I have a 73 FJ40 and I want to mount a jerry can on the back of my truck. I can't use the spare tire rack, because I'm planning on getting a spare. And I don't want to damage the body to mount a jerrycan holder. What did you guys to do mount yours (if you have one)? And even if you don't, what do you think I should do? Thanks! :)

Maybe you can do something with the rear license holder:

A rear frame mounted swing out carrier with a basket is a nice way to go. Or folks can mount up two spare tire carriers and mod to mount can and license plate there.................. Will try and post up what I did recently.

Just put em in your back seat like in Mad Max.

Bumpers are your best bet without damaging the body. I think it would be cool to do some rear mounted ones that actually connect to the gas tank maybe with an electric valve of some sort. That way you can ride it all the way to E and wait till your passengers to tell you you're out of gas, then you can proceed to say "nah were good" and flip some switch that would drain the tanks and have your gas gauge go back up while your passengers sit there like :steer::cautious:.

@1911 fantastic pic!! Try and post up my setup later.

Aux tank under the tub.

I had picked up a second spare tire carrier and was planning on doing the dual swing out like in a few of pictures above, but didn't like the idea of hanging it off sheet metal or drilling into the tub. I also didn't want to have to open it every time i wanted to get into the back. A bumper mounted carrier would be a better solution, but it would still block access to the rear doors.

Someone made a drop down cage under the rear tub that held a couple of jerry cans, I think I saw it on this forum.

This is what I did, 68 spare carrier on my 76 40. Find a late 74 to early 76 plate style carrier to do the same to yours. This has worked great for over 15 years. :)

wow! Basically perfect, I already had the top holes drilled out when I bought it. Where can I get one of these?

For stage 2 you need
1. OEM Jerry can from J7 77110-60011

In eBay or here
OEM Toyota Jerry Can for Land Cruiser FJ40 FJ60 FZJ80 70 Series 100 Series

2. OEM Jerry can holder from J7 77130-60032
New from Toyota or in EBay

3. You need to fix the number plate holder + electric

4. If you want to mount it not on the door but on the spare wheel carrier - you need to find the opposite version (old version before 08.1976 or newer

with the tubes + lock and stay; the tube version has a jerry can carrier version from J45).
In eBay
