your the 2nd not I've heard to the ID-5100. Do you like the radio? Anything you don't like? Similar price range as the Yaesu FTM-400DR that i hear people are really liking.

I was a D-Star guy way back so the ID-5100 was a very good choice and it was easily modified for FRS and GMRS. Now that I'm on HF I don't really do D-Star anymore.

The radio has been good but the display faded I believe due to the heat. I use a sunscreen so its really never in direct sunlight for any period of time. ICOM wanted over $450 just for the head.. No thanks..

The FTM-400DR will go in the 200 when I mod it.

Cheers,.

John

Good to know. I’m in Phoenix so heat in s definitely an issue. FTM-400DR sounds like a winner. Another local club guy that also just passed his test bought this one after he did a ton of research

I don't plan to sell my 200 anytime soon but I think as soon as you start drilling holes in the dash or center console you instantly limit your buying audience if you ever do sell. I stole this idea from a friend so I can't take credit for it but glad I did. It worked out very well in my Tundra. I'll probably have the radio mounted in my 200 by June. Other projects have taken priority. As I mentioned I basically did it free. This go around I'll probably spend a little money to make it exactly how I want it.
I would love to see pics of the radio install in the 200. Thank you.

Here's mine. the faceplate is at the base of the A pillar, the mic is on the right hand side of the steering wheel. the brain is in the back attached to the TrekBoxx.

Nice! Looks great! Where did you mount the actual radio? How did you mount the faceplate?
What year is your LC ? What rear bumper do you use?

Here's my Chinese Anytone dual band I got for about a hundred bucks. It's been fine for me so far. I bought the stainless steel mesh on ebay for a few dollars.

I was just going to chime in that if you want to stay w/Kenwood, they have 2 vhf/uhf models with detachable face plates. Mendocino above has posted pics of one.

I know it looks crazy, but it works well for me for things I do- I roll with 5 mobiles 3 Commerical Motorolas VHF, UHF & 800, Yaesu FTM-400 & a Iridium in a Beam dock. The Iridium beam dock is Bluetooth and works hands free via the infotainment. I have four Antennas mounted through the roof and two more mount on the rear rack. To support incident management the rig is equipped with the ability to cross band the commercials radios and the iridium to support interoperability- Geek at heart, Nerd by trade.

What’s the round doodad strapped to your steering wheel?

2016077

It is a thumb Control for my Navdy, which is a heads up display- The company is now defunct but the unit still works and interacts well with my iPhone and iPad. I use it for primary controlling music and to complement waze when I am navigating new to me metro areas.

That looks like a meme

Those of you that remote mounted the T/R unit in the rear with the face up front, what did you do about the speaker? The only reasonable place I can find to put one is on the front lower part of the driver's seat. Not much to mount there there, just flimsy plastic.

I ran the speaker cable along the back of the drawers, and hook and looped the speaker in the little cavity below the third row cupholders on the driver side. It's nice and secure, out of the way and volume isn't an issue even at 75mph with the back stuffed to the ceiling.

I took a couple of old police radio speakers I had and mounted them under the passenger foot trim piece below glovebox.

Here’s what I did yesterday (not quite done).
-After finally getting ahold of a longer faceplate cable (has a weird-sized jack...narrower than even an old phone jack), I’m mounting the main unit under the screwed-down piece that’s just in front of the side fit-kit storage on my ARB drawers. It takes only like 15 seconds to loosen the 4 hex screws for occasional (almost never needed) access, and it’s a space nearly useless otherwise.

One nice thing about this spot is that air is continually being moved past it as air is pulled out of the cabin via the out/recirc vents located within the side spaces. These radios can get pretty warm.

Too funny... that's EXACTLY where I put mine, TODAY. Mine is an older Yaesu FT8800R. Where did you put your antenna? On the swingout? I went with the Diamond clip-on mount on the hatch, I think it was @Romer that posted it.
