well you know our boxer has been great but I'd prolly vote lab or a variation. jack's great but he's not real focused on protecting anything, he's too much of a social butterfly....

It's smiling at you!

Any dog balsy enough to be an even half threat to a cougar is probably not the kind of animal that a little kid s/b wandering around with unsupervised.

I vote that you make sure his best buddy is the neighborhood fat kid.

I gotta agree with Legion. Realistically, a cougar would just view your kid as dessert after he killed your dog. We adopted an Aust Shepherd/Red heeler mix mutt thingy that is awesome with the kids. Sheds a little, only barks at UPS trucks, and is not hyper active inside the house. Couldn't be happier with her. She's my first dog. Whatever you get, training is important. My kids want to treat the dog like a member of the familiy, instead of a member of the pack, so to speak.

pit bull mix or ?

Sorry if I do not have a pic of these two dogs near my moms place. The dogs in question would always come racing up to the fence barking when I walk past this neighbors house. What I find a little phyco about it, is the dogs would go crazy barking at me, then start attacking each other...every... single..time! Very weird behavior. Any idea what is going on in the head of these dogs when they do this?

I have to film this some time and put it on you tube.

Anyone have a opinion on Chesapeake Bay retrievers or Coonhounds?

Chesapeakes are great dogs. Kind of like a tougher, more protective lab. Boundless energy-will retrieve sticks out of cold water 12 hours a day. Probably my next dog when I'm working a bit less.

Not on the list, but our last two dogs have been Springer Spaniels. Pretty great all around dogs. Super kid friendly, super smart, happy to do what ever you do, all day long. Not mean, not prone to barking. Bonds closely to immediate family and frequent guests. Great camp dogs too-not huge, but not small dogs either-about 45 pounds.

Chesapeakes can be very territorial mean dogs. The 4 I've known have been a big pain in the ass.

Don't get a mix unless your willing to gamble with getting something your going to hate.

Stay with a pure bread. You chances of getting something you want is a lot better. Especially if kids are involved.

I'd say get a yellow lab or a golden retreiver. Maybe a goldendoodle. Bet of both worlds.

I'm partial to Goldens because that is all I've ever had since I left home. Awesome dogs. Great with kids.

Eventually, I would like to get a pooch to hang with the boy.

Not to sound paranoid, but there are quite a few cougars around my house, prowling the trails. I would like him to have an edge when he is eventually out there exploring...

These breeds keep popping up, but none really tickle my fancy...

  • Australian Shepherd
  • Beagle
  • Boxer Dogs
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  • Cocker Spaniel
  • English Bulldog
  • Golden Retriever
  • Labrador
  • Norfolk Terrier (AKC link)
  • Poodle
I would love to get a hound of sorts, black and tan coon, or something, but they are just not family dogs, from what I understand...

Any ideas out there?

FYI, there will be no Pits or Canary Fighters considered, so leave it alone.

I have an Australian Shepherd and he is very protective of my 2 kids and has no issues with other dogs. They are very smart but may try and herd your son while the dog is still young. Great family dogs and are super disciplined.

Edit: They don't stink either.

I have a GR, Im done with the damn hair, thats why the shorthair breeds.........

All three GSDs that my family has had while I was growing up have lived past 12 years old. Maybe if you don't buy from a puppy mill you won't run into those problems as much.

"And it would make it smarter too."

After ignoring your grammatical error here, I have to say not so fast, my friend. What type of collie are you talking about, and where's the proof?
Go read. Border Collies are nearly universally regarded as #1 (though NUTS if not given an environment to properly channel their energy and herding tendencies), but smooth and rough and bearded collies are brilliant as well.
Tofu, Chows have a really high ratio of bites, one of the highest. Many homeowners policies now base some of your premium on your dog type. Pits, Rotts and Chows are high risk dogs according to my agent, I had a German Rott and way the most loyal lovable dog but was still agressive.
Gee...I never heard this before. They are naturally dog-aggressive and their body language can be more subtle than other dogs, so idjits may get bitten due to being obtuse or oblivious. But they fit the bill. I am on my fourth chow mix (note, I said MIX), and they're nothing short of fabulous dogs.
burmese are nice too, but I am looking for low maintenance.

no shedding, no barking, no smelling...

am I asking too much?

That would be Bernese (no M) Mountain Dogs, Not from Burma. Mixed bag. some great, some nasty, like St. Bernards and many of the breeds that come from a cross of mollosoids (mastiffs) and herders.

if a pit got anywhere near my son, I would kill it, I don't give a fxxx how nice it appeared to be. stupid fxxxing dogs.

Jeb, we've been getting along just fine for a long while now, but that's bull**** internet tough guy talk right there.

Looks like Vizulia or Weimeriner...........

OK, seems too many people don't know how to spell or say this Hungarian breed. It is Vizsla, and pronounced Veesh-la. And they can be great.

Most kids could stand a good herding. I'm betting little Jeb Jr. might enjoy a dog like that.

Here's a grand idea: Go to a local animal rescue and see what dogs are in their foster program. The foster folks will have sized up the dog and will know if it has any issues.

Some of the healers I've met have been awsome with kids (but won't listen to them), more geared toward the alpha male in the family. Boxers are great family dogs, loyal, love to please, and have fun with the family, all around an excellent choice..
Labs, on the other hand, as with any good buddy, will hurt like hell when they pass, and they love to make friends.
