Yeah...that's why I asked. It's not outside of the realm of possibility.

It's been a while since I've stepped in a pile of Mud-sarcasm. I guess I was overdue, and woke up on the gullible side of the bed this morning.

...whoosh....

;)

In all seriousness though, exhaust mods can improve MPG - especially with mid-90's cars where MPG wasn't a big concern. Making a high-flow and super quiet exhaust is expensive. Making a quiet one is not. Many OEMs chose to go quiet and sacrifice a small hit in power and MPG. These days, I'm not sure that still applies.

I arrived home late yesterday from our trip to find my Walker Dynomax Super Turbo muffler #17748 sitting at the front door:clap:

The exhaust shop quoted me ~$200 to do the work but was not all in with using the factory mounts so I did it myself for $51 the cost of the muffler. I also made and bent the hangers to work with the factory rubber mounts:flipoff2: I felt the exhaust shop price is fair I just like doing my own work.:meh:

The old muffler was huge by comparison in both size and weight. The old factory muffler was 24x12x8 and 32lbs. The new Walker is 20x10x4.5 and 12 lbs. I was after less weight (20lbs), more clearance, and a little more tone under acceleration and NO drone at highway speeds because this is our vehicle for travel. I scored 100% on the outcome and 100% with wife approval rating. At start up its hard to tell I did anything but throttle it and we now have a V8.:D You do get slightly more tone under normal acceleration and more under full acceleration but hard to tell anything changed at cruising speed. When getting the wifes opinion the response was you did all that so you could hear the motor under full throttle:rolleyes: glad you are happy.:moon:

For a clean install I used all factory hangers and everything still bolts together just like the OEM set up. Now the muffler is above the frame where as before it hung down before.

I figure with the weight saving, better air flow I should see around 15 more HP and 3 MPG.:flipoff2:

When you say you made and bent the hangars to work with factory mounts can you please explain a bit more or include some photos.

Maybe if I crawled under our 100 it would make more sense but we are currently cruising on 20W through Georgia (if my wife knew I was surfing mud from the passenger seat she might throw me under there;)

We'll need a new muffler soon and I'm interested in your setup for the clearance you gained. Thanks.

From the factory rubber hanger (see pic) the 3/8" rod that goes down to the muffler.

It would be easier to buy the replacement assembly as noted in the first post above than welding in a muffler and fab'n the hangers as I did if you just need a replacement.

Thanks @LandCruiserPhil

My original muffler was splitting at the seams, so I had a 24" magnaflow installed yesterday, but left the rear resonator on for now. Pretty similar results to what @LandCruiserPhil described. Mellow V8 rumble at startup, a tad more noticeable interior sound in low to midrange throttle-1000-1800 rpm no drone there, but I still need to test 65-80mph.

I would like to see some clean examples of tail pipe mods after removing the resonator if anyone has pics.

@92LXAZ has your exact set up using a 24" an 18" Magnaflow on his 06 and it does sound good but it was more sound than I wanted. At start up its hard to hear a difference with my set up even with the resonator removed and much quieter under acceleration and no to very little change at cruise with the windows up.

My resonator bypass done prior to my muffler install. I just welded in a piece of pipe in place of the resonator and refab'd the hangers as I did with the new muffler. The new hanger can be seen it you look hard at the second pic near where the new pipe and old tip meet.

@LandCruiserPhil Not trying to thread jack of course...mine is actually the 18" which would explain the more pronounced tone. It's not for everyone.

@abuck99 Here's a pic of mine. Had Mesa Muffler do it, I don't have Phil skills.

Need one for my 98, plan to remove resonator as well, should I expect same results? Thanks!

I pull a steep 1+ mile grade (7-8%) when pulling our boat away from the lake that requires 4400rpms in 2nd gear to get up the hill. Yesterday pulling the same grade seemed to go a little easier with the new exhaust. No hard data just based on previous trips and the butt meter. The exhaust does become more noticeable under hard engine braking but not bad just now noticeable. All in all its not much more noise than stock and a win for my needs and still holding the wife approved rating.

Feedback on the 24" MF is no drone at HWY speeds- this is with the factory resonator still attached. I'd like to experiment with a 4" round straight through resonator/muffler in place of the factory can, guess I'll wait till I kill it on some obstical before replacing it.

As of now it's only slightly louder than stock, bit of a deeper tone but still not as loud as my 2014 Ram Hemi that comes with factory duals.

One week into my 24" MF muffler install, I couldn't leave well enough alone, so I deleted the resonator and added a straight pipe to the bumper as others had shown ( thanks again for the pics). I should have left it alone because it was pretty acceptable, but I was thinking of departure clearance so I chopped it.

Deleting the resonator increased the interior noise a fair bit at light/medium throttle at low/mid rpm (1000-1800 rpm+\-) . No drone under hard acceleration or at cruise speed though.

I need to get out and do some slow crawling to see if the low rpm drone is annoying to the point where I'll want to reinstall the resonator or a smaller low profile resonator.

What year is your 100, trying to find out if this muffler will fit my 98. Amazon ssys no but....need a replacement before towing boat to coast next week!

MF 12286 is a unversal fit- 24" body 30"overall 2.5" in and out centered. Fits great- but OEM pipe diameter is 2.25 and this is 2.5 so you or installer will need to weld the muffler into place and fill the 1/4" gap.

I bought the bosal from Amazon and it was a direct fit only requiring bolt on. For 01 LX. I did get two gaskets to go with it. The rear clamp didn't work as well as with the stock but I did get it to work with the bosal.

I bought the Walker because it was stainless steel but it was a major pain to install. I would highly recommend AGAINST anyone thinking about getting that one. Get the Bosal. The Walker required MAJOR bending of the front and rear mounts on the muffler to get it to line up anywhere close with the rear pipe. Plus I had to cut the rear outlet off the OEM muffler and weld it on the Walker to allow fitting it up to the OEM exhaust pipe. I was just about to throw it in the trash can but finally got it on.
Repeat......get the Bosal.
