Front recovery points on GX460 (2010-2013)

At $300, I stopped looking and didn't realize that was just for one. I'd rather put that toward a bumper. That was the only listing I came across searching for the ARB points. There have been some changes in availability from Guide to GX 460 Builds and Aftermarket Products - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/guide-to-gx-460-builds-and-aftermarket-products.1168653/.

I couldn't find those overpriced points sold by ARB or Ironman, just Metal Tech. It didn't look like Trail Tailor has any available (or ever did?).

The only other options I came across were:

With those flat plate recovery points insure you rig a bridle and mitigate side loading.

The ones that use to be available from Ironman were low quality. I actually cracked a weld on one installing then when I first bought my GX. I had so many problems with Ironman parts that I wouldn't consider them direct bolt parts and have since replaced all my Ironman parts.

Proper recovery training is warranted as well. Good to know about the Ironman gear. And, certainly don't take any of my information as a recommendation. I don't know anything - I've just been spending every waking hour since I got my GX researching available options and that's what I've found for front recovery points. Figured someone may find it useful.

I have these on my 470. They also work on a 460. They are super-beefy and can accommodate side loading, but are not KDSS compatible. I think they are beefier than the Bison points as they really surround the framerail on all sides and have like 6-7 bolts that hold them on (the Bison points only have 3). The steel is 1/4" thick but it's two layers in some areas so you get a 1/2" thick section. They are raw steel but I painted mine in Farmall Red. The best thing as they are only $125!

My bad, I thought that some of the base models perhaps did not have KDSS. Either way, they are a good option for 470 folks and I have been pleased with mine.

APEX Overland people are incredibly nice and extremely helpful! I went to their shop in NC to have BMC and KDSS spacers installed since I didn't want to risk braking the bolts. I held these in hand and man, they are extremely stout and well made.

with 3 frame and 1 radiator support they can handle side load just fine.

Only reason I don't have them on is because I am too lazy to take my bumper and winch mount off since you have to insert a dual welded nut plate through the front of the frame for the 2 bolts above the KDSS bar.

Those do look good. I think I missed the link for the "5th gen 4Runner KDSS Recovery points" under "Does NOT work with KDSS equipped vehicles". I had looked at Apex a while ago, but didn't realize they had a set that would work on the 460.

Has anyone used these in an actual recovery without mangling the s#!t out of your plastic bumper cover? The 460 bumper cover hangs down much lower than the 4Runner one.

The folks that don't have any interest in getting steel bumpers usually trim both the front and rear bumpers up several inches for ground clearance.
If trimmed, it may not be an issue. But that all depends upon what angles one is pulling at too!
I could easily see an instance where the nose (or rear) is dropped in a hole or gully enough that regardless the bumper, that recovery line will be pulling upward into the bumper.

Have you used yours to be pulled out of a real stuck situation? I can’t imagine those things taking the weight of the vehicle and then some.

Why not? They are sturdily built and bolted directly to the frame. I've been wheeling for 20+ years and they look fine to me.

My previous FJ Cruiser had the same points, and there were a few failures reported but were attributed to rusted welds, but they served me well in the 7 years I had the FJ.

Because they are only listed as tie down points for transport. They just don’t look beefy enough to me to pull my truck out of a really stuck spot.

Been sitting on them for a year…my bad. Never did install them when I replaced my LCAs as my welder ran out of gas on a Sunday, ended up going to a guy that was gonna copy the design and reproduce them I guess.

Do I miss the GX? Nah, bought it in January 2020 and just sold it last month for $7k more than I paid for it and got into a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR DCLB…needed a truck again and while the GX was nice, I had a bit of a jaded ownership with the coolant valley leak and ~$5k of parts for other repairs. With a newborn at home, I’m happy to be in a rig with a factory warranty so I have my weekends back to be a dad and not a DIY mechanic.

The Taco is clearly not as refined, but gets 3 times the gas mileage, rides better than my lifted GX did, fits our family of 3 just the same and has the great utility of a bed.
