I have wanted an FJ40 for over 20 years. My dad bought a rusty east coast FJ40 from a college kid who had the 4wd half engaged and through the transmission was shot for $800. Ever since I have wanted my own.

Today I drove home a 73 FJ40. PO is a great guy and we have been continuing to email back and forth. I definitely paid a whole lot more than $800. It made the drive from Redwood City to SF with no problems, took it on the freeway for half the ride at 60mph, and it did wonderful.

The rig is mechanically pretty much stock and has 138k miles on it, PO rebuild just about everything four years ago. Engine / transfer case, axels, brakes. New suspension. Everything works, barring a few things. Pulled the frame off, POR15d everything, then painted. Paint job looks like a home paint job, great at 10 feet, lots of runs etc close up. Its a truck so I am fine with that.

here is a pic I snapped earlier.

I am having a few electrical gremlins to work out, turn signals dont work, I am thinking its a grounding issue somewhere. Found out tonight when i put the high beams on it blows the fuse, so need to track that down too. Any guidance is appreciated.

It does not have a roll bar, so one of the first things I want to track down is an OEM roll bar.

I am also super interested in upgrading the suspension and would love suggestions. I would really like to put a lift on it, but its already just barely clearing the garage clearances in the city (you can in fact see the yellow bar behind the truck in the above picture), and while I have not checked yet, I am not sure it will even fit in my garage now. So I would like to hear what a good same-height suspension replacement may be. Not totally sure what exactly is in there now, will investigate when I have a little time.

I am hoping to find some time this weekend to run through everything, grease the right spots, check the valve clearances, etc. Investigate the electrical issues and the current suspension.

Excited to be part of this club.

Love the color mate nice rig

Congrats on your purchase, welcome to the club. Looks good. First thing you need to do is flip the bezel and all your electrical problems will probably go away... :D If that doesn't work, then you're probably right on your grounds. I had problems with my rear turn signals for a bit, but it was just because they weren't grounding good on the old rusty metal. You can run a separate ground wire from the lights down to the frame if you have to get by, but you'll want to eventually fix it right.

Congrats on your purchase, welcome to the club. Looks good. First thing you need to do is flip the bezel .

This~~and then you will be in "the club"...lol.nice looking rig!!! welcome !!!! and ENJOY!!! world of info an knowledge here!!!

Real nice looking truck. The first thing I did on my 71 FJ40 was remove all the fuses, cleaned all the contacts and cleaned the wires going to the fuse box. Fixed most of my electrical problems.

Congrats......
Tinkering with them is half the fun.

Welcome Newby. Good, you already have some issues to work on. If the PO had made everything perfect, what would be the fun in that? Get yourself a Factory Service Manual, even if it's a PDF download. Great source of info on how to do what needs doing.

By the way, your icon photo looks like a wanted poster - you sure you're not wanted up in Ukiah? :flipoff2: Congrats!

You own a 40, or an FJ40. Not an "FJ". That and the upside down bezel was my two first lessons learned on MUD.

Welcome to MUD! :flipoff2:

they didnt come with a roll bar in 73 do yourself a favor and get and after market roll bar .the only use i found for factory rollbars is making headers for our monster truck .and yes its not an fj at least not for the 40 + years ive owned them .

Sorry for the incorrect nomenclature, FJ40, noted.

I think all the lights already have ground wires run. Are there any good guides to how to track down shorts? I am very comfortable with anything mechanical, but electric has always been a bit illusive to me. Seems like the time to learn to do it correctly.

Are the valves on the F engine typically a bit loud? I have had vehicles with very loud valves in the past (My 72 BMW R60 motorcycle comes to mind, it sounds like a sewing machine).

Also is there a consensus on the best solution to adding power steering? I had not planned on it, but after driving around the city for a day I can see how beneficial it would be. Just turning the wheel away from the curb when parking on a hill is an exercise in creative approach planning. I definitely do not want to cut my frame, so from what I have read the FJ60 solution may be the best.

here are a few more pictures. I was going to grab some of the engine / underside / suspension but forgot in my rush to get to work. More to come.

Dude, that dash cover is really cute:p, but it's GOT TO GO.

welcome to the religion, hobby, addiction ... lol ... half the fun is tinkering with it and finding parts, but, the best thing is driving it even while you're undoing PO issues or doing maintenance that all 30+ yr old trucks need ... enjoy ...

The seats are like brand new, as is the dash, they both have TERRIBLE covers on them. Deciding what to do with both of em, enjoy em or protect them, probably the former.

Pretty nice rig! Love the color.:bounce::bounce2:

I wish you all the luck with electrical gremlins.
