Injection or good carburator???

I have $1500 in my entire 5.3 engine and fuel injection system.. It's not brand new, but 50k miles isn't exactly worn out.. ;)

Yes you suck.

More and more I dump money into my 2f the more and more I realize a v-8 would be so much better. But I'm trying to be brand loyal. Which is the main reason my stupid build is not in the hardcore section.:D

I picked up my DUI (brand name) HEI converted for a 2F and a complete Astrovan FI, harness, computer, and a pump among lots of other little bits for $800 a few years ago. Hands down the best thing - I had a JC rebuilt carb. and had all sorts of problems for years - what he does is fantastic but never worked for my wheeling style.

I am not advocating this vender - but think that either Downey or Manafre (or both) have good websites with 2F FI conversion stuff.

There was a guy on here a while back trying to convince us megasquirt was easier - still havn't seen the proof, but will await his write up.

I too want to go v8 now - I've done a complete rebuild almost as nice as what Marshall is doing (sans the colour) and while it runs 80 on 40's on I-95, has been proven to run unside down and realistically run sideways for long periods of time - great around water, bumps, better gas mileage etc. etc.

Man a Fre TBI kit has the amazing price of 2500 $!!! This is not for me...:frown:
Downey one seems to be some better: Downey Off-Road Fuel Injection
I just can't understand if in Poer Breather TB is all included or I have to add coil, module, plugs and all that stuff (althought it would be only a few dollars more expansive).

What do you think about that kit??? :bounce:

Downey has a nice kit. I will say they are a really good company to deal with and always willing to help with issues. The information they have on the install is really good.

That being said there is another company who a couple of members have that have turned out to work well. I went with parts from them as well as some from Downey.

Affordable Fuel Injection - Affordable Fuel Injection

Donno if Megasquirt is EASIER perse.. But it certianly is more adjustable and dynamic.

The standard TBI setups are static. They only have one mapping program. If you want to adjust things, you have to get the chip reburned.

TBI is awesome. It is just a more efficient carb system.

But it is not as cheap as rebuilding your carb.

Actually I can speak a little bit spanish too, but I feel better speaking english!
Anyway, your's a good idea, I just fear that they want only phone contacts...well, I'll try and see.

Fuel injection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love mine.

But I have a weber 32/36 for sale if you are interested. If interested in TBI search my tbi thread and pm me. I will show you the light.

Here I am again and I'm still not decided about what to do.

I took a look at Downey's store and I found a couple of intersting things, but I need you suggestions:

- what do you think about Holley 350 conversion? Here it is the link: Downey Off-Road Carburetion is the second item.

- I still have to understand what I need to buy from here: Downey Off-Road Fuel Injection
Obviously the Power Breathers Throttle Body will be necessary, but what else I need? Mass air sensor modification? Coil and ignitor module? Or something else I can't find in Downey's list?

One last thing, just to understand if I'm wasting my time: does anybody knows if Downey ship out of the US?

Some people mentioned going with a V-8. I picked up my 5.7L chevy TBI for $550 with everything. but then you need to add in all the conversion parts. If you want more power then it is worth it no doubt. If you want your rig to just run good and not worry on the trail then get the EFI/TBI kit!

$800 for Fuel injection is not that bad. From everything you have said it seems like the Downey kit is the way to go! Downey is great to work with. They helped me a lot over the phone when I did the conversion. I have seen many rigs on the trail stall out with carbs because of off-camber situations and altitude issues. Never had an issue with fuel injection. Mace is right TBI is awesome. Simple and easy! It is basically a fuel injected carb.

Good luck!

Thanks Chevota!
I'm afraid that EFI would be too complicated for me but seems that TBI is very easy to mount.
I PM Downey and I'm waiting for his response by now, you know I have the problem of my english and seems that they want only phone contacts...
Anyway, if I'll work out this little "comunication" problem I think I'll get the TBI, specially if Downey's kit is so simple to put on and includes all that I need to make it work.

Man-a-Fre TBI

I have tried all the above carbs and now TBI
I hated my original 75 FJ40 carb because I got it rebuilt and the person did not know how to rebuild it.
so I bought the webber 38/38 it is hard on fuel but runs great. ignore the marketing crap about not flooding out on hills. it does just great at being like any other carbs it floods out.
so I invested in a Man-A-fre all inclusive TBI kit. it was easy to install but not that easy. if you have a air rail for the smog pump it will burn up the wirring if your leave it in.
so you can do what i did, I rapped it with heat wrap passed emmissions and then removed it.
the problem is that it idles great and runs great on the hiway but it has major problems when rock crawling. it seems the program sent with teh unit comes from Turbo City and they have not tuned it correctly for the 2F and will not.
I have replaced every part of the TBI and it still does the same thing. wild fluctuactions of the temperature on the engine.
I have a fuled air ration gauge and it shows that the unit is running way too lean so it over temps.
I have contacted a chip tunner who specializes in 2F and he has a chip but I just cannot get him to send me one.
so I have given up on this and decided to go V8.
if anyone wants to buy my TBI it is for sale.
It includes the entire package all parts.
I also have a unique one of a kind intake that I was going to put on my Hipo 2f to go with the TBI when I swapped the motors.
the engine had the Man-a-fre pistons and RV cam. 1,000 miles on the motor and the intake is a special sent to 6 different companies in the early 80's. it is all aluminum and each runs is exactly the same lenght.
if you are interested email me for any of the above including the motor and all parts . I also have a DUI distrubutor and a weber 38/38.
