Good dog for young kids...

Thought about a Labradoodle? Friend has one, best of both breeds, ugly but good with their kids.

I have actually considered a full size poodle.

they don't shed, have hair instead of fur, don't smell, have webbed feet and swim well...also, despite the common perception, they are quite ferocious and protective.

they look pretty good when not all poofed out by some old lady...

You may want to look into Goldendoodles and Labradoodles, I know, their names are rediculous, but they have a bit of of the best from both breeds and they do not shed quite as much as a lab would. My in-laws have a Goldendoodle named Harry and he is one of the coolest dogs I have ever met. Just my 2cents.

Pitbull. I hate kids.

Just kidding, of course. I think an aussie shepherd is not a great idea for young kids. Then again, I don't think many shepherd dogs make good dogs for kids. To go over your list:

* Australian Shepherd--crazy
* Beagle--loud, loud, loud
* Boxer Dogs--dumb, dumb, dumb
* Cavalier King Charles Spaniel--don't know too much
* Cocker Spaniel--really? this fru fru dog? against cougars?
* English Bulldog--yeah, if you like waiting on the trail for it to catch up
* Golden Retriever--decent choice
* Labrador--decent choice
* Norfolk Terrier (AKC link)--terriers are, well, terriers
* Poodle--decent choice

My own leanings would be to get a retriever, a lab, a standard poodle, an Irish setter, or a mutt.

Lab mix all the way.

Both my dogs when puppies saved the wife from a sociopath at the Ft. Ross campground.

My chocolate lab sleeps with my boy every night and I feel safer for it.

Airedale or standard poodle would rock. I'm not sure what would slow down a cougar, but any dog would tend to make a cougar think twice.

How about something your kid can outrun in a cougar attack? And hang hot dogs on the collar while you're at it, forget the e-collar.

The most protective badass dog I owned was a dalmation/chocolate lab mix.

He was fast as the wind, fearless, could clear 6' in one jump and would have died protecting me. He was a great dog.

My step dad is a vetrinarian and I grew up with chesapeakes, we had two, my brother had one. Some are a little off?and displayed separation anxiety, may have been just the 3 I've known, but overall great dogs.

Im kind of leaning to that, Chocolate lab, Vizula/Weimie or some form of hunting dog. Have the room for one and like em, new neighbor has a amazing Lab, he points to a spot and the dog stands there, palm down the dog sits.

This is obviously the answer that he should listen to.

Hmm, ever consider adopting a fat kid?

I grew up around pittys and they love all people and kids NATURALLY. Don't slam the breed because of some idiot kids. They are very loyal and I would think a no brainer for protection from errant wildlife. Now I am sure you have your reasons and I respect that, just please don't blame the breed. We could go on for hours on that one.

That being said, I would recommend a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I had a Boxer-Rhodesian mix and she loved everyone, very tolerant of my little ones, easy to train and protected us walking the back trails by my parents house. That breed was created to help hunt lions in Africa and were fearless doing it. Got me sold!

The boxer part I agree on because they are very loyal, protective but can be a bit DUH and they fart, ALOT. Enough to make the paint drip off the walls. :)

The pound always has a three-legged dog nobody wants, total cougar bait. Neighbors would think you're a compassionate man, kids would learn about helping the less fortunate, dog would be easy to handle and probably grateful.

Currently we have three rescues, a Pit-Border Collie, Rott-Husky and Boxer-Lab. They each have their own great loving and protective qualities so I guess it just depends on the luck of the draw and your leadership skills.

Good luck with your search!
