Don't worry OPEC will put a stop to this soon and we will be back up to $3+ per gallon soon enough. This fuel price game really sucks....!

True, this just proves that the price hike was completely fabricated. I will however enjoy it while I can. Wish you could stockpile gas like you can with diesel. For that matter wish my 80 was a diesel. If I only had the money. :hhmm:

Totally disagree. OPEC already threatened to cut supplies months ago. It's perceived effect has already hit the pumps, did you feel it? It's a world market. Canada, Mexico, Venezuela they are all players and we buy more oil from Canada than from OPEC. Price is about supply, demand and speculation in oil futures. We are the largest consumer of oil in the world and our economy is tanking. Oil futures are traded in dollars and the price has a direct correlation to speculator confidence in the dollar and future oil consumption nationally and internationally. The whole world is feeling this credit crunch and a lot of the leveraged speculation money has dried up and blown away right along with our home equity. By the way we Americans created trading in oil futures back in the 80's. So is this market manipulation or normal market forces at work? I have my opinion, what say you? ;)

Scott,

Couldn't agree more. Buddy I play golf with is a retired exec from Fleur Corp and has run multi billion $$ projects all over the world in the oil industry. He's said that oil hit's the high seas and the worldwide speculators begin the bidding...as you said all in $USD$. I'm thinking gas prices are going to stay fairly low until we start to come out of this depression.

I agree with both of you as I follow this pretty much daily. This is a global economy. By the way, we created this global economy. We were isolationist prior to WWI and once we became the super power (which might I add we are a very young and inexperienced super power relative to past powers), we figured out ways to make money out of money. Much of this included growing profits through the use of other countries and much leverage (i.e. manufacturing/production and service outside these borders to the lowest bidder). Our governement has also brought in other governements to finance much of our country. Thus a nice big global economy that heavily relies on us probably just as much as we rely on them. As far as the oil situation, I have always thought it interesting that main stream media never really mentions that Canada is our primary supplier (greater than 50% of our oil comes from them). I do not personally believe that gas prices will rise until the economy does. Just don't get upset when your 401(k) starts to rise again and you cruiser becomes more expensive to drive again. As far as deflation, I am not worried about it near as much as inflation in the future. It seems that Bernanke and others have pretty much decided to throw money at this economy without regard to inflationary results down the road as an attempt to curb deflation. The reason being, right or wrong, is that they feel more comfortable fighting inflation than fighting deflation. Economic stimulas here we come!

Yep - driving the daughter's Scion xA these days as a commuter car since she isn't driving. Even with the beast in tip top shape, engine, new leather, etc. Scion get's 30 mpg and doesn't hurt my back like the Miata did.

My fiance drives the 80 leaving me stuck with the 60 which is getting about 11mpg (needs a carb rebuild).

I think I'm going to buy a cheap commuter car for now. This sucks.

Thank goodness for the 4cyl Honda Accord, only problem i need a new timing belt. Oh well got to make it last as long a I can...

$4.05 for premium at my local Von's which our cheap spot besides Arco (Am/Pm)...these fuel prices suck some Shweaty Balls!!

I swear its the oil companies just price gouging the CRAP out of us... (I know there is more to it than that... but come on!!)

As a commuter car I highly recommend a prius. I traded the sti in after the home purchase and it has been a very sound decision. Just wish I would have look for a used one first. There are some good deals out there.

That pretty much sums it up. The other word I would use is greed. Don't think for a minute that there aren't plenty of US citizens and political alliances that are tremendously benefitting from this mess. Simply blaming the middle east or other foreign nations would be naive. Think about the rolling blackouts in CA a decade ago. They were all triggered by greedy US companies (i.e. Enron) and the government turned a blind eye. I hate to be so cynical but I guess I deal with this greed every day. I do enjoy trying to help people understand a clearer picture. I sure don't know near everything, but I do know that greed fuels capitalism and politics...two things that this country has plenty of!

I am thinking of picking up a commuter too. 2001 Honda Civic GX. It's NGV and there is a fill up near LAX and in Santa Fe Springs. Both near work and home. NG prices range from 2.10 - 2.59. The NGV Civic still gets 30-35 MPG and is carpool white sticker which expire in 2015!

My bro offered up his 04 Mazda3. Won't start and garaged for 1.5 years now. Looking at it next weekend.
