We are on our 6000 mile overloading trip. We are 4500 miles in, and stopped at a campground. This morning I started climbing a hill and the oil pressure gauge shows no oil pressure and the oil light came on a bit later. I have basic trail tools with me, but would like someone more experienced than me to take a look, rather than picking a random garage. Anyone know a place in the area? Help is appreciated!!

Kurt @ Cruiser Outfitters is about 65 miles south of you.

In the mean time I'd check:
oil filter - replace it, ideally with a Toyota one if available
add oil and have enough for a full oil change on hand
clean the engine bay area as good as possible and check for leaks

Good luck

Thanks, clown midget. I'm currently sitting alongside the road because I'm afraid to run it with no oil pressure and an oil light. I have 5 quarts of oil on hand. Dipstick reads full.

Any unusual noises when all of this happened?

It is very likely that the leads going to the oil pressure switch have worked loose. This happened to me and I panicked too. Also, the switch itself isn't the most reliable since I'm now on my third in 300k miles.

Is your engine pulley/harmonic balancer loose? The pulley at the end of the crankshaft needs to be properly torqued or the oil pump won't work properly.

Woodruff auto (801) 782-6294
is maybe 10 minutes south from your location on hwy 89. They have a decent reputation. The Toyota dealer is another 20 minutes south in Riverdale.

I actually have a pretty well equipped garage: tools, lift, etc... about ten miles from Willard. PM me if I can help

Good luck

Divinity Automotive is in Salt lake, they do pretty much cruisers exclusive, Angle or Ralph could help you out. Really knowledgeable guys and helpful.

Check your main harmonic balancer pulley to make sure it's tight (304 ft/lbs IIRC).

X2 on Crusier Outfitters. Kurt is one of a kind when it comes to cruisers.

If you start it up remove the oil filler cap and listen to see if your valves and timing chain are noisy. This may tell you it's the sensor and not the pump or clogged filter.

Just some thoughts.

Thanks to AtomicShawn for the help today. He left work, met me at my truck, took me to get a mechanical oil pressure gauge, helped me check out the truck, and offered up his garage with tools and his helping hand, if I need it. This forum is full of great people.

On another note, the truck has no oil pressure when under load...so if anyone knows of a 1FZ engine for sale, I'm very interested :)

Power steering still works fine. Changed the oil and filter, and the gauge dash now at least registers some oil pressure (to the 1/3 line). It's not as much as I would like to see, but at least it registers. Knock is still there, but not nearly as loud. I'm going to try and hunt down (borrow) a mechanical oil pressure gauge again tomorrow and see what it reads. I'm hoping it's not as bad as I believe. Being 3,000 miles from home and trying to rebuild or swap is not ideal :)

Knock is really a bad sign.
Please use the thickest oil you can find. Like 20W50, or maybe some kind of diesel rated synthetic. It's summer, thick should be okay.

Sounds like you had a rod bearing let loose from starving oil pressure. You should be able to nurse it another 3000 miles if you drive it slow and easy and don't overrev her. I don't know how long mine knocked, but I'd guess it was a long ass time... And I don't think they changed the oil or anything smart like that.

Save that filter! Cut it open and see if you can learn anything.

Just throwing this out there... I am in Idaho Falls and Have a 1FZE out of a 93' that is already stripped and could have it out in about 10 minutes, it had a bunch of miles on it but ran real good. IF you need it I'm sure we could work out a deal for pretty cheap to help you out?

^^^ This, did you check it?

Crank bolt's tight. Spun a rod.
