Good to know. I never thought of them being the same on other Toyota trucks.

Starting to think about the fabrication of the front cab mounts. The new mounts on the 79 are 3.15" wider and 3" further forward than the 80's mounts. So, the center of the new 79 body mount will be 8.5" off the side of the frame, 45.828" lets call it 46" forward from the center of the rear cab mount and 3.5" higher. The stock mounts will be cut off the frame and newly fabricated mounts welded on. I like the design of these mounts. My apologies to whomever I pirated them from.

So, who needs CAD when you have cardboard and a hot glue gun? I mocked up some mounts out of cardboard. I really need to remove the factory mount as it will be right in the way of the new mount to see how accurate these are, but I feel they are a good start.

Question, what thickness should these mounts be fabricated out of? I want them strong but not over thick and heavy.

More work on the front cab mounts. The stock mounts have been cut off the frame and the frame cleaned up.

More mocking up of the mounts themselves. The original mounts were too short and I had to add a half inch of length once I got the factory mount off and actually mounted my cardboard mount where it needed to be located. Now I have to go have some steel cut and some welding done.

And also put a seat in to see what will have to be done to make them work. the seats are out of an older, can't remember what year, Toyota Camry. The bases are pretty flat and they don't look like they will be that difficult to install. The only downside to these seats is that they don't fold forward and this may be a deal breaker on using these seats.

looking good, congrats.
those seats are an easy install.

the next build i do for myself i will be doing up the passenger seat the same as the troopy, i just love the way the seat folds for a table or for the dogs comfort ... mind you i don't have a passenger often, you might.

its like deja vu all over again....i remember doing all of this not that long ago.
I'm planning on using seats from an sr5 4runner. I've always found the sr5 seats to be pretty comfortable.
I have the seat tracks from a 75 and they bolt in the front I will just have to extent the track an inch or so in the back.

I would go with seats you can move...it's nice to be able to move them forward to get to all the junk you'll have stashed behind them.

I finally got some free time and I've made a bit of progress on my own build...will update my thread

I just got a quote today for a pair of body mounts to match the ones I mocked up out of cardboard. They will be 3/16" bent, plasma cut, braced, welded, etc... all complete steel and labor will be $275.00 for the pair. Seem reasonable?

good work costs money ...
yep reasonable.

forgot to check today for those straps, busy on the SS exhaust fab ... my bad.

I thought that was reasonable for professional work. I have no issues spending money on quality craftsmanship. And I like that it is a local fabrication shop with a Car guy as the owner. We talked about his 1969 Mustang Mach 1 and a 32 Ford coupe he is building. So often I have been to a shop and because I was only spending a couple of hundred dollars and not a couple of thousand I was met rather coldly.

I mounted up the passenger's fender and front grill support today just to see how much room I will have with the 1FZ-FE and the OEM radiator/fan. Well, bad news. The stock radiator will not work in the stock position, which I assumed, and it looks like I don't have enough room to move it back far enough to clear the grill support without the fan hitting the radiator.

Options???

I am thinking maybe removing the stock fan and vicious coupler and replacing it with an electric fan??? Crown Vic, Taurus, or Lincoln Mark VIII have all been used over on the 80's forum with mixed reviews. Not sure these are much thinner?

Custom radiator with stock fan?

I do have some room between the firewall and the back of the motor that would allow me to push the body forward about 3", but then the front tires would hit the lower front edge of the fenders. 36" tires have there drawback I guess.

The distance from the radiator to the fan pulley is 4" and to the alternator pulley is 5 1/2". Not a lot of room. The width of the OEM 80's radiator is 30 1/2". What is the width and mounting location of the OEM 79 radiator?

i am thinking you can cut the aluminum fixed fan spacer down enough to fit.
i have the conversion kits sitting here to go from clutch to fixed, a bit of machining and you "should" be golden...

Wayne, do you have a picture of the cut-down fan hub that you are talking about? Is a fixed fan a better option than some sort of low profile electric fan? I know the consensus on the 80's forum is that electric fans are not as good as the factory viscous fan with the Ford Lincoln Mark VIII fans probably being the best electric option. Though these fans are pretty thick themselves.

Any draw-backs with a fixed fan? Fuel economy not being an issue. I am looking for safe cooling.

If it matters I have eliminated the AC, the truck is in New England so I'm not looking at Southwest type of heat, the truck will not be wheeled hard or towing heavy loads.

i dislike and distrust electric fans.

the only real downside to a fixed fan is percieved noise at highway speeds....

One more problem you didn't figure out yet is that the stock radiator is too high and won't clearance the hood. You can't lower it b/c it sits on top of the cross member. I'm gonna have to use a different radiator but I'm not sure which one. I have plenty of room fore and aft wise though b/c I only have a four cyl. The stock 79 series radiator is too big also. If I find one that is a good fit I will let you know.

as far as the body mounts go. $275 seems a bit steep to me. Theres about $5 worth of steel and maybe two hrs of labor.
