Posting to the converted here, but it might be useful as a reference for newbies wondering about us raving over quick boost.

It's a short video (7 seconds) showing my boost gauge at about 90kmh in 5th gear, 12HT with 3" exhaust and 600mm front mount intercooler. Boost max's at 19psi or about 1.4bar.

I was travelling at the road speed limit, so didn't hold the high boost too long, just long enough for the video - acceleration is pretty sprightly at this speed.

Wow, that would be amazing! There is no way I would have understood what you mean by "quick boost" without seeing that! Unreal.

I didn't see anything from my desktop either, but then viewed the thread through my smartphone and could see a link.
 
I clicked on the red X in the white box and it loaded up the video for me, never had that work before, but it did just like the poster described. Weird.

That was nuts! The turbo kicked in like it was tied to the gas pedal!

Thanks for fixing that up. I think I used a 'small' URL which may have been the problem. I've changed it to a Link instead of an Image now and it seems to be more reliable as a link.

If I get a different gauge Dougal, i'll just be tempted to go higher. :-)

Like many gauges, I don't refer to it much. I know my EGT's will stay low in normal driving, and only need to pay attention to them on long climbs under high load. Boost looks after itself really, once set up. The orange overboost light comes on at one bar, and that is a more obvious marker point than the gauge if I want to worry about something. The boost gauges are out of my normal line of sight and up on the roof along with the controls for the sunroof.

Re the turbo, this was Graeme's first unit installed on a 12H-T. He's moved the design on many stages since then, and I'm pretty sure boost response won't have got any worse!

I gotta say, good on you guys for putting up a little tech....but holy power junkies!;) I'd like to go for a ride in one of your trucks, they must haul ass!:cool: I'm happy to be towing my trailer, canoe, family and camping gear without hitting 1200 degrees in a head wind on the freeway.:crybaby: Anyway..thanks to all your ramblings I understand how the boost compensator diaphram/rod works (even though I haven't touched it yet) and have turned up my boost progressively to 15.75 with awesome egt lowering results, even spun an inside tire around a corner making a left into traffic:eek:...so keep up the good work! Go team!:beer:
 
I've been running mine for a week now. Air to air front mount intercooler, otherwise stock. After some crude IP adjustments, boost starts at 1,000rpm, you can't ask more than that. I've got max boost as 22psi and the very max egt I have seen is 1,100F. I haven't been able to do enough highway driving to analyse further but it is certainly a huge improvement. A simple comparison would be that I get the same acceleration in 5th gear, that I used to get in 3rd. The turbo is quieter than OEM if anything and the biggest noise I have is coming from the snorkel at high boost.

The turbo is a G2, made last month.

What boost and max egt are you running?
 
My experience after having it installed for about 3 months is as follows. I've got a 1993 HDJ81 with the fully electronic A442. Here in Calgary there is a long highway stretch (Stoney Trail for those who know it) where it is inclined about 5%. It runs for about 4-5 kms and the speed limit is 110 kph.

I used to run this hill and the truck would gear down to 3rd, out of OD, struggling to keep 90 kph. I could get the speed if I put my foot into it but my EGT's would climb to 1200-1300+ degrees F. I was at the factory 12 lbs of boost. The transmission temp would also climb as my TC was not locked up.

Now I hit it in 4th, and stay in 4th. I hold 120 kph and my EGT's never climb above 850 degrees F. MY boost is dialed in to ~20-22 lbs.

I've played with the fuel until I started getting diminishing returns, it was about 2 full turns to hit this point. Small black puff on acceleration.

It's not a rocket, it never will be. I don't lay rubber or chirp the tires. My acceleration is maybe marginally better, but I really don't think so. Where it really performs is the highway and my EGT's which is exactly where I wanted it. I do get more boost at lower RPMs, but I can't document if or how that is better performance-wise.

I'm happy.

No doubt I am a very happy customer too, I don't have the knowledge nor kit to get the max out of my IP but will prob make some more crude adjustments as I get to know my new setup better. What I'm now interested in is the relationship between boost, EGT and efficiency, assuming I get over the pure pleasure of the car's response to my right foot!

Your engine is most efficient at the point where it's burning all of the fuel but not pumping excess boost. Graeme has nailed this down with his dyno testing to an A/F ratio of about 18:1, EGT's will depend on the setup, but I think 650-700C.

Your turbocharger feeds off exhaust heat and pressure, the hotter it runs, the less exhuast drive pressure it needs to make the same boost. Above 600C is where you turbo really starts to pay for itself.

To run cooler than that you are pumping too much air which takes a lot of power. To run hotter than that you'll be smoking and blowing unburnt fuel out the exhaust.
 
I fitted up my Gturbo to my 61 Sahara today. First impressions are were it's very quick to spool and hit max set boost and it eliminated nearly all black smoke from a standing start (auto box). I will do some tweaking yet to maximise these new traits.
 
1HDT 1993 80 MANUAL - Grunter 2 with 192hp at wheels

Fellow on another forum in Australia just had his professionally tuned by Diesel Central. Perfect EGT's, full boost of 22-23psi at 1600rpm, holds boost throughout rev range flat as a tack.

Dynoed in 4th. It has 127hp at wheels at 1700rpm!!! Problem is clutch slippage which is why the graph is all wobbly. A new clutch is being fitted. It will be dynoed again afterwards. It has more power at 1500rpm at the wheels than a stock 1HDT puts out at ita maximum!

It also has really chunky tyres which always lowers the at wheels power figure. But, even so, its putting down the same power at wheels as a stock new VDJ200 on smooth tyres (thats the twin turbo common rail 4.5L Toyota Diesel) without computers in a lighter truck!

Back calculating torque from the power at wheels puts it around the 600nm mark (including a small amount of drivetratin loss - its around 400ftlbs without factoring any losses at all) from 1700 and up (at 1600 its almost there too.... in fact at 1500 its not far off). The torque curve shown is in ftlbs for torque at engine excluding drivetratin losses.

I should note that I've not even seen this truck - its some 4000km from where I am in Perth! The only bummer about doing these turbos is I do it because I love it - and I dont get to see too many of the trucks with them on.

Bad Boy at 30psi on 1HD-FT

Power is at wheels. This dyno is intertia type, so reading is not good in low rpms - plus its auto. Peak power is ok though.

Dyno performed in 4wd.

Automatic (extreme from Wholesale Automatiics). Std airbox (80 series = restrictive), 3" exhaust, eBay front mount intercooler, Holley "red" lift pump. 35" Tyres.

Vehicle spins front and rear tyres off mark on dry bitumen.

Power at crank is near 300hp. Torque at ~ 2700 is 700nm (Feedback is peak is around 1800-2000rpm, 770nm)

Tuning Done at United Fuel Injection, Perth.
