**HELP!!** 1997 80 in serious need of some engine help (possible swap or rebuild?!)

throw rocks at me now... sell the 80 for whatever you can get for it and get a 200k 100 series... with basic maint. it will go 400k and be far better on the road for your long commute. you will get a V8 factory installed, a great ride, and you can put 100k on it and sell it for what you paid... you can pick one up for 6k about what most here say you would spend rebuilding your under powered stock engine...

But that cost doesn't include all of the Tommy Bahama shirts and Speery docksiders you are required to purchase (and wear) when you own a 100. That alone is another $5k.

in my case it's whatever carpenter jeans that are on sale, gander mountain work boots, and whatever free t shirt and ball cap, toss in my german shepard that spends his days in my back seat guarding my tools in the back, and i'm good to go....

With the price of 100s falling below 80s in many cases they make great work trucks that you never get tried of...

btw the last 80 i sold went to a pretty preppy looking young guy, and the 80 i replaced with came from a corporate investment banker :)

Did you ever get this diagnosed and/or fixed?
My '94 did exactly the same thing today. Sudden loss of oil pressure, knocking above 2500 rpm, or hard acceleration. Now trying to decide what to do....

Well, I took it to my mechanic and for $130 he told my that he thought is was a rob bearing...other then that no. I plan on getting it compression tested then (if the top end tests good) tearing the bottom end apart and trying to do a bearing replacement...anyone have any thoughts?

First GUESS is that the previous owner had the crank seal/oil pump gasket replaced to fix leaks. The crank pulley bolt did not get torqued to the proper 306 ft# setting. If way too loose, it can allow the oil pump to slow down/stop pumping. Should be accompanied by lose of power assist on steering. Quick test is to re-torque that bolt and see if it moves much.

That wouldn't create the knocking noise though would it?

I had that same noise in the engine. Turned it off immediately and towed to my mechanic. I've only had the 80 for 500 miles or so. He said engine sounded fine when I had a power steering pump and starter put on when I first got it. $7204.67 later, I have a new rebuilt engine with a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty. It was $4100 for engine, $1200 for engine swap labor, all new hoses, belts, sensors, water pump, fluids, taxes, etc. I went from a $5000 FJ80 to a $12,200 FJ80. Now I have more money in it than the 1977 FJ40 and 2004 LX470.

Mechanic said something about cylinders 1, 3, and 4 and something about main bearing and low oil pressure. Oil and filter changed when I first got it. I just told him to fix whatever needed fixing, and put new OEM parts when he saw something that changing/replacing.

But hey, it's only money. Right?

Lack of proper oiling will lead to LOTS OF NEW NOISES! No way to predict which particular noise will manifest itself first/loudest.
