Woah woah woah. What’s all this about a cab swap?

Well every time I drive Iota specifically I think about the extra 10 cm in the 79 because I had to use 79 series seats which are more comfortable but take up more room and are taller. So the wheel is in my lap. I've gotten used to it. But when I see yards full of new cabs...the mind wanders.

Isn't this beautiful!?

If you managed to find a 2000-2007 79 cab it would fit relatively easily.
No, all of the cabs for sale here are from companies that are converting to light armoured vehicles, so they all are very recent build dates. Anything from the 2000 period is thrashed. Or RHD and thrashed. I do see AUS trucks coming here and getting converted over to LHD using new cabs. Not sure how it looks underneath. Here is a particularly nice example I saw recently.

Note lack of VIN plate.

This last photo reveals this is actually an old truck. Not sure of the date but it won't be importable to the US--it is not that old. I believe they used a new pull cab on this.

A pig with lipstick perhaps? Reminds me when you first got the 75 haha!

A little hiccup. There is a small amount of interference to the PTO winch driveshaft, which also happens to have all its joints frozen. For example, the clutch hose is just a little too close

And the shaft also was rubbing slightly on the radiator. Not good long term for either.

Matt's solution is to lower the shaft a bit

Transfer case rebuilt with 10% Sumo Overdrive Highrange gears (I am a HUGE fan of these), installed back in the truck with new driveshaft from Tom Woods.

This morning we got the rear window swapped out with a new one John sourced.

New shifter boots were a no brainer since they are available. The ones in here were destroyed.
I wish these were available for 60 series still.

This is going to be a completely different truck once we are done, with all the drivetrain repaired, cab sealed, brakes actually working

We also got the 80 brake booster put in, and new master cylinders. You can also see the clevis I sell to install the 80 booster which has a shorter pushrod*

We also got all the vacuum hoses replaced with new OEM. Several were broken or just completely missing so this truck had no vacuum assist working for the brakes or clutch.

The whole attachment between clutch pedal and master cylinder was completely blown out. Pedal egged out, clevis egged out, pin worn, normally I would just replace all this with new but we are running short on time here so I made a quick sleeve that I tacked welded in, and replaced the clevis and pin from one I had from a 4runner I think. Then blasted and painted both pedals and replaced all bushings and stop cushions with new OEM we keep in stock.
Will be replacing all pedal pads with new as well.
Everything is much better now.

If you are using a standard PTO drive shaft , it should not interfere with nothing !
The OEM shaft si maybe 20-25 mm in diameter .
And the radiator has a notch in that position to make the pass more easy

New Clutch tube made since we moved the hose mounting tab to clear the PTO shaft. I switched to stainless tubing and fittings exclusively for the custom lines about two years ago.
Also replaced the missing brake level switch connector.

Got interior back in, brakes and clutch bled, alignment done, tires on and got it on the ground. Looks like we only lost a little bit of height in the rear, maybe 1/2" at the most, but jumping up and down on the rear bumper the truck feels way softer. Can't wait to drive it and see how it feels tomorrow.

Got the PTO torn down for a refresh and once that's back in it's time to test.

John can do this later but all of those black dash faceplates are still available and cheap (or at least they were a couple of years ago).

The objective here was mechanicals... John will probably gut this whole cab and dash and go through everything on his own.. I have no interest in that sort of work (other then supplying the parts :) ) and he does

Ok, well, it did, and now it doesn't :meh:
33 year old work truck with 500k KM on it. Sometimes stuff doesn't line up.

Re the radiator notch, this may have been one that was fabbed in Dubai without the notch. I added the PTO winch when I happened to spot one at the salvage yard. I'd always been interested in trying out a PTO winch even though I really like the Aisin OEM electric winches.
