Be too much brown for the shorty?

With this whole manual swap impending, I'm kinda thinking of sprucing the ole girl up a little.
I love my SCS wheels! Just be aware that those wheels (like my SR8s) will need to have the small lip that holds the center cap machined or sanded off. I did mine with a small sanding drum on a drill and it took me about 1.5 hrs to do all 5 of my wheels. That lip is about 1/8" so not a big deal but does not fit over the cruiser hub.

Thanks for that. I was literally about to post in your build thread about that very thing.

Also, I have been looking at the specs on the Autocraft Slinky set ups and you did the 75mm Heavy and you noted that you went down about 2", do you know what your height above stock ended up at. I seem to remember seeing that you were somewhere just over 32" from bottom of wheel to fender. I am curious because I am trying to figure out how the caster situation ends up. I seem to recall you already had a set of plates to correct for your higher lift and was curious if with the decrease if you had noticed any adverse effects due to too much caster. Autocraft suggests needing about 4* to correct and I was thinking the plates gave closer to 7*. I was just curious if you had had it checked to see where you landed after the new springs with the plates.

Thanks

I'll have to look back at my measurements, but the 2" of ride height that I lost was mostly from the 2" spacers I was running. The slinkys netted about 3.5" of lift. Perfect for 35's, also good for 37's with a little more bumpstop.

I have the Slee caster plates, had them before the Slinkys and still using them. Seem to be working great and Darren from Autocraft said they work fine with his kit. I think I'm about 4* of caster but I'll look back at my last alignment to verify.

Just got off the phone with Bryce @cruiseroutfit and have a set of Hubs ordered for the front end. Also finalizing my parts from Georg @ Valley Hybrids. Looking like I will have a whole lot of parts sitting around in a week or 2 so I guess I need to get a spot cleaned out in the barn so I can start putting this plan into action.

Well I am waiting on a quote from fastenal for the FF rear I have lines up. Not sure how soon the swap will happen, but I will have it and it will find its way under the truck at some point.

I need to update the first post with the current status and all that junk, but because this thing has been on my mind all day I feel the need to put it all down.

So today (12/19/16) here is where I am.

  • 1992 FJ80, 160k mile 3FE
  • Getting a manual conversion with 3F bellhousing, H42/splitcase, flywheel, etc. All coming from @orangefj45 and @Valley Hybrids
  • Got full Terrain Tamer front axle kit from @beno
  • Gonna slap on some TT FZJ rotors and pads from Georg as well along with some new Calipers care of NAPA for round out the "big brake mod" for the early trucks.
  • Got a set of 8x hubs from Cruiser Outfitters to keep things moving freely up front.
  • New clutch, master and slave from Mr. Onur as well as any other misc items needed.
  • Will be swapping the stock height replacement coils with the heavies that came off the 91 and keep the spacers to get the front up a little higher. Then clean up and swap in the arms with OME yellow bushings on it to see where the caster ends up.
  • Rear will be adjusted to match for a levelish stance. I have an ironman adjustable rear panhard that I got a couple years ago that I will throw on there.
  • I still have to find an early DS flare to clean up and paint.
  • Have hood and fenders repainted and the other dings cleaned up.
  • I'm gonna wait and see how well I did with my withholdings from Uncle Sam this year and then hopefully see about getting some SCS Stealth 6 wheels in that Dark bronze flavor.
  • I'm really liking the Mickey Thompson MTZ, so will probably be doing a set of 315s on those SCS wheels.
  • Inside, new foam for the drivers seat, fix the broken window master switch trim, install a radio and some new door speakers.
  • Got all the stuff to do a full tune-up and I also have an EGR block-off plate to do a desmog on it.
  • Finish wiring the winch in the ARB and ditch the led bar for a pair of those big round ARB style led round lights.
Longterm
  • Swap in that FF
  • Look into a Prinsu rack
  • I've been looking at the Autocraft 75mm stage 1 setup and would eventually like to get into something like that.
I think that's about the gist of it for now. I have most everything already lined up or sitting somewhere around here. The wheels and tires are about the only big piece that is still seeking proper financing approval, and I'm hoping I can at least get authorization for the wheels in the next few weeks.

Good times.

Er'body stay calm. I'm still going to have a ridiculously unnecessary amount of leds up front, just in a circle instead of a rectangle.

I think these should be sufficient.

Well according to Fastenal my trans parts are going to be about 3-4 weeks out, stupid snow in the mtns... Its ok as I'm not in a big hurry, will give me some time to get a spot cleaned out in the barn, maybe even get a little heat in there. The FF is going to Fastenal on Friday, so it will probably be a week or 2 before it gets here too. I got shipping notification from Cruiser Outfitters that my hubs are on the way as well.

I am looking for a mid 80s 60 series crossmember to modify and I will need to get with Onur for a clutch, master, slave, and some misc gaskets and seals to put it all together.

I'm looking forward to getting this truck where we can enjoy it. Was looking back and we have had it for about 18 months and it has seen very few miles since the drive home from Kentucky.

Big box headed my way...

Got these sexy little numbers in this morning from @cruiseroutfit I just wish I had asked Bryce to send me a sticker for the back window.

I picked up a replacement switch trim, but when I got it home I realized that the difference in oak and brown is just enough to annoy me, so I am working on a deal for a brown one. I will keep the oak one as a spare and I'm going to try to repair the old one.

Also, if any of you 80 guys are looking for a master switch, I have it on pretty good authority that an 89-94 Camry switch is the same part number. I got one headed this way that I got off eBay. If it works as I hope it will then I may pick up another one as a spare. $25 for a Camry switch vs. $250+ for new oem. And the guys on here asking close to $100 for a good working one from a cruiser. Same part number is good enough for me. I will report back on for and function next week when it gets here.

I am working on finding a DS flare, so with those pieces, I think I will have all the damaged or missing parts replaced and will be ready to start getting things rolling.

Random.

I got my proper brown trim piece and my Camry switch in today for the rig. I didn't get a chance to test it out tonight when I got home, but I will give it a go in the next few days.

I posted up on one of the ruff-stuff threads about a light mounting tab for the ARB Intensity style lights. The ARB for the 80 series will not accomodate the large 9" lights without relocating the tabs to the front of the main bar. I'm looking at picking up a set of the knock-offs to put on the front of the truck so I will have to weld on some new tabs. I found a set I think would work, but shipping for the 2 was going to be more than the tabs themselves so I pulled the rip cord on those and hit up RS to see if they might have, or might be interested in making something to suit the need.

I also started looking for places to mount a set of tweeters from a component set I have lying around. I was hoping I could get them in the sail panel. That would work on the passenger side, but the driver's side is to close to the dash and no room. Thinking either in the raised section right at the top or somewhere near the actual woofer. Still working on that.

Nothing major, but little bits here and there keeps me headed in the right direction.

That poor ole Sami. I think it needs to come to my house.

I actually fired up the Sami and cruised around the farm on monday while working in the barn. I need to take the tank and have it filled cause I know it is bound to be close to empty.
