Hooray! More of that happiness later.

Waiting for motivation to tackle electrical problems I did something else again. Found a nos rear view mirror from ebay. This part is nla so it was a good find.
IMG20221012145909.jpg

From my own stash I found a nos cover for it.
IMG20221020122143.jpg

I've had this rubber for the mirror attached on a mirror for about 5 years. I have not touched it because many things that I touch will get lost. Now I had to grab it.
IMG20221018192638.jpg

Cleaned.
IMG20221018220027.jpg

Then I gathered all the handles. Drivers handle with small covers I bought new because they were too ruff. Handles were nasty.
IMG20221020121602.jpg

At the same time I washed other same color plastics.
IMG20221019120359.jpg

Washing did not so much for them. Neither for the handles.
IMG20221019145521.jpg

But paint helped a lot.

IMG20221020152905.jpg

Color match was quite good.
IMG20221020152917.jpg

Mounted the handles with inner lights and mirror. Sun visors were only washed and they were in good shape.

Light works.
IMG20221027170101.jpg

Bought this cover new. It is a 70-series part so the color was wrong.

Painted.

I was going to test the rear wiper but I noticed there were no connectors for the relay box. I thought I will find the reason for non working rear lights in this harness and took it out. Someone had cut the wiper/washer cables out. I thought that he might have done something else fiddly with the wiring.
IMG20221110203655.jpg

Took the connectors and wires from another harness.
IMG20221110215252.jpg

I also checked that every wire was ok. So this was not the reason for non working lights. I asked for my neighbor to help me with the electrical issues. He found some faults. The harness going from side to side in the rear was messed up. Some pins did not meet with the other connector. Colors were wrong and wires was in wrong place. Maybe this has something to do with different year models or I have messed them up when having the connector out. Non working front light had a broken wire. When I took the harness off the car I noticed that one cable was cut. Somehow I got to my head that the same wire was cut on both sides. I thought this had to do with extra lights the car had so original high beams was cut so it met the Finnish regulations back then. When I assembled the harness back to the car i removed a connector that had to do with the extra lights also. Not even then I realized that they were different wires. So this problem was only my stupidity. Then the wipers had loose nut on the lever behind the motor so it spun freely. After that was tightened wipers did still not work. Reason for that was that I have assembled the first arm of the linkage wrong way and it jammed into the firewall. So again own stupidity. Me and my neighbour tested rear lights with the cars original harness and it seemed to work better so I started working on that.

First soaking the connectors in brake cleaner.
IMG20221214184711.jpg

Then a wash.
IMG20221215160038.jpg

I have cut the ground from this harness to another so had to make a new ground point. Also put a new connector for the license plate light.
IMG20221218115318.jpg

Replaced these messed up wires with better ones from another harness.
IMG20221218115813.jpg

Changed the grommet.
IMG20221218122856.jpg

Made new wiring for tow hitch with original wires with right colors.
IMG20221218154443.jpg

And ready.
IMG20221218154451.jpg

For the front lights I took pieces of wire from parts body and soaked them in solvent to get rid of the oxidation.
IMG20221217000023.jpg

Then harness in the car and testing. When i put fog lights on reverse lights went on. Both has same color wires and I have put them in wrong places. Swapped them out and reverse lights did not light up and neither did the fog lights. Did some research and other one did not get any ground another one had a bad contact. Current disappeared when twisting on the wires. So off with the harness once again. Ground wire was broken at the connection point inside the harness so I fixed that. Also replaced a bit of positive wire for the other one. Now driver side fog light came on but not the other side. I tested it with side marker light and it worked. So the current got lost between the connector and bulb. I disassembled the fog light and found that there were a bad connection where I had lenghtened the wires. Soldered it back together and now they both work.
IMG20221219205720.jpg

Then off with battery mounts, front signal and light door. Replaced couple of headlight wires. I also took this cover tube from parts car because this did not have it.
IMG20221219200101.jpg

And now everything works also in the front.

IMG20221219201828.jpg

I am so happy now. And a bit dissapointed because almost everything that was wrong was my own dumbness. But now I can focus on Xmas and after the holidays I can start working with the interior. I am so happy.

Nice, nice, nice! Hyvää Joulua

thanks for sharing this build with us. your level of workmanship and attention to detail is at a level usually reserved for concourse competing Italian or German cars with seven figure price tags. incredible job!

vainiin, no haista vitua poika :flipoff2:
so according to your user name, i assume she instilled some suomen sisua into you. or you just a poseur:hmm::hillbilly:

Oh yes, she taught me much about "suomi sisua" and I feel very fortunate to have been able to experience such a lovely place as Finland. Even if all I have now is a worn out pair of Nokian Kontios, it was worth it . Kippis

Again time for the last update of the year.

With all the digital problems solved it was time to start with the interior.

Started earlier allready with gear sticks rubber boots. This is what I started with.
IMG20221012184614.jpg

IMG20221013175446.jpg

After wash I noticed that one had some damage.
IMG20221013113444.jpg

Sourced another one and them treatment for all.

IMG20221018175818.jpg

IMG20221014085911.jpg

IMG20221020112531.jpg

I removed small rust spots from metal frames and painted them.
IMG20221014152404.jpg

IMG20221018175952.jpg

Assembly. Put some new rivets to hold the rubbers together.
IMG20221019092815.jpg

IMG20221022180145.jpg

For the transmission cover I did nothing else than a wash.
IMG20221210145252.jpg

IMG20221210145259.jpg

IMG20221210154754.jpg

Then rubbers in their place.
IMG_20221230_181223.jpg

Then I washed the gear stick and noticed that the rubber was cracked. So ordered a new one.
IMG20221221141319.jpg

New seal and bushing.
IMG20221229171602.jpg

Stick.
IMG20221229171719.jpg

And the rest of the rubbers. Also mounted the new hand brake lever.
IMG20221229181613.jpg

Then the seat belts. I started to fiddle with them a year ago. I gathered together all the belts I had and started to figure them out. Seat belts that was on the car was very moldy but the chrome was in good shape so I used them. The front lock buttons was faded.
IMG_20220130_163556.jpg

But one set had them in brighter shape. The body they are from was stored in a shed for over 10 years away from the sun. But the cover was broken in passenger belt lock.
IMG_20220203_110754.jpg

IMG_20220203_110758.jpg

The one from the car had cover in good shape but the lid was broken.
IMG_20220203_110739.jpg

So...
IMG_20220203_111727.jpg

And as a result a lock with bright button. Now I have a full set of three for the front seats with bright buttons.
IMG_20220203_132535.jpg

IMG_20220203_132545.jpg

That was not the only problem with front seat belts. Locks for driver and middle passenger had rusted and ugly mounting points. I tried to dissassemble one but the risk for breaking the plastic cover was too big.
IMG_20220130_192229.jpg

I decided it has to be disassembled. So the rivet had to go.
IMG_20220206_134422.jpg

Turned some new ones.
IMG_20220202_165815.jpg

Testing with a press.
IMG_20220201_162358.jpg

Parts with new zinc.
IMG_20220215_154225.jpg

Powder coated parts for rear belts.
IMG_20220207_184609.jpg

For removing the mold from belts I decided to tackle with a full service. Took the best ones and sent them to a seat belt shop with spare parts.
IMG_20220217_212457.jpg

While waiting them to come back I cleaned the plastic parts. After couple of weeks I got them back and after opening the package I smiled for a while.

IMG20220325145047.jpg

IMG20220325145222.jpg

Color match was spot on. They were beautifull. Well worth to do. Also the mechanisms was serviced.
IMG20220325145131.jpg

Refurbished mounting points on.
