One un-mentioned point...............

I don't do Rover parts...:flipoff2: :D

I think it was Eric V. that mentioned once he'd been looking at Discos. He said he'd gone to the dealership and noticed that under several of the NEW trucks, they were already leaking oil.

Here's a good test for you, call both dealerships and ask them the cost of a certain part or a certain type of service. That should give you a good indication . . .

Only the new Range Rovers have the BMW engine (and a few D90's built in SA have 2.8i's) - the Series II Discos (which is his year range) have the last iteration of the Buick 3.9L V8....New LR3's have a Ford V8.

I thought Disco Series II started in 99 and newer?

You guys remember that Discoweb thread around a year or so ago? You know, the one where they kept bagging on Cruisers, then guys from here would go over there & talk smack, then get booted off and their posts deleted, then a guy from there came over here and got all smacked around... oh crap maybe that was Pirate. Anyway, it was damn funny at the time... sorry for the hijack but really this thread was over a long time ago.

get a cruiser, Grouseman. you'll thank us later.

Yes we had us a pretty good go around a while back. Then some jerk (gee.. I can't remember who it was??) mentioned something about putting up curtains in the back windows so they could go pump their Disco buddies. Of course I don't think our VX Limited bretheren appreciated that one quite as much... :D, :flipoff2:.

Anyways, to some it up..., get an LC and have some beers, Disco's are for queers.

Grouseman:

I am an upland bird hunter. I have used FJ40 (too small), F250 diesel 4X4 (no big driving in town, too noisy, too smelly), Pord Explorer (too small), Ford Expedition (heavy and not very good off road), tried towing my Willys behind it to the 'last 10 miles - too big a PITA).

I bought an Toyota FJ60 (because of the carburated engine and manual transmission) - I can fit a two dog box in the back , all my gear, another hunter (or 3 more, if I unload the gear but keep the dofg box - try this act with a Discovery!!!), and I can run on ANY highway, road, gravel road, or dirt trail. Hell. I can run without a trail. I can pull a light trailer. The Cruiser has some issues, but it does not quit. This is the most important thing when hunting in remote areas.

I hunt in CA, OR, WA, ID, NV, AZ, NM... for chuklars and quail. The cruiser gets it done.

'Chukarman' - fellow bird hunter.

PS: There are lots of TLCs running with over 300,000 miles on them. Mine has 160K and the head has never been off it. Show me a Discovery with 300,000 miles...

I know somebody who has a LC and LR , he says the LC is a better built vehicle and actually selling the LR. If you are interested in the LR, PM me and I'll see if he hasn't sold it yet. The vehicle is in the Chicago area and the guy is in this board but I notice he hasn't had the time to answer your question. Problably on the road again.

I got a cousin who used to sell rovers. He went wheeling with me telling me that these rovers can climb trees if they want to. Well the only thing that rover climbed was my winch cause I spent almost the whole day pulling his ass out.

Is that you? My friend from the SSM Board? Yes I have been going back and forth on this issue for awhile now. The reliability of the Toyota is just too much to pass up. You see I have a 4-Runner right now with 319K miles on it. Not the original engine mind you but I just have any other problems with the truck.

Yep. I thought that might be you. I assume we're talking an 'Idaho' riig??

I will (have) testified to the durability and qualities of a Landcruiser. Put over 150K on my first one - and sold it for nearly what I paid for it new. Now working on my second. The TLC will give you the room that you need for those long trips, and carry you safely when you head down to Three Forks on the Owyhee...

Keep in touch.

I think you'll find quite a few examples of people that have owned LR and moved to LC, but VERY few that have gone the other way. In my mind, this is the best 'honest evaluation'. I spend ALL of my time wheeling with friends that own various LRs - they do well, but there are a lot of issues (+ space, etc).

Do the search for old posts, there is a lot of info on this.

Cheers, Hugh

I have owned both, well a RR actually. Now I have a FZJ80 and love it. I made up a spreadsheet citing the difference that came to mind for another friend. Email me and I'll sent it to you.

please post the summary of the points here - it helps to just point someone to the right post when this is asked again (in 6 months)

Cheers, Hugh
