@Peter P definitely more of a journey than I expected, but overall, I'm happy with the LJ.
I was talking Celsius, yes, but post turbo.
I definitely wasn't trying to criticize anyway, only saying that, Water Temp is only slightly directly proportional to rising EGTs when on a seriously long climb and if your cooling system is in great shape (and it sounds like it is) I'd save the money or put the purchase off until you needed it, that's all.

While you are replacing the head it would be a great time to put that pyro thermocouple in pre turbo.

Guys, I was wondering how high your EGTs are in general after all those modifications you have made?
To compare them I would be interested in the numbers on highway with 90 and 100 km/h.
Whats your recommended max EGT (which would still be doable for the cylinder head) and if when does your temp gauge start to climb up?

Mine are 625ish on 90 and close to 700 when driving 100km/h, don't drive faster normally.
I don't try to go over 800 when climbing up a hill.

Running 13 boost and water to air intercooler.

Are these numbers pre or post turbo? In my first Prado I was seeing similar numbers post turbo with some mild modifications (EGR and butterfly delete, 15psi). It wasn’t difficult to hit 900f or more on hills. In general 1250f is the recommended max for pre turbo, not sure what that would translate to post turbo.

My numbers are pre turbo.
I feel the theoretical max temp of 1250 isn't really doable if you don't want to swap your head very often, isn't it? when i hit the 800 my temp gauge starts to rise slowly. just wanted to check if thats what all of you experience.

Hmm... are you talking about 700 celsius? Pre-turbo? That's pretty hot!? I can keep EGTs below 1000f if I ease back when the going get's really tough (this can get sloooow though!). The cooling system (which I know is very clean) even with a newish radiator, high flow thermostat, water wetter, new water pump can't really handle those temps for long though. I have a test run I do with some suitable hills and before I serviced the fan and cooling system the water temp would hit 100oC. Now it hits 94oC on the same run but there will be times it will get pushed harder than this and I suspect I'll still hit temps up near 100. I didn't get a chance to find out before the head went though! This is all without much of a load and in cool weather too... hence my comment about the cooling system being under-engineered. I have found the cabin heaters give about another 5oC of cooling but I feel embarrassed for the poor old thing when I have to resort to that haha.

I've also had a 2.5 inch exhaust fitted and this really opened up the engine up around 3000rpm. Can't say what this did for EGTs as I didn't have the gauge in beforehand.

Then I removed the throttle plates and this improved the response a bit at low revs. Also reduced EGTs 30-40F.

The last improvement was fitting a good snorkel. This seemed to help the engine breather better again but for some reason has had only a negligible effect on EGTs.

I plan to fit a boost gauge, controller and am interested to try the Pradocruzer bleed value idea to see if I can create a bit more headroom

Bit more of a journey than I had anticipated!

What Snorkel did you fit? I'm looking to put one in my KZJ78.

What Snorkel did you fit? I'm looking to put one in my KZJ78.

It's a Safari snorkel I have fitted. The kit was for a 2.8 Surf which has a different airbox so I had to mess around with some stainless steel and intercooler piping to get the right sequence of curves. The Snorkel itself seems well made though and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the brand.

My truck is currently having its head replaced and turns out the fuel-pump/injectors are a bit knackered (throttle lag at low revs the obvious symptom) too so that is also being addressed. Will be interesting to see whether the refreshed pump and injectors help it run any cooler or generally improve power a bit. Anything that can help me recover from the trauma of the bill, I'll take with open arms.

Post-turbo EGTs for me are at 625-650f @ 100kms on the flat. Up hills will hit 1000f pretty easy. My temp gauges probably rises at about the same point (800ish I guess).

So can anyone post a link to a good snorkel for the LJ78. I'm learning more and more everyday, just so many variations of 70 series. Mine's a 1991

Is this pretty typical? Gonna do like you did and take apart entire intake system and clean. Also gonna install catch can. No real smoke to speak of and turbo sounds fine and appears to work as it should

Yes, that's typical. There's actually a little filter thing inside the valve cover too. It gets clogged up over time and then shoots even more oil into the intake. If you replace your valve cover gasket at some point, you should take apart the filter holder ( a few bolts and some silicone) and clean the filter. It helps a lot.

Mine looked exactly like that. (pic in my build thread in sig.) I replaced the turbo as I believed the seals were leaking and putting some of the oil into the tube. I had by that time done away with the catch can and just vented to the atmosphere, which helps keep
some of the oil out.

Excuse my ignorance lol. That doesnt affect turbo then?

Well the crank case ventilation breather on the valve cover feeds into the intake BEFORE the turbo compressor. So when the breather spits lots of oil mist, it ends up in the turbo as well as the intake pipe/manifold.

Hi, I live in New Zealand with a 91 surf with a 2lte with 310.000 ks on it. I was wondering would these mods be ok to do to it?
Hello from the US! I'm new to this platform, These rigs are pretty rare over here so im learning as I go. I wouldn't see why not. They are the same engine. I'm deleting my EGR as we speak

How many ks have you done? @Sd1975
Not many, have only had it a month. Done several mods so far though. It has 175k miles on it, so around 235km?
I've taken intake completely apart and cleaned all the carbon and sludge out, installed catch can, a couple hoses, installed egt probe and gauge, water wetter to coolant. Removed most of the exhaust, new rocker cover gasket, new clutch fan. Doing egr delete now. Will be replacing electronic hubs with manual ones and new shocks all the way around next week. Still need to go to waterless coolant and throw on a snorkel
