Help needed FJFJFJ / 1962 FJ40 44K ORIGINAL MILES

Old red, you mustn't have looked too hard. Barrett Jackson Palm Beach on April 4-6 sold a very nice 2+ (though no where near as nice as fjfjfj's, which I would rate a 1 or 1-from the pics) '69 for $39,600 and they listed their average selling price as $28,000.

As you know, high auction prices depend on at least two cashed-up blokes with strong desire, but cruisers are hot right now-especially clean, low mile, original ones with provenance. Having this back story, the original Colorado plates and pics throughout the resto - including detailed shots from before tear down...I'm not going to venture a dollar guess, but I think it has fantastic potential, I'll just say that.

In my opinion, Phoenix Barrett Jackson is the market for this to get a number of folks keen on it. I hate to see you sell it too, but having said that, I want to see you get top dollar for her.

As far as appreciation for older Cruisers, I think this recent '69 shows they can bring the big quid. A'64 is that much more unique, do we shall see.

I WISH I did NOT have to sell it. It's fun to stare it. lol.

Wow surprised your planning on selling it. Never seen one of these early cruisers be restored to this detail then sold. Usually more bang for your buck restoring and selling newer ones. Plus easier to find parts for the newer ones. I am curious what it sells for. It will help be decide what to do with my olds ones. How much I want to do to them before selling them. The couple I keep will plan on doing correct but some were mainly parts donors for the others.

GLWS.

Worth the effort.

Living in the Past is absolutely correct in my opinion. Newer cruisers bring more when sold then older one's, at least that has been my observation. I appreciate all of you guys here on MUD. You have no idea how much you have helped me over the past year regarding this 1962. You guys have kept me from making ez choices and that has made the difference. As I have mentioned a few times, T Binns has been a real inspiration as I have never quite seen any 1962 cruiser more detailed then his. M. Bradshaw's 62 also is just so nice looking, so detailed. The bottom line for me is I NEVER had any intention on restoring this cruiser. Firstly, I don't make a whole bunch of money nor am I a master mechanic so it has been a sacrifice and a real labor of love. Secondly, I have owned enough Land Cruisers to know that this 1962 was just a perfect candidate for a restore. It's condition was beyond great when it rolled up to my front door. It just never got used very much. Had it NOT been repainted back in the very early years, in fact in 1962, I would have never restored it, just would have kept it and driven it for awhile at least and then would have decided what to do with it. So,,,,,,,Yes, I have to sell it in order to pay myself and my bank account back so that I can do some other cruiser projects, small projects, hunting around for cool old cruisers with original paint. That is what I love to do. To tell you guys the truth, if I break even and then make a few bucks profit then I will be happy with this end result. The amazing thing is ( and a few of you guys can relate to this statement ) having a brand new 1962 FJ40 in my garage is just very cool. It's like a time capsule. It is just something that I end up staring at a few times a day. Kind of like it's out of place. And the fact that I have stuck to all stock and keep pushing towards all stock is ending up to be the coolest thing of all. Thanks for everyone's input. Very helpful. It should be done within the next few weeks. I keep going back and improving things, improving details, trying to get it as perfect as I can afford. lol.

I agree they do; having sold my US spec '83 fj40 I'm aware of what they are worth. However, classic fj40 models like the '69 mentioned above demonstrate that older ones can pull the money too. In general I agree. Specifically, I reckon yours has huge potential; I hope I'm right.

Chamba,,,,,,,,,,,,You have had ( still have ) a bunch of nice Land Cruisers man!!!

Thank you. I actually had my '83 for 16 years. I bought it from the original owner in 1989 while I was at the University of Colorado for $3,500. I sold my '76 FJ40, a mountain bike and some climbing equipment to buy it, but it was a dream come true for me: power steering, air con and very little rust. Broke my heart to sell her, but I moved to Australia and wasn't going to take her with me.

Sadly, the new owner tore her down for a frame off (she still had almost all original paint when I sold her in 2005 - though I had replaced every switch, light, rubber seal, weather strip and other soft items I could still get from Toyota) and lost interest, so now she is sitting in a million pieces in his garage.:crybaby:

I have to say though, my LX is by far my favourite Cruiser I've ever owned.

Yea, that LX is the coolest. Very nice. That is the one I want. I had an LX 85 Wagon BJ61, loved that thing but I want the one like yours.

Bj61? I've never heard of a bj61. Does that have the 13bt? I love the Sahara though! Is that in Ca?

Yes, Japan. I got it from a friend who brings in Japanese Diesels now and then. He is Japanese and brings in little farm trucks most of the time. It had a 3B 4 cylinder, great little engine, it did not have the jerry can on the back, PTO was stock though and worked perfect. Yes, high roof, rhd. Yes, it is in California.

A few more pics

Jack and Tools. Tried to get as close as possible to period correct. The map is an old original ESSO road map. Some of the freeways not done completely. Remember when you used to travel ( us old timers ) lol. You would check the map to see where the Interstate ended.

The old Tool Bag

Love these old tool bags. Also, not sure if all U.S. Toyota Dealerships where handing out ashtrays when you bought a Land Cruiser ( made in Japan written on the back ) but a Dealership in Carson City, Nevada was back in 1963.

A few more pics.

Battery came in today. Glad I listened to Mud and pushed ahead with period correct battery. Also, picked up these tin cups from Mr. Binns. Will restore and get them on within the next week. I should be pretty close to period correct after those go on. Here is where I got the battery. http://www.antiqueautobattery.com/index.html

Well, one more thing: I found this picture which is from Annies thread. The plug leads are unisolated here. I remember a similar image in our 62 owners manual which I do not have by hand at the moment.

Yes HD, your correct. This pic I posted below is of my engine. I will make the change and I am sure there will be other details now that I think about it. I will be glad when all the details are correct. Seems there is always something. lol

More Pics. Almost done. Working on details.

I got the new period correct battery in today. Working on the Tin Cups, just a few more days on those. Actually drove the cruiser today. Ran Great. Got the front doors almost done. They open, close and lock perfectly. The weatherstripping all in so real tight fit. Like new man!!! Here are some more quick pics I snapped this afternoon. Gotta get my side mirror painted and do some other touch up paint work. Am down to only a page of details. :)
