I love my 2016 8 speed tranny with TSB 0209-17

I wonder if the TSB is a red herring if your vehicle wasn’t part of the TSB range but was still shifting poorly. Mine was made years after the TSB was released but has obviously bad shifting.

I was looking through the docs in the Toyota Information Service archive for the 200 and found a procedure for “reinitializing” the transmission to reset the timing and pressures and lockup ranges for the transmission. I wonder if the reinitialization is happening as part of the TSB procedure regardless of transmission software version update.

Waiting for our next oil change to find a dealer that will play ball on the transmission.

The real initialization procedure in my fsm is a very involved driving pattern sequence that is speed and time and stop sensitive. I doubt anyone has ever done it. Ive also never seen the oft referred to “learning” of the throttle and transmission that the vehicle supposedly does automatically.

Random question...but I'm assuming a Lexus dealership should be able to do this on a Toyota, right?? There's a Lexus dealership right by our house and I usually go there out of convenience for service.

I just traded in my 2011 for a 2016 with 4000 miles on it. I was pretty excited to find this 2016. The shifting from first to second is making me nuts. If I roll through an intersection at a low speed and step on the gas, the tranny seems confused to pick 1st or 2nd. From a dead stop if I ease into the gas, the shift from 1st to 2nd seems to feel like a couple of skips or bumps during the shift...hard to explain what if feels like. Sometimes its a subtle bump/skip feeling, sometimes it's very noticeable.

All the other 3 through 8 shifting is like butter up or down. it's this 1 to 2 that seems like a mess.
I had the T-SB-0209-17 Rev2 done at one dealer and I noticed no difference from 1 to 2. This dealer also said they noticed no problem.
I took it to another dealer to verify the update was done, which they said it was and they said they noticed no issues either.

I can use the ETC 2nd button and the LC shifts wonderfully. Avoiding 1st with the button brings me alot of relief.

I'm ready to scream or trade this in for something different.
Anyone have any suggestions?

My exact experience over the last 5 years with my 16. No change with TSB. Huniting between 1-2 mostly at start. Drives me nuts. I have found no good solution. More pronounced when towing which is rare.

Itis the only thing I dislike about it. OK and the fact that it doesn’t have an auto lift gate feature but that will be resolved by next week.

There is nothing around it. The truck shifts from 2 to 1 coasting below 10mph.

I think another factor may be some driveline clunk that exacerbates the "feeling" of the shift. Also if it just found the gear it wanted right away it would be better.... seems to be "searching" with the RPM's going up in neutral and then finally decides. exacerbated by my OCD!

8 speed is by far the clunkiest Aisin/Toyota truck transmission I’ve driven. Had 120k on a 4speed 99’ 100, 500k beweeen my V8 4Runner and 04’ 100 5 speeds, and 120k on my 14 LX 6 speed so I’ve been around the proverbial block.

The 2020s also has far more geartrain noise either from the transmission or updated front differential found in 16+ trucks.

My OCD is bad too.

Called my local dealership and asked them for this service, their response is that in order for them to see if it required a diagnosis need to be performed for 185$. If they determined it is needed then they will go ahead with this service also i may have to pay for it if Toyota does not cover it. :(. I think it is my fault for not asking or requesting the right service/questions. Any suggestions how should I approach them?

Find a new dealer. They sound worthless.

'06 120 series shifted amazingly, '18 4Runner is just as nice to drive as every other automatic transmission I've ever driven.

Our '21 200 is just a huge head scratcher. Banging around between 1-2 at low speeds while trying to be gentle.

Only remedy I've found is to drive like a bit of a jerk. When the wife isn't in the car and I brake & accelerate a little harder, it doesn't do the dim-witted 1-2 witch hunt. Dealer said it was shifting as designed. There's a consensus here that it's "as intended", but I still can't shake the feeling that some reset or update couldn't improve this thing. Others have said they love their 8 speed. I loath gears 1 & 2 but the other 6 are fine.

this is how i feel about my 2018 LC 8-speed. unfortunately, for us there is no reflash for 18-21. I feel as though there should be a reflash based on the 16-17 owners feedback 🤷‍♂️

I drove a 2017 LX570 and that didn't have any of the symptoms. I'm not sure if it was already fixed though. I may try to flush the trans fluid but i'm only at 40k miles.

Yes. Went to another dealership and they want $118 to flash. Their response: No longer covered under power train warranty :(. $118 is probably not a big deal but just the customer service at Toyotas sucks.

Is your shifting issue with 1<->2 at low speeds during gentle driving?

Agree about Toyota service. All of my experiences have been borderline hostile or just gaslighting.

It is not all the time or at least i don't notice it . I can feel the hard-shift during gentle driving when i am paying attention to it .

Exactly Just use the 2nd gear start button

I did my best to Boolean...but this is one of the only threads I can find on 'driving pattern.' Has anyone fully followed the FSM 'confirmation driving patterns' to the last detail? I'm trying to chase down codes/other Dx data via Techstream. The other day, I cleared DTCs in Techstream, pulled the negative terminal, pressed all kinds of things to discharge capacitators, and now I'm in a holding pattern until all the monitors reactivate. My plan is to do some 3AM adventures for open road, because that does not exist in Phoenix during waking hours. Also, ambient daytime temps are higher than the baseline temps indicated to initiate the monitors, and if Mr. T is so spergy and exacting about the driving patterns, I'm going to assume it's the same with the pattern baseline temps.

If anyone has run the patterns successfully, I'd be grateful to hear about it.

FWIW, I'm chasing down a super low (+/- 8MPG) issue, the details/background of which don't belong in this thread.

The pattern needs to be completed upwards of 14 times as well. Accelerate to 35, then slowly coast below 7mph to allow the trans to re-learn.

Worst. Roadtrip. Ever. Maybe I'll get a paper route to cover gas and kill two birds with one stone. Thank you for the tip, tho!

See the attached .pdf for instructions on how to run the transmission initialization. I take no responsibility for the outcome of the procedure or your sanity :D

Thank you, and of course. Much appreciated!
