Well, that's one mystery solved for me. I been wondering why there's two nuts on the air cleaner. One above the carb and one above the filter element. Looked odd to me. Were those originally wing nuts?

More discussion on brakes. When I four-wheel-disced my 1970, I used a booster. But I always wondered how it would have been unboosted, like this:

The MP40 came to me with spokers on it. (Top Photo)

I'm liking these Series 12 Vintiques. (Bottom Photo) Does anyone know if 15x7's or 15x8's will fit an FJ40?

I make a slimmer version of that firewall adapter. I run a large bore, dual circuit non- boosted master on all my trucks. You can do the conversion now, and the disc changeover later, if you still want. Like LITP, my brakes are lock-up solid .

That carb has a cylinder/solenoid on it that is supposed to have a power lead over to the coil. I do not see it. And yes, it takes wingnuts. I actually have an NOS wingnut for the carb side if you're interested.

Run a vacuum check before you tune it up. Then tune it and recheck. then set the valves and recheck. Last: rebuild carb and recheck.

Best

@65swb45 - I like the idea of using a non-boosted, twin-circuit master cylinder on the MP40. So, I'll give it a try. Can I source the slim firewall adapter and MC from you? (I'd also like to buy that NOS wingnut you mention.)

Can you please put up a picture of that adapter/master combo?

If I understand you right, I can install this MC and run my drum brakes for now. Later, when I switch over to discs, this MC will work for that, too. Please make some recommendations for me: When I install this MC, do I need to plumb both front and rear with new 10mm lines? How do I adapt the drum brakes to these larger lines? Is there some kind of an adapter? Or do I plug one of the MC circuits for now and just use all of my single circuit plumbing for now, then change over when I go discs.

Spent some time with the MP40 today.

Pulled the spark plugs. Inspected em. They look decent. Put em back in.

Removed the two bent rear bumperettes and the steel angle hitch doohickey.

Sprayed PB all over the spring shackles and pins. Gonna be replacing bushings so the advance penetrant will help with that effort.

I need to get the old gasoline out of this thing and put in some new.

I was gonna run these drum brakes a while but I think I'm going straight to discs.

I think this cable clamp is too big for the battery post.

This clamp is kinda cracked.

I am in the mtns. Limited cell. Will ans tomorrow .

I made a few decisions.

How does the MP40 go? Not super well, but I think the problem is old gasoline. So gonna remove the old gasoline, remove the old fuel filters, and start again with fresh new gasoline. In the spring!

How does the MP40 stop? Noisily! I want to make sure she can STOP well before she GOES well. :)

So, the MP40 will not be on the road soon. I drove it around the other day, and the rear brakes locked up a few times. They also squeak like crazy at times. They do not inspire comfort. So, I am going with what I know; disc brakes! MP40 is going in the garage. She's getting a disc front axle (just purchased from @3_puppies), the @Poser rear axle treatment (about to order brackets and rotors), and an MC from @65swb45. With luck, she'll be ready to roll in a few months.

On Saturday, I'll get a few pics up here of the progress.

Yes. Got home late Friday night. Sure enjoyed the visit with you there at your home.

I'm likely gonna need more parts and will contact you.

Rigger's scratchpad:
Monte Carlo rear calipers - part numbers 18-4071, 18-4072
(Can't seem to find these for purchase that are already loaded with pads.)
Went to O'Reilly's - got all this at pretty danged good prices!

Rear rotors and brackets from Poser
Brake hoses also from Poser

Front rotors, calipers and pads OEM Toyota O'Reilly's

Also got Monroe shocks for all four corners - very budget-friendly

Nuts & Bolts Thread: Nuts and Bolts

Gonna use Marlin's inner axle seals - ordered them.

Will need some thread cleaners. Ordered a set of them.

Need a set of OEM lug nuts.

Alfred

I separate the front from the rear at the battery tray junction, right after the feed to the right front wheel. I modify the line from the single circuit master to go in the forward fitting on the dual, and run a line across the firewall from the rear fitting to the junction block on the passenger framerail where the ground strap attaches.

Congratulations on getting that truck, I forwarded that listing to several friends. Great body, great foundation.

Made a little progress today. Hauled the axle to the car wash. Sprayed most of the crud off it. Got it up on the bench and started the tear down.
