Fort Knox Console Mod

Update - The buttons on the simplex lock tend to jiggle and rattle over bumps, so I took the face plate off and put a thin piece of low density foam around the buttons. I also added a thin piece of foam tape where the lock bolt touches the door frame. All quiet now.

I have a rookie question. How do hold the bolts in box while I'm under the truck tightening the locking nuts? Is this where I ask my wife to hold the wrench?

The first two bolts go into the regular mounting bracket, which just has threaded holes.

For the "extra" two bolts I put through the floor pan, I just put a socket wrench on the bolt head from above. When I turned the nuts below the truck, the socket wrench on top would hit the side of the safe and would not turn. As long as you can put a wrench on the bolt head inside the safe, your wife won't need to help.

Tagged, I want this. Thanks for the info.

Nice addition to the rig! Although I'd rather have a cw on my waist that is a good storage spot for when you have to leave it in the truck.

Very nice!

I am surprised that one of the overland 80's that have traveled the world hasn't shared this, almost all have "safes" to secure valuables and credentials needed for travel.

I like this mod and it seems to be a good fit, just curious why people haven't checked out tuffy consoles? They are fairly tough and give you a lot more useable space inside.

There is a thread on the Tuffy console install - unless you know of a new model, the one that was discussed required pulling the factory unit (negating the "nothing special here people" look) - and it was so big I think the OP of that that thread said it was a bit obtrusive in reality, esp if you haul kiddos 3 across in the back seat.

This seems like the slick cure unless you know a new Tuffy that wasn't discussed yet.

^^^agree, too big and want to keep the stock look.....

I have it installed in my truck and it doesn't intrude on the back seat at all. I would hazard to guess unless someone really knew what they were looking at the wouldn't notice it.

Just installed one of these in my '96. Exactly what I wanted - so glad I found this thread. The safe isn't cheap but it's a safe...shouldn't be cheap.

FYI this safe does fit a Kimber Pro Carry II with an extended 8-round mag, but just barely and only if the gun is angled. Don't think you could fit anything larger without removing the interior padding.

I will have had my Fort Knox installed 2 years in April. No disappointment. It does the job and is likely the most secure solution available for the 80 series.

Does an XD fit?

Does anyone know whether or not the Springfield XD9 Service fits? Mine has a 4" barrel and the online dimensions say it is 5.5" tall. Im really hoping I wont have to store it with the mag out.

My M&P 9mm Pro is 5.5 inches tall and would only fit with the mag removed or carpet removed. It has a longer barrel than your XD but I doubt it would make much difference.

DAMN! How close is it to closing with the stock carpet? if I swapped in 1/4" thick carpet do you thing it would close, or would I need to run "no carpet" in order to make it close?

Haha and I diddnt know that Dam was a bad word on the forums. It looks like im dropping F bombs lol

For reference:

Full size 70 Series Colt 1911 is just a hair too long to fit straight, and must be angled. This means it cannot lie on its side. The grip sticks too far up, and even removing the carpet and mag does not help enough. No go.

My M&P9 Pro is about an eighth of an inch shorter than the 1911, but can fit straight. If the bottom carpet is in, it still sticks up too much.

With the bottom carpet removed, it just fits with no room to spare. You could not add a thinner carpet and make this gun work with the mag inserted, and I would not want to carry a nice gun without the carpet. Removing the mag would probably work with a thinner carpet. I suppose you could make things fit even better by removing the side carpets, but I have no interest in trying that. Stock carpet is about i/4 inch thick, maybe a bit more.

You could fit about five Ruger LCR's in the safe. :p
