side topic: when you installed your slee bumper, did you have a hard time getting the 2 bolts in on the very back of the bumper near the hitch? On mine, the holes on the bumper aren't perfectly lined up with the threaded holes inside...so the angle is off and I cant get the bolts to even thread.

Looks like an awesome trip! Would've thought the Henry's would be holding more snow, guess I should be heading south instead of north...

Got the chance to go on an awesome trip put together by @Box Rocket. He took us all through southern Utah, from the San Rafael Swell to Bears Ears to Canyonlands. The group was mostly 80s, with a couple 200s and FJs. Christo Slee joined us in his 80 - it was fun to talk cruisers with him.

We had plenty of brake problems, broken swaybar and shock mounts, etc. in the group but the only problem I had was at 11K feet on this mountain pass -

Got the gas venting problem. Ate some of the paint unfortunately - but no fire! Everyone there said it happens with 80s as well. Better than a gas tank rupturing. Luckily I rarely drive to these types of altitudes.

I took all the tools I needed, prepared for a front diff failure, but the cruiser did great. Still getting an ARB though, just to be safe.

This slinky setup is seriously great. Took dirt roads at 40mph that I would have been doing 15-20 with OME. Nice travel in the rear as well. Just walked right up everything. ATRAC kicked in a few times, and I only got stuck twice on Elephant Hill. It had been raining and I was near the back of the line so things were pretty chewed up. In the dry or with lockers I would have cruised up easily, but I didn't want to risk breaking my front diff so I winched up.

Simply put:

JEALOUS.

Didn't have that problem. The only snag I ran into was that the bumper's frame mount felt just 1-2mm too narrow. So I had to do a little shaving on the mounting surfaces and jammed it on there. I'm guessing that it's hard to get every bumper lined up perfectly because every truck might be tweaked or built slightly out of tolerance. Could you just dremel out the hole a little for the bolts?

Apparently there's been a ton of melting over the last few weeks. There was still enough snow on one of the passes that we didn't want to risk driving over - too exposed and too slippery. But yeah, fun time in the Henrys. Didn't see a single other person there.

Winching up the last section of Elephant Hill. It was raining for a couple days and the trail had turned a little slippery. I think I could have made it with some more careful lines and some rock stacking, but Christo didn't want to work on a broken front diff on the trail - so he winched me up. ha

That's not something you hear everyday ...

"The man himself, Christo Slee, had to winch me up"

As always, thanks for sharing.

Spring is a great time to get out here in Utah -

This local trail includes a usually dry creek bed - but it's not dry this year

I love having a cruiser to get to places like this - didn't see a single other person out here. From where I parked, I took a six mile hike and found this spring. Never would have guessed you could find something like this in the desert.

The Hutchinsons have been awesome wheels. No leaking, no nuts coming loose. <10 psi + Icons is the smoothest thing you'll ever feel offroad. I'm starting to drive too fast on trails. ha.

Seems like 34s (285/75r17) is plenty of sidewall for a beadlock - however I'll be going with 315/70r17 next time just for a little extra clearance. I'm happy for now though.

Thank you for sharing these awesome pics!

I may have missed it, but did you have to do any fender mods (cut, roll, or pull) to fit those wheels and tires?

Just flattened the pinch weld. I didn't document it, but basically took off the wheel, removed the fender liner, hit it with a sledge hammer, then replaced and trimmed the fender liner. No rubbing at all up front, and I've hit the bumpstops several times.

The offset on the Hutchinsons is a perfect balance between appearance and performance, I think.

I have rubbed a little in the rear on big jumps/hits but I haven't looked into that yet. I was heavily loaded and need slightly heavier springs when I'm carrying 5-600 extra lbs.

If you're checking out 315s the BFG km3 will be available in about 2-3 weeks...

But I know you, st maxx for life!

Those do look very cool. I actually would go with STT Pro or Toyo MTs this next time. But I really need to chill out, I just bought these new tires in March haha

great shots as always.

Just thought of something...does your grille hit the winch control box when you open the hood?

Yeah it brushes by it. Not too big of a deal and if you want, you can push the grill back just a hair when opening or closing.

How's the Slinky setup so far? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm in the market for some new suspension (about to throw on f/r bumpers). I was originally looking at the Iron Man Foam Cell and Tough Dog TourFlex setups, but now these really caught my eye.
