Interesting. Thanks.

water pump seems fine actually. spins freely with no drag or sound. I'm not sure actually. timing belt was aftermarket.i found a small chunk of rubber in the bottom. not sure if that was from this belt or last one. belt doesn't look age cracked. maybe just poor quality aftermarket belt is the cause?

How do you tell it is aftermarket belt? Do you know the brand?

well heres my parts list. besides a serpentine belt which I'll get locally, do you see any obvious omissions? Are these the correct parts? part numbers i think are correct but I'm especially wondering about the crank seal. not sure it's the correct location (front or rear). also do i need an o ring for the upper housing? i see a bunch of grey sealer around that joint.

Genuine Toyota Fluid 00295-00103 Formed-in-Place Oil Pan Gasket sealer (This is OIL FIPG, not for coolant)
O-rings (small) for by-pass pipe to water pump and water inlet to water pump to (large) come with Aisin TKT-021 kit.

Wrong FIPG. You have the 103 oil FIPG listed. As stated above and in the links I suggested you read: You need the 1282B FIPG which is for coolant application. Do not use any 1282B FIPG on any gasket or O-ring. One exception is if you've pitting in block were water pump gasket seats pump to block. You can take a small amount of 1282B FIPG to fill pits, then scrape flush with a razor.
also do i need to drain oil to change crank seal?

fyi i also discovered old timing belt was a gates brand.
No, you don't need to drain oil. But not bad idea to change oil and filler after warm up and some run time, when seals have been replaced.

OEM belts rarely break on their own, unless supper old. A gates belt, who knows! If pump and both idlers bearings spin freely, next component to check is the tensioner. If all components are okay, then points to gates belt being junk.

When Toyota red is used it leaves a build-up crusty red/pink trial. I don't see signs of coolant leak on block or oil pump housing. There is a hole in back of water pump housing, that often has some dried coolant. That is a minor leak, not unusual. Did you find a coolant leak anywhere to explain your low level?

i only have a phone right for internet and having a hard time finding the link you suggested. it's not displayed in mobile view. is there an alternative parts store equivalent FIPG? Amazon wants to take a long time on items line the fipg and coolant.

i didn't really see a major leak. though the inside of the timing belt area was wet with dirty crud. didn't seem like an oil leak so maybe it was in fact leaking. i didn't see the build-up you mentioned. i guess green coolant doesn't do same thing.

i just changed the oil last week so not wanting to change again needlessly.
I'll check the tensioner. idler pulleys spun freely.
thanks everyone for their input. it is greatly appreciated.

Aisin has a small tube of coolant FIPG (I don't have a PN #), we think is same as Toyota 1282B. Some use stuff from parts store rated for coolant, I don't. I only use Toyota 1282B FIPG.

Remember to get water outlet torqued in, within 3 to 5 minutes of applying FIPG. Don't add coolant until FIPG cures. I let cure overnight. But I think official time is just ~30 minutes for curing.

I would not worry too much about FIPG at this point. I would use what you have now. That housing can re removed easily (2 bolts) if it leaks down the road.

+50 happy camper points to 2001 LC! Dude, you've got ALOT of knowledge to share and you dont mind sharing! Thats what i appreciates about you, Keep on Cruisin!

What's the evidence for when the timing belt was last done? Sticker or service record? Is there a sticker on the engine showing Gates?

previous owner told me when i bought it fwiw. it's only been changed once before by his mechanic... after timing belt broke on him. i bought it nonetheless because it ran well and is super extra clean all around. i wanted to see what the consensus was about valve damage here on mudso i didn't mention that earlier.

So there's no timing belt sticker on the engine at all? Maybe you'll be the first 4.7 with two non-interference timing belt failures.

I used to think Gates was a good name but I recently used a Gates/Amazon upper radiator hose, and it was so far off in length and shape that the engine cover wouldn't even go back on. They obviously took it from some other application and called it close enough, but it clearly wasn't.

Gates top radiator hose is cut to fit hose.

1 round of parts came in.

got all the old gasket off. most tedious part of job. didn't see 2001LC suggestion until afterwards about abrasive disks breaking ok to use. picture looks grimey but it's smooth to the touch. just stained. even used some 1000 grit sand paper to really smooth it.

do i use the FIPG here too? i need to start looking at the assembly procedures. parts won't all come in till Friday so I'll be doing this next weekend mostly. still need decide where to get proper FIPG.Amazon will take too long I'm afraid.
