I'm in for 5/6 - 5/8. Not sure who will be with me yet.

Sorry to hear you won't be with us Onur, have a great time out west.

I'd give it a 1 out of ten. Not much more challenging than an old forest service road. Stock 4x4 would fair fine. Mostly gravel with a few creek crossings and possibly a light pinstripe or two

Cub Scout Pinewood Derby just dropped in right on top of this.

I was like this, without the yellow trucks. This is actually the video I shot last time I was there, no lies. At least that's what I described to anyone who asked, and I was the hero of course.

Oh no. But hey Jim, do what most Charlotte boy scout dads do, drop it off at Joe Gibbs Racing with a blank check, and let the engineers and technicians build it for you. Its no joke, they do that, you should see what these kids bring and with a straight face tell the judge how they mastered the science of aerodynamics, all of physics, inorganic chemistry, and compressible fluid foil flow in one weekend.

Then come out and play with us!

Last year my boys had low mid pack cars, but that's ok. They were their cars. They came up with the designs and they did as much of the builds as (then) 6 year olds are capable of.
They were a bit bummed with their performance, but that has been its own lesson. Now they want to do more research on axle shaping, weight placement, etc.
The boys who won -whose cars were clearly pro jobs even to the other 6 year olds- have developed no such curiosity or drive. They know it'll be taken care of.
We lost at the Derby, but I think we won a battle towards developing better men.
Either way, as a den leader, I'm helping to run it, so this weekend is out.

You can use Lemons Racing type of judges on that event. One year we installed brand new racing suspension on a 944, painted it to look old and rusty, added oily crap and grease on the exterior.... It was a work of art. The judges saw through it and added 99 laps to our team:bang:

Parents would loose their mind if they got added seconds for "non-child inspired work", or the politically correct way of saying cheating.

On the other hand, Lemons Judges can be bribed with YuengLing and liquor. They have a chart on the judging table for acceptable bribes.

We are interested but can't commit 100 percent yet. Will know in a couple weeks if there is still room for us.

OK - so maybe I had a small stroke the other day, or maybe I was just suffering from a severe cranial-rectal inversion. The PWD is in MARCH not May.
I was part of the initial conversation for scheduling this event and yet somehow read the above dates as March:doh:
Head has been removed. I'm good for May.

In spite of the wife and I planning to attend after seeing last year's pictures... I have a conference in Connecticut that weekend...

That doesn't sound anywhere near as fun.

and I can't imagine there's anything (engine-wise anyway) that Boeing could possibly care about in Connecticut.

I don't disagree on either point :) SME contacted me to be their Keynote Speaker for a manufacturing conference. Certainly not as fun as STR, but at least it's not teaching Physics.

Glad to hear that you will be making it James. Sorry to hear that you will not Jeremy.

An option for Thursday evening is to drive up and camp at Cataloochee Group Campground, its 11 miles off I-40 and 26 miles to the Hurricane Creek junction.
