Good setup: 35s, 4" lift, 4.88?

Unorthodox

Unfortunate that’s the result of driving far more on the road then off-road. If ever I’m lucky enough to drive my LC mostly off-road then it will for sure have 5.29 AND crawler gear. I tried it and it’s cats meow and bee’s knees!!!

Locker and crawler gear are one of those you don’t need them till you tried it.

I only have rear and wow what a difference it made on harder stuff with axle dips, difference is night and day. I used it plenty since.

Then once I tried crawler gear I was sold! It is soooo much smoother and need for constant two pedal driving on obstacles are greatly reduced, again night and day difference how easy it can go up stuff.

If you are happy with your setup then it’s great, I was too.....until I tried locker, crawler gear etc etc.....the list just doesn’t seem to get shorter.
Oh I've had crawler gears and lockers and know the benefits. My FJ40 was 82:1 crawl ratio and I had a minitruck with 223:1 Marlin dual case. So at least for me, my feeling of "needing" them isn't based on ignorance. However, I won't argue one bit the effectiveness of either mod, gears or lockers. All I'm saying is that I think there is benefit to learning to drive without them so for a new rig for someone, I don't think they are must have items at the onset.

Totally agree, new folks should use their stock form LC and learn to drive on that first. However I can argue even that is a bit cheating because I personally witnessed how good the LC is in stock form, quite shocking actually. However since we are purely talking about effectiveness of each mods then I still stand by my list in terms of how effective these mods are for offloading independent of driver experience in the order I listed.

I do realize all that those mods do make the LC going off road feel down right cheating. I felt perfectly comfortable letting my buddy's 13 year old son drive my LX up and over obstacles that give plenty troubles to modified 4runners and FJ cruisers. In fact most didn't even attempt some of the obstacles. With only rear locker my LX walked up steep side trails with 3-4ft axle drop/holes like a drive way, didn't even spin a tire, this is before crawler gear too.

Lockers are what you install when you are tired of spending all day to travel a distance you know could be done in 1/4 or less of the time.

Before I had lockers i said that getting stuck, stacking rocks and hilifting meant you were wheeling.

My opinion has changed. Not only do I struggle less and travel much faster/farther, I enjoy much greater control and experience less body damage. I draw on many years of wheeling prior owning an 80.

It’s not about need, it’s about what you expect out of your day on the trail.

@Box Rocket I'll take you up on that at CM, if you don't mind! OMEs right now.

Hey! I asked first! (on the Cruise Moab thread););) I think Adam is going to end up having to give a lot of demo rides to people like us drooling over that suspension setup. I'm on OME and Icons as well and it's OK, but the grass is always greener...

I'm on the stage ones...

@icorradoi dibs is always honored. I'll patiently wait for my turn.:D

I'm trying to come up with some pics of a 2.5" Slee lift on 315s, but hard to come by. Got any handy? Danke.

For that u
Given my use case meaning very light load and 90% LA daily duty driving, will I be just fine with Slee's 2.5" lift kit running the 315s, 4.88s, etc?

Slee - Toyota 80 Series Land Cruiser - OME Lift Kit details

For your use that you listed two choices IMHO.

1. Get an ARB 2.5, 315 KO2, and a Part Time kit. This all we cost you around 4k if someone else puts it in and 3k if you do it. You will have your land Tank that still get crappy gas mileage. With the part time kit you will get back 1.5 MPG and not wear out your front end while commuting.

2. Listen to Adam. Start with a Slinky level one, Castors, Adjustable Pans, Adjustable rear UCA, CV rear shaft, 315 KO2 and part time kit. 7.5k+ installed 6K if you do it. Two day job max with three bananas. Now you have a great DD that drives like a caddy on and off road. The key is you have a great start and if you get the off road bug you wont have to upgrade these parts.

Later you can get gears but at the least do a rear locker. You will use a rear 75% more than a front and it wont kill your steering. It will also get you out of 75% of the trouble you can get in. With this option you will probably need a bumper w/winch to level it out. 4k+ installed.

I will say top three upgrades I did in order are 4.6l HC motor, Slinky's, part time kit.

Here's my build list and you can see there are a mix of Slee & Slinky

OK. This truck (thx @Jvoight) lifted 2.5" on 35s with no steel bumpers + everyone's collective input made me come to a semi-final decision:

-Slee OME 2.5 medium lift kit
-4.88 gears
-315/75/16 BFG TA KO2s
-16x8 Pro Comp 51-6883s
-ARB front and rear lockers
-ARB twin air compressor in the 2nd battery tray

I'd like to eventually add a rear ARB bumper with wheel carrier. At that time, I'll switch to a heavier spring.

Here you go. Well, close, that’s a 2” ome lift and 315 nittos.

extend the rear bump stops or trim a little bit on the rear corners. otherwise in my opinion they are the perfect size for this lift.

there are tons of pics of 2.5'' and 315's, heck there is even a picture thread about it ...... and slee does not make a 2.5'' kit. They sell one, but on that front they sell several combos of OME springs so make sure you compare apples to apples as there are a few diff springs int he 2.5'' height.

you should be fine with the new plan of actions .... if you were to hold off and wait on on anything it would be gears and lockers to see how you liked it first. But if you go into the axles then they both should be considered at same time for $ sake.

OME Heavy front 2.5 spring and medium 2.5 spring in back, 315's and no armor.......

Do yourself a favor one and install dual rate coils. You have choices: Dobinson, slinky, Tour Flex ........

Do yourself favor two and spend more time researching. I can appreciate your desire to get it done and with a degree of accuracy but going solely off what you have learned in this thread alone wouldn’t be in your best interest.

From what I have seen on this forum, guys that have the stage 1 slinky/icon kit love it and if you just wanted to get it done then to me that looks like the safest bet. But I do not have it so i'm not speaking from experience, just what I have read here. thats the plan for mine anyway.

the only thing I will add is that for me I think 4 inches is a bit too tall for 35's, I have a 3 inch and it is perfect but I want to make sure my truck stays comfortable on long on highway road trips......

@CYKBC this. you'll read things like driveline vibration problems in threads about 4" lifts. Bigger is obviously better, but it gets more complicated.
