I am wondering if 85 landcruiser gears will fit in a 77 landcruiser diff? found some 3.73's local out of an 85 and I've been looking for that ratio for the wifes fj. thanks.

That is a cruiser heads pet peave second only to the upside down bezel.

The bolt patten for the driveshaft will be different but can be re-drilled.

Hi all,

Yes, the 1985 gears will fit in a '77 diff. Even better (easier) the whole 1985 third member (differential) assembly will bolt up to the '77 axle tube.
As already mentioned, the drive shaft bolt patterns are different, but that can be dealt with either by fitting an aftermarket pinion flange with multiple bolt patterns, or re-drilling the 1985 pinion flange to match the '77 drive shaft.

Regards,

Alan

Well I got the gears. didn't get any flanges though. are they gonna be a different spline?
and whats the deal with calling it an fj? I know the new ones are fj cruisers, is that it?

To a 4* owner , the FJ Cruiser was an insult - it is not a Land Cruiser , whole different animal . The FJ Cruiser is a capable rig - don't get me wrong but it cannot hold a candle to a Land Cruiser of any series - Cruisers are built like a commercial truck instead of a wannabe ute .

Id be looking for complete 3rd members like previously mentioned. Itll make your life a lot easier and its fairly simple to swap them out.

Good luck with the fj....

Don't need 3rd members, I have the tools and knowhow to do gearswaps, just wanted to make sure they were the same, and wether the flanges were the same spline. guess I'll figure it out soon enough.

Pinion splines on the 85 will be fine. 77 will be coarse (unless a previous swap has been done)

So new flanges will be required.
