I love my 2016 8 speed tranny with TSB 0209-17

I have 2020 and I get the 1st to 2nd gear clunk or not so smooth gear change when rolling real slow and then stepping on the gas but not smashing it. The jerky clunk is rare but it’s not something I want to happen again. Would the TSB fix this?

Unclear. Toyota claims to have fixed the issue from the TSB for models beyond 2017. I haven't heard of anyone being able to get their transmission computer re-flashed since the firmware is supposedly up-to-date.

I've ordered a bi-directional diagnostic scanner that can do the same basic functionality as a Techstream. It can reset the engine/throttle learning, as well as the transmission memory. Will have some results on that progress soon.

I reset the learning values of the engine a couple weeks back and noticed a decent change. The worst offenses in 1-2 clunk were eliminated. We drove with a bit more alacrity for the first tens of miles after the reset. The pedal in normal mode feels like it used to in ETC PWR mode. Even my wife noticed the smoother shifting and acceleration.

I just did the transmission memory reset and the relearning driving patterns. In a test around the neighborhood, the hopeless transmission confusion is gone. It still shifts into first and there’s some flaring as throttle is applied. But it’s better. I wouldn’t say I love it by any stretch, and still is probably one of the less cooperative transmissions I’ve ever driven at low speed. But, it has moved out from the “tearing my hair out” zone. I hope it stays agreeable.

Just add a pedal commander and you will be all set.

TSB's are different than recalls.
Some dealerships will make you pay others do not. I had another TSB done free of charge at another establishment.

I paid $145 to have mine done.
No biggie.

I also paid to have it done out of warranty so they charged .75/hr to do it which is what the TSB says on it...
Vast improvement and well worth it
Hell yeah now get you a PC27 pedal commander to unleash the beast within!

Update: the transmission got back to its old ways a couple months after doing all the resets. Called Toyota Brand Relations and setup a ride-along test drive appointment with the dealership who to that point always rebuffed my requests. At the appointment, I let the service advisor know that I had scheduled a ride-along ahead of time, and they still didn't do a ride-along... But, the foreman and the tech were able to reproduce the issue, so they say. They said they updated the PCM, which was supposed to address the issue. No way to tell if they actually did an update or if they're just feeding me a line. Did a few laps around the parking lot and the worst of it was gone. We'll see if it sticks this time...

you have solved the problem yet?

does it go away on its own?
No idea, but I do the believe the transmission has a learning feature like many cars. I will try and replicate it when the roads are dry. I just detailed it the other day. :steer:

The transmission programming to downshift from 2 - 1 at 10mph never changes.

Does this help with the 1-2 shifts? Rolling stops are irritating.

yes, since day 1 off the lot
