, and rear cab wall.

Drive away happy.

We have the LC Engineering header and their stainless exhaust, muffler, and cat on our 85 4Runner. It's a lot louder than the stock manifold and exhaust but I don't consider it obnoxiously loud by any means. Like others have said, it probably has as much to do with your muffler as anything.

The LC stainless exhaust is all 2 1/4" and the muffler looks very similar to a magnaflow (and might be a magnaflow for all I know?).

I understand the exhaust is going to be sounding a little different, but thats not the sound I'm questioning. Its definetely from the headers / engine bay area. There are 2 bolt holes in the center with air coming out of them and I cannot get bolts into them. Bolts from LC will start in these holes, then they fell like they are getting cross threaded. Somebody told me it was "piston slap" and with the headers it was just more noticeable.

Do you have block off plates over the holes for the air injection tubes? It sounds like that may be the bolt hole in question. There are on top of the header flange on between the two studs on each side. There should be a delete plate over them.

Like others have said, exhaust leak someplace. How loud your truck is in the end should be dependent on the muffler. I run a Flowmaster 50 have no complaints.

I think an '88 will have an air injection rail on it. My '87 does not, so it has the block-off plates above the 4 pipes in the flange. There should also be two studs in the middle.

Mine does not have studs, just block off plates that cover the holes. I know that this was fixed, but I'm putting this out there for future reference.
