(I'm really clumsy posting from my phone.)

The above post shows a couple of nasty dings on the bottom of the 78 axle. Cause for concern?

I'm starting to think maybe I should use the original 69 housing and just swap the disc brake parts over to it. What say you Mudders?

I used the original housing from my 72 and put disc knuckles from an '81. The knuckle balls required some grinding to fit the larger birfs but relatively straightforward after that. I did change the driverside (if I remember correctly) inner axle from the 80 because they are different lengths. Your 69 had a different brake line setup than my 72, but by using the 72 housing, I didn't need to change anything with my line routing. If you are keeping the 3 speed, you won't have to change your drive shafts flange if you use your 69 housing and diff. Good Luck.

The later housing also has the brake hose tabs your early housing does not.

IMO, if you're going to lift the truck, leave the top pads on. If you're going to stay stock height, grind them off.

Best

I'm close to ready to start reassembly.

Above 4 pics of the balls show rust and pitting. I'm wondering if this looks okay to proceed with.

That line indicated by my finger is sort of a slight groove. Just wondering if that's cause for concern.

I had my project on hold for a bit. Snow, cold weather, the holidays, things sort of ganged up on me and prevented me from getting any '40 wrenching done.

Had a titling snafu, too. For three weeks the title was lost in the bowels of the US postal system until they figured out that I had not properly posted the envelope. They finally returned it to me!

Now I'm back at it.

Rolled it inside and started pulling some things apart. The body fit up needs some help, so I decided to make it a topless FJ40 for a while.

I also decided not to use the housing for the later axle I bought. The balls on the ends of the housing are not in great shape. I'm gonna put the later outer parts on the older housing. It's more work, but should be worth it.
