Hey Mark (or anyone that might know about needle bearings),

Thanks for meeting me late on Thursday so I could pick up that PTO. Quick question- taking the PTO out of the box, all the needle bearings fell out. I count 36 when putting it back together, but that leaves some gaps. Do you know how many there are supposed to be and if there are supposed to be gaps? It spins fine with the gaps, but I'm just not sure if I am missing any. Can't find any documentation about this PTO that would clue me in.

Any insight appreciated and loved seeing your shop. Lots of history there, I bet.
It’s honestly been 30 years since I looked at that part, and I don’t remember. What I THINK I remember is as likely to be a product of imagination. There have been some assemblies that I have taken apart over the years that seemed to be ’short’ on needle bearings, and yet each time I have been reasonably confident that they had never been disassembled before. Therefore, it is likely that they came that way. Warn hubs are one of them.

I would think that your best bet for finding out what the factory considered the appropriate amount would be to find someone with access to the JDM microfiche. I have seen a few sellers in the classifieds section that seem likely to have that information. I don’t want to name names and put anyone on the spot though. Just how I roll.😉

Knowing your intended use, and the amount of torque you intend to apply to the unit, my gut says to acquire enough bearings to fill the entire circumference…minus one.

I know this pto was removed from the transfercase and the needle bearings put directly in a bag.
I have only seen one type of rear pto from Toyota and yours looks identical to mine.
I"m not sure if there is a difference internally between the rear 3spd and 4 spd transfercase pto.
If your bearings have gaps your likely missing some.
Wish I had more info
Bill

Your internet search skills are better than mine. I’ve been scouring the internet trying to find info on this particular part and the best I can do is this picture posted on another thread on this site. Would love to know where you found the info “in a couple minutes”. Not trying to troll- honestly just looking for a lead. I’ll keep my jealousy of your search skills to myself!
