Stretching the frame is WAY more work than just shortening the bed 13" I thought about going that route in the beginning of the build, but lengthening the 80's frame isn't easy and then I would need a new rear drive shaft, new brake lines, new fuel lines, different E brake cable, lengthen the rear wiring harness, etc... A lot of work...

And after seeing a shortened bed version that Proffitt's built I like the shorter bed look much better. I know we all have our own opinions, but the look of the 7.5 foot stock bed just looks too long for the truck.

This is a picture of a 79 with a shortened bed from Proffitt's.

What chassis is that 79 cab and bed on ,
6 wheel nuts, coil front, leaf back?

And they changed the back end from coil to leaf springs
There crazy

There are a lot of pictures of this build on Proffitt's site. Nice truck, but not sure why leaf springs in the rear. I like the idea of using the 80 series coils and hopefully will get a better ride than leaf springs, still have some decent load carrying capacity and good articulation.

I believe I saw them building that truck when I picked up my body. It was on a mine truck frame that they shortened. They are either using wheel spacers/converters or those are 80 axles. Hard to say from the pic...those are non usa 80 wheels though so I would guess 80 axles.

Not quite. It is a factory 79 series frame with 80 axles. We originally started with the 79 axles but the owner decided to go with locked 80 axles during the build. We had to modify the front coil buckets on the 80 axle to work under the 79 frame. The owner did not want to coil the rear, so he opted for a SOA. It came out pretty cool.

Since you have the factory 79 frame, Why did you shorten the bed and frame?

It does look super cool

In what way did you have to mod the coil buckets mate

Does anyone know what these two (one on each side) brackets are for under the cab of the 79 series?

That is what I was thinking, but wasn't sure. I wonder if I can use them to fabricate a mount and use the stock 80 series tank.

Another question. The interior on the 79 series that came from Proffitt's is tan and I will be changing it to grey. Where can I buy used or order new the door handle, door handle trim piece, window crank, door pull and door lock in grey?

Proffitt's can help with that. They have the Toyota connection for those parts.

no way the 80 tank will fit up there.

why not just paint the metal part of the dash tan...seems to be alot easier and cheaper than converting everything else to grey.

toyodiy.com is your best friend for those part #s if you choose to go down that road. If you have the part #'s it is much easier to order them from the dealer of your choice.

Australia my friend

interior parts

Your auto supply store should have vinyl interior paint. SEM makes some decent vinyl / plastic paint. If its prep'd well ie degreased and scuffed with a scotchbrite pad, it should stick pretty good.

Just got my 79 body across the border today. Can't wait to get to work. I'll be going grey too.

These are the small trim pieces I am talking about... I will be using the "paint" method to change some of the larger plastic pieces.

Today I started drilling out the spot welds in the head of the bed. Boy, this is really going to take some time and be a labor of love. Even with the spot weld cutter that I bought isn't going to make this an easy or quick process.

the door handles, window cranks, locks are all interechangable with other cruisers or truck/ 4runners. Have a look around the local boneyard or there are probably a million on ebay. Come to think of it I'm getting ready to part out a 60...beside the door pulls I have everything you need.
