what r u guys running? i have to install some to make it leagal here in az and i was woundering what u thought? its a trail truck but it will be used as a daily driver.
lap belts arnt very safe in a roll over are they?

thanks mike

I only have lap belts in my cruiser. Several years back I was coming to an intersection with a green light to go. As I came to the intersection, a Honda Civic ran the light. I hit it dead on going about 40mph. Make a long story short, my laptop did stop me from flying forward.

And a side note - I like the comfort of looking outside and seeing what I am crawling over when offroading. With shoulder belts, I would not be able to do this.

Just my two cents.

Joel

I would go at LEAST 3 point.

4 point harness gives you the option of just lap belt for trail use.

I would not want just lap belts for a DD - my mom, and sister work in ER's, my old employer used to be coroner - he got to pick up the stiffs from accidents.

Don't short change yourself...

I run RCI 2" street belts....4-point, standard automotive belt clip, shoulders are sewn into the lap, BUT are very easily kept behind your back for the "casual" wheelin, then quickly accessible when it gets interesting.

Corbeau makes a very similar one. $70 each or so, quite comfortable...

Go shoulder straps. I put in a factory roll bar so that I could. It was a major priority item.

Hmm... does anyone have a picture of how they mounted the 4 point to the roll bar. I received a set from my wife a few Xmas's back (a hint). Never installed them for I did not want to drill holes in my roll cage???

I think the census here is at least a 3 point. Never rolled yet (knock on wood).

I guess it is time to re-evaluate my safety devices.

Thanks,
Joel

I like the 4 pointers. They are easy enough to slip off the shoulder for those
peeks at the trail but they are a MUST when that thing is rearing up with wheels
in the air or when it's "thinking" about rolling over. On the rougher trail sections
I like to scope...then cinch the belts for all they are worth.
Street driving is an even better reason to get some shoulder belts.
I shudder to think about hitting that big old steering wheel with my face.....
even if my face could use a touchup, I'd prefer it was by choice....not by
accident. ;-)

If you can, go with a shoulder belt at least. I only have lap belts in my 45 since there is no where to attach a shoulder belt...yet.

I've been thinking about this myself. Got lap belts put in after you told me about the clip rings yesterday :D . But how you would mount a shoulder belt in a 45 when the body isn't engineered for it: well, it might be more dangerous than nothing at all.

Brian,
I am considering those RCIs from Summit. Do you have a pic? I'm not sure how I'd anchor them.

Thanks
John

couple pics towards the end of this stuff.... http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/tbi350.php

mine are all custom mount on Corbeaus...I had them on stock seats for a very short time, used the stock mount bolts for the lap and a custom mount for the harness...would be long enuf to reach to the floor and use the stock body bolt too, but thats a POOR mount location for a shoulder harness.

hmmm...i don't really see where the harness mounts...are the shoulder's bolted behind on the rollbar, or on the floor behind you?

my harness mounts to the rollcage.....X-bar behind the seats...all custom cage tho, so not applicable to anything stock.

i currently have lap belts, but i was looking for a 3 point or 4 point harness belt, i have aftermarket bucket seats, im not really sure how i would hook these up?

any suggestions would be appreciated.

I didn't put half doors on my rig just to turn around and use a shoulder harness. I put half doors on so I could lean out for tire placement. When I tryed out a harness I hated it. If you are going to do simple "flops" as woody calls them (and he should know... jab, jab) then a lap will keep you in the vehicle. Just be sure you are smart enough to brace for impact and keep arms in. If you do dangerous mountain trails which could subject you to multiple rolls then the shoulder straps are a good idea. Now, if you're gonna be doin' "desert snap rolls" at freeway speeds, I would recomend a five point made of 4" wide strap.

I just have lap belts in my 1970, but it was better than the none it had, and i dont have the mounts to do a shoulder. if you go to a 4 or 5 pt harness you need to weld a cross bar between the rollbarup rights at aproximately shoulder hieght, or a little lower.

I run 5pts just because I know one day I'll get in a situation where I'm going to want them to hold me in....wait, already have :D . I wear just the lapbelts for mild stuff but put on the 5pts when I'm going to do something nuts. The simpson 5pts cost a little more then some brands but are very comfortable and most important...bling bling :flipoff2:
